Lenovo Legion 2023 discussion

The 2023 Legion lineup is undergoing a name change and a modest design refresh. All will now carry the "Pro" designation and use 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio screens. Ryzen 7000 and Intel 13th-gen CPU options will be available and now pair exclusively with RTX 4000 GPUs. The Pro 5 will go up to RTX 4070, with the Pro 7 offering the 4090. The initial spec sheet shows that only 2560x1600 resolution displays will be available, with up to a 240 Hz refresh rate. In an interesting side note, the laptops will now support up to 140W of charging over USB-C so hopefully this means that Lenovo is adopting the proper PD 3.1 standard so any supported GaN charger will work.

No word on pricing or availability, but with ship dates on last year's Legion 7i showing as far out as June, I'm guessing at least the new Pro 7 will be out sooner rather than later. I also expect these will cost a pretty penny with the usual Lenovo sales not kicking in until many months down the road.

I like the new models especially that all of them will use 16" QHD screens but the Pro 7 looks like a major downgrade with the design imo and removing the fingerprint scanner and its disappointing that the AMD version of the Pro 7 wont be available in the USA..........

Current Laptop:

Lenovo Legion 5: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H 2.8Ghz (Boost: 4.2Ghz), 6GB Nvidia Geforce GTX 1660Ti GDDR6 Memory, 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz IPS display, 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 memory, 512GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD, 1 TB Teamgroup MP34 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD, Windows 10 Home 22H2

What? Why did they remove the fingerprint? Other manufacturer include it especially for TOTL model

No idea. Like i said its a downgrade from the 2022 model. Also it has less USB-C ports

Disappointing.

Being surpassed by competition that have 17"  screens and even 18" also lower than 16" .  Lenovo are getting lazy.

17 inch laptops doesnt sell well as they used to especially Lenovo ones. Going with 16" and smaller is a smart business decision.

Keeping my eye on the Legion Pro 5 AMD. I really dislike the design of the current L5 Pro, it just looks awful to me (like an MSI clone, also dislike MSI). Glad the new Pro 5 resembles the regular 5 series from 2022. Too bad the 7 won't sell with AMD CPUs in the U.S., no idea what Lenovo is thinking on that one.

Availability in April 2023 means you can actually buy one in August 2023, by which point all other manufacturers should be readily available. Especially with all of the prior Covid delays in China, I really don't expect to be able to easily buy these new laptops anytime soon. Lenovo is so irritating in this regard. I hope I am dead wrong.

I'm not impressed with any of these Legion laptops nor the rest of the Intel 13th-gen/Ryzen 7000/RTX 4000 models that have been announced so far. I'm normally an "upgrade every generation" person, but I'm 99% confident I'll be skipping this round as I've been extremely satisfied with my L5 Gen 7. Got it for under $1350, not inclusive of Rakuten cash back, in one of Lenovo's pre-holiday sales. Now that the return window has passed, I tossed in my extra 1 TB Samsung 970 Evo as it only came stock with a 512 GB SSD. Plus, I added 32 GB of G.Skill DDR5. I took a chance on ordering the CL34 kit, and thankfully it runs at those timings.

That's a great deal. Glad you are enjoying it. I was very impressed with the thermals and sustained performance when I had it.

The only reason I'd buy a next gen laptop is to get a 16:10 display, but even then, it's a questionable purchase. I am irritated that Nvidia is again pulling its BS and intentionally mis-labeling GPUs while increasing the price. The laptop 4070 is the worst offender, being only 8gb and 192-bit memory bus. That should be the 4060, and the 4090 should be the 4080. This is the first year that the --70m series GPU is a horrible purchase in terms of value, in my humble opinion. But that also applies now to the 80 and 90 series as well, LOL.

Definitely agreed that the 4070 should be the 4060, the 80 the 70, etc. MicroCenter has revealed the pricing of several 40-series MSI laptops, and it's not looking all that great. I do miss the 16:10 aspect ratio, but I find 1080p to offer more comfortable viewing in a 15-inch laptop than 1600p in a 16-inch because with the latter I still have to use 150% display scaling while 100% works fine with the former.

Good choice because the new 2023 laptops are going to be very expensive especially the confusion with these RTX 4000 GPUs. Your Legion 5 specs especially with the 3070Ti is a great value compared to what the RTX 40 series are offering, Crazy sales going on with them now!.

Yeah its pretty bad according to specs Nvidia revealed. Also the RTX 4070 will have a 128bit bus with 8GB GDDR6 memory with its wattage between 35-115W (+15-25W with dynamic boost and that what makes it more confusing, it also has lesser CUDA cores than the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070Ti making it a mid range GPU.

High end = RTX 4090, RTX 4080

Mid Range = RTX 4070, RTX 4060

Entry= RTX 4050

Wait, seriously? The 4070 has a 128 bit memory bus? I looked at notebookcheck site before and it said 192 bit. And the 4080 is 192 bit? If true that is ridiculous.

I posted about it before in that thread until NVIDIA released the official specs and i see that notebookcheck still hasnt updated the specs yet.

I wish I would upgrade my current L5P 5800, but it seems nothing much improved on Legion series compared to offering from other company. I do like that it has the most USB port compared to other, but still no fingerprint reader? And still no menu key on the keyboard?

What is the consensus on the new Pro 7i with the 4090 for $3299 through B&H? Price is much lower than what I expected, as the launch price of Gen 7 w/ 3080 Ti was higher. I know the 4000 series is overhyped, but if that 4090 can match or come close to desktop 3090 performance, I might have to buy / try it out in the hope that G-sync actually works this go around.

I don't think we're going to see any reviews much before release day.

Probably correct. Lenovo is always so late to the party in terms of actual availability, so if Pro 7i actually will ship out next week that's enticing since who knows what availability (or price) will be after the initial launch batch.

*Edit, going to resist and wait for review and availability from reputable companies. Just looked at B&H return policy and buyer comments, basically once you unpack the laptop it's not returnable unless "defective". The " " emphasizing at their discretion. My luck will be getting a stuck pixel or having a G-sync issue, and B&H wouldn't take a return for that I don't think. I'll go and put B&H in the same basket as Antonline; shady business and avoid at all costs.

Fyi, Legion Pro 7i w/ i9 and 4080 is live on Lenovo's site. I ordered using a 5% off code and 6% cash back through Rakeuten. Delivers end of Feb so I have time to cancel if initial reviews don't look good.

It always been that way. If you want upgrade the RAM to 64GBs it best to buy it from newegg, amazon and other places and do it yourself because OEMs always overcharge for it

I am surprised too, usually the Legion 7 appears in spring or even summer. I am torn about the 4080 vs 4090, not sure how much I'd benefit from 4090.

It is not about upgrading yourself, the spec says max 32GB - meaning 64GB is not supported. Maybe something to do with the overclocked configuration, I am not sure.
