kenny27
I am working on making some all copper heatsinks for the R2, if anyone is interested please let me know. Just looking for some input on Primary GPU heatsink variations / achieving compatibility with as many GPUs as possible. There are 3 variations that I can think of: 1. Standard Dell AMD heatsink 2. 1070 heatsink with fins cut out of the heatsink 3. an RTX 5000 and RTX A4500 heatsink with an offset core. For the standard layout you can see in the Image attached I am planning to make areas 1 2 3 and 5 as close to the dell heatsink as possible both in coverage and heights. Is there any value in making area 4 the same level as area, are there any cards used in the m18x that could use this? And are there any other ideas/modifications I should be including or having a variation for? 1 M18x R2 | 3920XM | 16GB DDR3 @ 2133Mhz | 980M SLI | 256GB Samsung 840 Evo + 1TB HHD | Audioengine D1 | Beyordynamic DT990 | Corsair M65
Azther
do you also intend on making CPU heatsinks? I for one have been looking around for a 3pipe heatsink for some time with little success due to how rare they are Alienware M18X R2 | Nebula Red | i7 3740QM [OC'd to 4Ghz] | 32GB RAM | NVIDIA Quadro P4000 | 75hz OC'd Display | MXM to NVMe Adapter with Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB Alienware 17 R4 | i7 6700HQ | 16GB RAM | GTX 1070 | 100hz OC'd LG 1080p Display Alienware M18X R1 | Space Black | i7 2960XM | 16GB RAM | GTX 780M
kenny27
Yes hoping to make some CPU heatsinks. I haven't looked to hard yet but I'm thinking biggest issue will be getting the right spring and screw setup. Azther
ah sweet, do you think its feasible to make special extended length ones for those who dont use a 2nd gpu? so the cpu heatsink can take advantage of the 2nd unused gpu fan? kenny27
Thats not a bad idea, Yes it is possible there is enough room to run the heatpipes over the secondary mxm slot, will be a pricey heatsink tho for maybe not much gained... running out of room on the cpu for the extra heatpipes. I'd also thought of giving the primary gpu 2 heatsinks and swapping the cpu heatsink over to the secondary gpu, but again will be tricky to make. Azther
even if the gains arent much, id be willing to pay the premium for extra gains and to also not let that spare fan go to waste honestly. Im sure extending the 3 pipes over to the additional radiator would help with cooling the XM chips Alienware M18X R2 | Nebula Red | i7 3740QM [OC'd to 4Ghz] | 32GB RAM | NVIDIA Quadro P4000 | 75hz OC'd Display | MXM to NVMe Adapter with Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB Alienware 17 R4 | i7 6700HQ | 16GB RAM | GTX 1070 | 100hz OC'd LG 1080p Display Alienware M18X R1 | Space Black | i7 2960XM | 16GB RAM | GTX 780M

mujtaba
That would be such a cool project 🙂 Subscribing I think the first step is to get out the existing heat-pipes out and try to make one that first exactly. That would a) allow for benchmarking and b) let you see to what tolerance can you make a heatsink with all the pipes. welding, etc. I would also suggest probing /r/AskEngineers on reddit. The specialized subreddit are usually very helpful and friendly.

Azther
it suits my needs currently, even with a single pipe the 3740qm peaks at 80c full load, or hovers around the 90s if i overclock it. still debating if i wanna run it at those temps or not (overclocking it), it should be fine since its limit is 100c but i still worry Alienware M18X R2 | Nebula Red | i7 3740QM [OC'd to 4Ghz] | 32GB RAM | NVIDIA Quadro P4000 | 75hz OC'd Display | MXM to NVMe Adapter with Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB Alienware 17 R4 | i7 6700HQ | 16GB RAM | GTX 1070 | 100hz OC'd LG 1080p Display Alienware M18X R1 | Space Black | i7 2960XM | 16GB RAM | GTX 780M
