I use three Precision laptops; should I undervolt them?

Recommended Posts

I use three laptops with the following configurations (I'm starting a single thread so that I won't need to post in three different owners' threads at once):

  • Precision 7750, Core i9-10885H & Quadro RTX 5000
  • Precision 7740, Xeon E-2276M & Quadro RTX 3000
  • Precision M6800, Core i7-4800MQ & Quadro K3100M

My questions are as follows:

  1. Should I attempt undervolting them?
  2. Is it possible to find unlocked BIOS's for these?
  3. As far as the 7740 is concerned, will I gain anything from fiddling with the dGPU vBIOS?
  4. In general, are there any meaningful upgrade paths for my laptops?

Thank you very much in advance! 🥹

Absolutely worth it!  For the 7740, you can use Throttlestop to increase the PL1 from 60W default up to 75W (Dell IC-limited).  With a good undervolt, the 2276M will run at maximum turbo speeds at <75W (i.e. indefinitely with no frequency drops).  If you know of some way to increase the power limit on the RTX 3000, I'm sure the forums here would be very interested.

For the 10885H, a reasonable goal is >=4.0 GHz all-core with a good undervolt and mild tweaking of power settings.

Precision 7520 / Xeon E3-1535m v6 / 32 gb DDR4 2666 MHz CL15 / GTX 1650 Mobile / LP156QHG-SP(V1)

Precision 7540 / i9-9980HK / 32 gb DDR4 2666 MHz CL15 / RTX 4000 / LP156QHG-SP(V1) / Delta Fans
