  1. Here's a screen shot of the one I am sending back to Lenovo. This is with an undervolt only 30 seconds into Cinebench. Mind you, simply opening Cinebench caused thermal throttle on the CPU. The fans would max when setting up or updating Windows so I knew something was very off from the beginning. I decided to buy another one at Microcenter since it's down to $2799 now and I kind of need a functioning laptop. Thankfully it's perfect re: screen, fans, build. Thermals are amazing as they were in my original system that I posted about here awhile back. So much variance in heatsink / LM application, it's ridiculous. I'm scoring 19,500 for CPU score in TimeSpy because I am able to increase ICC max with my undervolt to get more CPU performance. With a -125mv UV on the core and -100 UV on cache and e-cores, I got 33,360 on Cinebench 10 minute run and no throttle. This is what the laptop should perform like and what I expect. Anyone reading this who gets results like the POS in my screenshot, return it and demand better.
  2. It is strange. I'd been messaging privately with this person running various tests. I also get frametime spikes in Doom that didn't happen before and don't happen on the 4080 model. It is related to Advanced Optimus just like the screen flicker likely is. In Hybrid mode there are no frametime spikes nor is it as bad when using discrete GPU mode in BIOS. I'm curious whether the spikes are due to the Killer wireless card vs. Intel AX211, that's the only thing I haven't been able to test yet and will get to that later today finally. Unlikely, but never know. Years ago the Killer software suite caused terrible stuttering which was eliminated by switching to Intel. The fan noise is not common, the heatsinks are the same on 4080 and it's just the usual parts lottery from Lenovo. The WiFi card isn't a big deal to me, it's a $15 purchase on eBay for the Intel card. There is wild variance with paste job / CPU temps. My original model sustained 4.5ghz on the CPU during a 10 min CB run and didn't exceed 90 degrees. I should've just kept it. The last one I had thermal throttling even with undervolt and couldn't break 30,000. There was a 13 degree temp difference between cores. My new one from Lenovo direct arrives today. Based on the parts list for my serial it shipped with the Intel AX211 card. Assuming everything else checks out aside from poor CPU, I'll likely keep it and repaste myself rather than return it again.
  3. Yes, got it to work finally. I can see all of the advanced options but don't want to brick the laptop, so I am leaving as-is for now.
  4. I found the github page and set up the USB drive (FAT format) and disabled secure boot. I keep getting boot failure errors and can't boot into it. The "instructions" if you can call it that, are extremely unclear in my mind. I created the cfg file as well. There are some really nice prices / discounts now, I think I priced a 4090 config on Lenovo's site for $2750 before tax. I am tempted to go into Microcenter to see if they'll price match, but since coupon codes are added on Lenovo's site I don't think they will match. Oh well, not returning it regardless. Nice score for those who are getting this price.
  5. How are you able to access the hidden bios features? I'd like to see if I can adjust the CPU multiplier and properly OC it, along with adding some new RAM. Your result is very promising.
  6. Picked up another system from Microcenter, this one has the CSO1628 panel. It also exhibits the flicker at the two lowest brightness settings when in Advanced Optimus + dGPU mode. So this may be a 4090 thing, who knows. Really never use the laptop at lowest brightness while gaming, so not sure it'll matter in the long run. Will just keep this one and send back my original to Lenovo, incidentally Rakuten isn't giving me the cash back because I bought it through my organization's link, so Microcenter ends up being slightly cheaper.
  7. I posted on Lenovo's support forum, hopefully someone who can do something about it will get word of it. Tempted to just buy another one at Microcenter now and hope for the other display panel. But I don't want to go down that road / vicious cycle either...
  8. Both machines I've tried have BOE panels.
  9. I'd agree with you on that, thank you for confirming that the flicker doesn't occur on yours, helps narrow it down a bit. Considering all I've gone through with my history of Legions / G-sync issues, etc., if flicker at lowest brightness using AO dGPU mode is my only issue I'll accept that. I'm not ready to flash vbios on this laptop yet and -likely- won't. I've compared a few that are out there to mine using NVflash and they are totally mismatched. I didn't flash the 2nd laptop I ordered to confirm the flicker, just wanted to test it and sent it back. I will look into reaching out to Lenovo about it, wonder if they can update the vbios, if that is the reason.
  10. 4090 version is now $2999 at Microcenter, FYI. Very solid deal, imo. Might be the cheapest 4090 system at the moment? Noticed it as I need to buy a spare AC adapter and my local store actually has the Lenovo slim 300w adapter. The SlimQ 240w and 330w adapters that I have don't work with this laptop, it is limiting me to quiet or balanced mode. SlimQ apparently is aware of it and should send out a replacement Lenovo plug, but not holding my breath.
  11. I just tried another Pro 7i, it has the same issue with display flicker at low brightness when using Advanced Optimus in dGPU mode. Seems to be 100% software / driver / bios related. For a $3000 laptop I had to be sure. What is the best way to send a message to Lenovo engineers etc., so that they can look into a fix?
  12. I think I can safely say this will be a keeper laptop for at least a couple of years. Fingers crossed no G-sync issues like Legions past. I'm not getting any crashes or game stuttering like what's been reported, the bios got auto updated through Windows updates to version 33 for me. The thermals on this laptop are incredible and I didn't expect it to be this good. My paranoia has been triggered by the odd display flicker with Advanced Optimus dGPU mode at the two lowest brightness levels. But it doesn't happen in Hybrid mode (running on iGPU) or iGPU mode, or when running dGPU only mode through bios / Vantage. So I'm trying to convince myself it isn't hardware but rather some bug with Advanced Optimus. My CPU is stable with a -150mv undervolt on the core and -100mv on the p-cores and e-cores. Cinebench R23 10 minute run and TimeSpy test attached. GPU OC is +225 core and +1200 memory. I crash at +230 in games and benchmarks.
  13. FYI, Microcenter now has the 4090 version in stock for $3299. Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 16" Gaming Laptop Computer Platinum Collection - Onyx Grey; Intel Core i9 13th Gen 13900HX 1.6GHz - Micro Center
  14. Will try reaching out to them. Do you experience slight screen flicker at low brightness levels? It happens when I am in dGPU mode, when in Optimus or iGPU mode it is fine. Only at the 2nd lowest brightness level and below. If I turn on HDR and lower the brightness there is no flicker, strange. Hopefully it is an nVidia driver issue and not a bad DisplayPort cable or panel issue. *Edit- the screen flicker doesn't happen when I set the system to discreet mode bypassing Advanced Optimus. Only happens when in dGPU mode via Advanced Optimus at the 2 lowest brightness levels. 100% a software / AO issue and not hardware. Phew.
  15. Seems as if there are many different types of RAM for this machine, the parts list for mine shows 7 substitutes. On another note, I tried using the SlimQ 330w GaN charger doesn't work with my Pro 7! I can't run in any modes except for balanced and quiet, and CPU power is limited to around 50-ish watts. The laptop charges just fine though. I left my official Lenovo charger at my office and planned to use this one at home. So much for doing any gaming or anything else tonight. 🤣
  16. I've read reports that RAM may be running at 4800mhz and that Lenovo may update via BIOS. My RAM is running at the advertised 5600mhz. I updated to the latest BIOS, KWCN32WW. I am not able to undervolt the CPU at all. I've disabled core isolation and virtualization settings in Windows and have disabled undervolt protection in the BIOS. I am able to adjust the voltage offsets in TS and Intel XTU but the settings do not apply / stick. Am I missing any steps here? Thanks in advance.
  17. Thanks for posting that, I didn't realize. I was able to register at the TPU forums and was sent a link for the beta version of TS that supports CPU undervolting, will try it out later, FYI if you haven't tried that yet.
  18. The new Vantage settings and tweaks take a lot of getting used to, I am still tinkering. I disabled undervolt protection in the BIOS but can't run Intel XTU, settings are all grayed out. Thermals are incredible, I've tried F1 2022 and Cyberpunk 2077. The latest Nvidia driver has a bug (at least for me) where it won't draw full GPU power, it could've been something I did, but I'm now using the Lenovo supplied Nvidia driver and pulling proper GPU power. So far no game-breaking G-sync stutter which I was bracing for. I ran a couple TimeSpy tests using a custom thermal profile in Vantage. I set a GPU core OC of +200/+1000. Pretty nice result although I'd like to get more out of the CPU. Still a lot of testing and tweaking to do, but I'm impressed with the laptop so far. It beats my old 3080 Ti desktop handily. http://www.3dmark.com/spy/37142980
  19. The beast arrived, did my usual dead pixel and screen check, no issues. Haven't even installed any apps or games yet, need to update everything and install my 2nd SSD. The only thing I can comment on is build quality. It is by no means bad and still miles better than anything Asus or MSI I've used. My Alienware fans get loud during the first boot up into Windows setup. I haven't heard the fans on this machine yet.
  20. Jarrod's review is pretty informative. Amazing re: sustained max power. I'm not as enthused about them using liquid metal rather than PTM 7950 on the CPU. Wonder what the reason is. If I see an all new "Coldfront 6.0" on the Legion 9 or whatever it'll be called, I'll be quite irritated.
  21. You didn't mention any spec; I was replying to the 2nd part of your comment re: building a desktop / price to performance ratio, perhaps I took it out of context.
  22. The 4090 in this laptop will outperform my ATX size desktop that I sold late last year with 5 fans and Noctua CPU cooler, i9 9900K, 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra. Depending on the game it hangs with the desktop 3090 Ti and 4070 Ti. That's *insane* to me if it actually performs at this level. I'm still skeptical / will believe it when I see it. I have no intention of playing games at 4K, got this GPU because it slays 1440p and I won't need to tweak. It'll meet my needs for many years. I will never build a desktop again, there's just no need.
  23. Well I bit the bullet and ordered the 4090 model. Rakuten has 10% cash back today. Under "item price" in the order details the total is $3050. On the actual order the subtotal prior to coupons is $3523. My actual grand total w/ tax is $3271 using a 6% off coupon in addition to GREETINGS10 for another $100 off. I assume the 10% cash back is based on the "item price" of $3050 but am not sure? That would put the total price at $2971 which is alright by me. Delivers 1st week of April apparently, we'll see.
  24. Priced out the 4090 version on Lenovo's site, with a 6% bar association discount the total is $3378, then the 6% Rakuten cash back of $189 comes to a grand total of $3189. The 4080 version at Microcenter with tax is $2921. Makes the 4090 version a no-brainer if I were to go through with it.
  25. Wow, it is on sale now for $2650. That's a fine price. Interested to hear about your experiences with it as you use it!
