M18X R2 Quadro RTX 5000

Recommended Posts

So I am considering a second round of upgrades to my old M18X R2. Currently I have a 3840qm, 32gb 1866mhz ram, 512gb nvme, and aetina gtx 1080. I am considering picking up what looks to be an aetina Quadro rtx 5000 and while I’m in there either a 3920xm or 3940xm. My question for anyone that may have done this upgrade is what did you do for the heatsink? Did you mod the stock heatsink? Im pretty sure the die location between the two mxm 3.0b cards are different so I’m wondering if there’s anything I should be aware of before I make some more poor purchasing decisions as I don’t really use the laptop I just like to tinker with it.

I just came across this heatsink I wonder if that would work better then modding my stock heatsink.

This option will definitely be better than the standard one. It provides for video chip displacement and better cooling, including video memory.

Ok so I contacted the seller for the 3080 heatsink and he said it doesn’t line up. But he can make one to fit. Now I’m wondering it the quadro is worth the effort. I remember 20 series being a small upgrade over the 10 series and mostly being a feature upgrade. I don’t think I’d be using much dlss at 1080p. Do I spend the extra money and just go 3080? Does anyone with experience with these cards have an opinion on which to option to go with?  Or should I just stick with the 1080 as it still works well enough even though it’s about to lose driver support.
