980m died 😭

Video is shaky because I've rerecorded this a few times, so my arm was getting tired. I think it's a VRAM issue since it crashes to a screen that has a color, however I think it's fully dead as this is after modding the BIOS to have a lower core clock, and a 1000MHz lower memory clock. Windows 10 is the only one that sometimes boots in normal mode, 8.1/10 are the only ones that sometimes boots into safe mode. Safe mode doesn't crash if I can get it to boot, but the artifacts are still there.

If the 980m manages to pass the MATS test, there is a more in depth test called MODS. There are tutorials online that I don't have time to find right now, but are really helpful as MODS is very confusing to use. Watch this video and see if it truly is a VRAM issue. If you don't mind, send the log from MATS after you run the test and we can go from there.

Well, I decided to put the old FirePro M4000 it came with back in. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it's not something that can be easily fixed.

Well there's many things that could be wrong, but the most likely suspect would probably be 1 or many VRAM chips. If there are many dead/dying VRAM chips, then the source problem could be either a dead memory controller on the core, or the power rail for the VRAM is dying/dead. If it is just 1 VRAM chip that is giving you problems, then the fix is most likely going to be replacing the memory chip, but could also be replacing a dead resistor that is near the "failing" memory chip.

So, I tried the thing, but it only gets this far. Usually it reboots instantly after showing this, but sometimes it hangs.

That seems to be MODS, I am assuming you have tried MATS first. MODS is really confusing to use. I've never needed to use it, but I would assume there are guides out there of how to use it. I am in a discord server for a guy named Tech Cemetery who fixes GPUs. His server might have a guide of how to use MODS, I'll dig through there and see if I can find anything. Its a patreon only server though, and I'm only in because I was in before he switched it, so I can't type in any of the channels. My assistance may be limited.

Oh, I was on mobile, and I didn't want to use my speaker to watch the vid, so I just tried what seemed obvious, which was Rufus and the image. Tomorrow I can try MATS.

Unless I missed something, this should be MODS.

Yeah, MODS is difficult to use. MATS is a bit easier, but can't diagnose all issues. Use MATS first and then try MODS if MATS does not yield any results.

yeah I actually agree. I miss the old MXM days. I remember ording a 6990m laptop and the next year a 7970m came out and all I had to pay was 500 for it for double the performance...but to be positive if you sell your old laptop and use that money for the upgrade you might be able to bounce higher with like 500 outta pocket. thoughts?

Do you have multimeter ? I can help you.

I know how you're feeling. I would never exchange mine 8570w for anything. I live from repairing notebooks, and let me tell you, our notebooks are far from being unusable or being worse than newer ones. Maybe in some special scenarios they may be slower.. otherwise as for normal users, they are beasts indeed.
I used mine with Clevo GTX 980m, now I use Quadro P5200. I don't know where you from, but I though about selling it on this forum.

Cheers!

It is not really a problem, those inductors we need to check are also very big
You have to check with ohm measurement every coil on mxm board, one probe to coil and second to ground (for ex. mounting place for screws). Write those as numbered

And by the way, can you show me what heatsink are you using ? I'm asking because your HP shipped with AMD card and there are 2 different ones for this laptop.

So I was a bit busy, but I've finally gotten around to it. I probed both sides and found the same numbers. Not sure what measurement unit it is as my multimeter doesn't say.

I bought the K4000 heatsink since it was cheap and I heard it was the same as the K5000 heatsink. I can take a pic if necessary, but this is the one.

Values are in good range for this card, mine have similiar ones, so that shouldn't be power problem. But I will check inductor number 4 to be 100% sure, because this one is for GDDR power I think.. 24 ohms may be too small value for it. Give me few days I will check.
Yes, you have correct heatsink for mxm 3.0b cards, original one for ATI M4000 is singlepiped mxm 3.0a. There are only two version for GPU and for CPU. Single heatpipe for dual cores and dual heatpipe for quadcores. Did you used some thermal pad for VRM and memory chips ?
Also, if you could attach some HQ pictures of your GTX from both sides.
Lastly, check how it behaves on VGA output or displayport only ! If screen will get frozen, click Caps Lock / Numlock and check if diode turn on/off.

Cheers!

EDIT. Check your vbios version with GPU-Z and driver version also please.

Here's images of my card
I used thermal pads on my card, I'll attach the image guide I used too.

I don't have it installed, and not sure when I could be bothered to reinstall the card, install 10, install drivers, and see what a second monitor does.

Sorry for long time no writing.
Those artifacts can be problem with video ram or main chip on that mxm board. You could check which one is problem by using hot air station or something similar. With hot air station you it directly above every video ram chip, one at time, check in system if there are still artifact, and go to next one until you find which one. 400 degrees celsius and 8 to 10 seconds is suffice.
If GPU core is not problem then there is chance to repair this card : ) replacing one or two video ram is worth it. Replacing main core is totally not worth. Cheers

EDIT. By checking video on VGA output or DP output you can be 70% more sure what's problem. In case of artifacts on every output, there is a big chance of vRAM problem. If this problem exist mostly on internal LCD - then main chip is 99% faulty.
