pcpartpicker Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Hi. I have this issue with Alienware 17 R3 laptop with 6820HK and GTX 980M. Most older games I installed either crash to desktop or some even freeze, when sound is coming but picture is frozen. I thought that it is thermals but running MSI Kombustor or even Aida64 system stability test, and everything works normal in synthetics. Prime 95 also works normal, laptop does not freeze In Unigine Heaven. But I noticed one detail and that is that D3D9 (I suppose direct-x 9.0) games run completely fine. I tried different driver version, one from website for this model of laptop, and the latest GeForce GTX 980M driver, but I am geting same issue with both drivers. There are some warning messages after crashto desktop, in Rise of The Tomb Raider it is mentioning "DX Error Device Hung". In that game, I even switched to D3D11 mode (turned off direct-x 12) same issue. I tried lowering graphics settings in games, no luck. Today tried Crysis 1, which is I believe direct-x 10 game, immediately after game starts it switches me to desktop and I believe game closes. Temps of CPU and GPU are as expected for this laptop (I am running MSI Afterburner OSD), and when freezing happens GPU temp is around (79-81) C and CPU around 71 C. I have a laptop cooling pad with 6 fans and temps while gaming are not abnormal, though fans kick in loud. Is there a way to resolve this issue? Most of the forums told me it needs repaste and change of thermal pads, but as I said most of synthetic benchmark work pretty normal. If the temps are the cause, I suppose it would crash even in synthetics. I need your help, just plz don't tell me, laptop is old, forget about it, or GPU is failling. I contacted some famous youtuber who fixes Del/Alienware laptops he told me to run HeavyLoad software for like 2-3 hours and ig anything abnormal happens, GPU is failling. But it passed the test, no freezing, nothintg unusual, but even after that later he told me that GPU is failling, which I strongly disagree because I'd get issues in direct-x 9.0 games. So what do you think? What is left to try?
