Hello, I’m new to this forum, I recently got a Dell Precision m4600 that I plan to offload NVENC onto. I use Arch Linux, and I’m planning on running a long term experiment of slowly upgrading and testing different mxm 3.0a3.1a GPUs on this laptop. I think it’s an easy way to hopefully prove that old powerhouses here still have a place and you don’t need a more modern laptop.
That being said I’ve used this forum and the other 3 linked as extensive resources into what I plan to do and I plan to log it here. https://www.reddit.com/u/Daviboy_540/s/Moc9tZfwTc
This laptop from what I’ve seen has mostly been used by Windows users, not digging, but with Linux there were some fringe cases in the other forums mentioning how Maxwell GPUs seemed to work with Ubuntu. With how well modern Linux has integrated with Proton, and Wine covering most windows apps I quit a long time ago.
Linux itself should be more tolerant to Maxwell GPUs and maybe Pascal + GPUs should the m4600 power, post, and let Linux enumerate it.
Optimus is also handled extremly well with Prime offloading for the GPU.
Not making my case to sound like a Linux snob, I’m more or less adding a case to revitalize these old laptops and I think they had more potential.
On my Reddit thread I will keep adding my own personal evidence of what I can get working. I will check here every once in a while if anyone wants to debate/chat/ or ask any questions.
