Not exactly about AI, but kind of related I guess https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/25/billionaire-doomsday-bunkers-end-times This one is also a fun read: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/feb/17/humanitys-remaining-timeline-it-looks-more-like-five-years-than-50-meet-the-neo-luddites-warning-of-an-ai-apocalypse

Sorry, I still can't see anything. But it's like watching at the problem (if there is one) through multiple layers: your screen -> camera photo -> my screen I know I can be sensitive to what you're describing. But that's because I want my gadgets to work perfectly in every aspect, which they never do of course Most of the times if it doesn't bother me too much - I just learn to get used to it. If it's really that notable for you - contact xmg support and see what they say. Could be they'll replace your display panel if it's in fact an issue in your unit and not something that all of their current panels suffer from.
-
What @saturnotaku said. From what I remember, displays on XMG Neo series are far from the best and I doubt one would consider these machines if their priorities for a laptop were in that area, but they're not the worst either. I personally can't see anything out of the ordinary on the pictures.

Anyone running Linux on this one or gen2? Any issues with compatibility, drivers, etc?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/17/openai-boss-sam-altman-wants-7tn-for-all-our-sakes-pray-he-doesnt-get-it I mean, this guy is clearly a lunatic, and likely one of the most dangerous people currently alive. I wonder why no one (who could do anything about it) seems to notice this and/or care.

I don't do much gaming or overclocking to know which one is better, but I'm sure someone else will be able to answer that. But thanks a lot for sharing your impressions on it. This looks like a solid competitor to the rest of gaming laptops that are coming this year. Does it feel big/bulky? Would you feel comfortable hauling it around on its own (w/o the LPP package etc)?
-
@MiRaGe, have you ever laid your hands on any of the earlier XMG Neo's? If so, did they improve things externally? How is the build quality this time around? Anything that you wish was "better" in your laptop? How's the LPP connector? Did they fix leaking issues when you disconnect, or example? Any plans to try Linux?

Facepoop's models are open-source, so likely we'll see a video-generation model from them soon as well. Plus, as you say, numerous others that are open and can be self-hosted and whatnot. So even if malicious actors can't use ClosedAI for their deeds, they still have many other available options. BTW, didn't ClosedAI say the other day they caught a bunch of russian/chinese hackers using their models to perfect their spying capabilities? (UPD: yep, they did https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/microsoft-says-it-caught-hackers-china-russia-iran-using-its-ai-tools-2024-02-14/ )

Nice results @MiRaGe ! Thanks for sharing them and congrats on getting your machine. Wasn't expecting them to start shipping them so soon.

Nah, if it could be done at scale - there would be so much more cases like this. Deepfake will only get you so far in achieving something like this. Still, 25 mil.... that's quite a retirement fund YGive people a tool and they'll find creative ways to abuse it to extremes. I also hope this stuff accelerates regulation, but... idk. Something big needs to actually happen for regulators to start doing and not just talking. "Potentially harmful" scenarios don't seem to have much effect unfortunately. Or they're just too used to close their eyes to whatever bigtech is doing and think "this is just another one of those we-can-let-it-slide-so-long-as-the-money-flows situations"

introduction Please allow me to introduce myself...

Welcome to NBT. Always nice to see more people from the good old NBR. -
The GM6PX8, is that a 17" model? According to XMG, only 17" will have support for retrofitting newer heatsinks from E24. I'm also interested to see the what the differences will be after such an upgrade, which XMG promised to provide once they have spare heatsinks.
-
A challenge? Is that a typo and you meant "a change", or are you actually seeing worse temps than on x170? PS: we have a dedicated thread for the E23 where you can share your impressions of this model:

There was also a writers' strike at the time when season 3 was airing ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007–08_Writers_Guild_of_America_strike ), so that likely contributed to decline in quality as well.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, around mid-way of season 3 it starts to weaken, and season 4 feels bumpy also. But IIRC, it was still watchable, albeit not as strong as the beginning.

Heh, tell me about it. I wasn't hoping we'd get past a couple episodes and I'd have to re-watch it on my own. Now all I hear is "let's go watch galactica"

Yeah, I saw Clevo in your signature :) They are used to be good laptops from what I read. But I thought Clevo and TongFang (which is the original manufacturer of laptops on which XMG Neo / Eluktronics Mech series are based) were kind of different manufacturers, aren't they? From what I could find, both are OEM/ODM, so I don't think that Clevo is a re-brand of TongFang or vise-versa. Unlike XMG Neo, which is, in essence, a re-brand of TongFang, and has nothing to do with Clevo per se. Clevo is also a Taiwanese company, and TongFang is Chinese (based in HK?), from what I remember. At first I read "I'd rather shave a cheese grater" and was trying to picture that somehow Well, I guess your version isn't much more pleasant. Have you had poor experience with Linux, Linux on XMG, or ?

I think this is the reason why they don't even have a liquid cooling option in the 4060/4070 models? But even if it's not that needed for the lower-end GPUs, it would still be nice if the option was there to cool the CPU. Can always install Linux on it :) That's what I would do if I ever buy one. They also have a "sister corp" Tuxedo , which specializes particularly on Linux support for these laptops, but the availability often lags way behind the initial releases of XMG models, and the price differences that I saw before were too much...
-
Oh nice! Please post your impressions once you get it. IDK if I'll be able to spend 4k+ eur on a laptop now (IIRC it was slightly above 4000 on a maxed-out config w/o an SSD and /w Oasis), but I think I would probably try this model first if I was to buy a laptop this year. What made you decide to go with XMG this time around?
-
This year's NEO models are available for pre-orders (4080/4090 models expected in Feb, and 4060/4070 in March). I've never owned an XMG (or their re-branded alternatives) , but what I like about XMG particularly is their comprehensive reviews and comparisons to earlier models (you can read the one for this model here in their xmg_gg subreddit) One notable difference in Neo 17 compared to E23 models is that liquid cooling pipe covers the CPU again (this was available in earlier models, but was removed in E23) when ordered with 4080/4090. I don't get why it's not available with lower-tier GPUs. Some sales trick to make you buy hiher-spec'ed units? (I'm just speculating here as I haven't looked at it close enough, and there might also be some architectural reasons for it) They're also claiming that it will be possible to retrofit the Neo 17 E23 with the E24 thermal unit and they will annouce the price and availability sometime in the future when they have the extra parts in stock. It's also interesting to see performance tests compared to E23, which are barely noticeable (this isn't really suprising since we essentially have the same GPU as last year and a CPU which isn't really an "upgrade"). These numbers can also serve as an indicator of what one can expect from other manufacturers in terms of performance gains in this year's models compared to last year. Neo 16 gets a completely new all-metal chassis, and unlike Neo 17, this feels more of an "upgrade" from the previous version. Just some high-level notable changes: - redesigned heatpipe module - new water port connectors - new LCD panel (2560x1600 / 240Hz with up to 500 nits of brightness and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus) - up to 205W CPU power limit thanks to more efficient water cooling in the new design

haha, it has been so long ago that I even heard the name Bomfunk MC from someone... so many memories lol
-
I think you read/deduced it a bit incorrectly. It says "a year has passed since the introduction of ChatGPT, arguably the first AI system of highly elevated public concern", which to my knowledge is true, not "first AI system ever".
-
Can you provide a link where someone in this thread said that AI is something new? I don't recall there was ever an argument about that.
