M18x R1 - What is max configuration possible?

Sniper_X

Recommended Posts

I have an Alienware M18x R1.

I have upgraded the RAM to 32 GB,

I have a Intel Core i7 Mobile Extreme Edition  i7-2960XM CPU I plan to install.

Regarding the GPU's, what is the max config possible for highest performance?

Will I need to flash a modded BIOS?

Sorry for the n00b questions, but there is just so much posted about these things, that it's hard to nail down who is talking about R1 vs R2, and what MAX config i really working, vs/. which are being "tried out".

At this point, the GTX 880M is the best Nvidia card that can be installed (SLI if you want). The R9 m290x is also an option but I'm not sure how it compares to the 880M these days. With AMD's driver support it could be a better option than the Nvidia but I believe some people had issues trying them in crossfire (some threads on TechInferno).

Yes, you will need the unlocked BIOS which is available on this site.

Alienware Aurora R15 - i9-13900KF - RTX 4090 - 32GB DDR5

Alienware M18x R2 - i7-3920XM - GTX 970M - 16GB 1866Mhz DDR3L - Samsung 970 Evo with MXM to NVMe Adapter - Custom Delft Blue

Alienware X51 - i7-3770 - NO GPU - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3  Alienware M17x R3 - i7-2760QM - GTX 580M - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3

Alienware Area 51 ALX - i7-975 Extreme - GTX 980 - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3   Alienware Aurora R2 - i7-3770K - GTX 670FTW - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3

Alienware Aurora R4 ALX - i7-3930K - GTX 1060 - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3        Alienware Aurora R4 ALX - i7-3930K - GTX 670FTW - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3

I upgraded mine to Nvidia GTX 1070 mobile version and single beats sli (two cards as software hardly uses/older now).

Your need to apply an unlocked bios via flashing using a boot disk and needs doing before swapping the card.  If locked then your get blank screen!

I am thinking of getting hard disk upgraded as now have 1 free graphics slot:

Do you have any firestrike or time spy results? Curious to see how 1070 is performing in this machine. If you really got it working on R1 (not AW 18 not M18xR1 then you will need to use something like duet to boot from that NVMe adapter)

880M SLI

M290X CrossFire

Apparently GP106 card (the ones on ebay called GP106, not a gtx 1060 etc.) work (someone else tested it)

Maxwell tesla M6 also works apparently?

I personally run 880M SLI in my M18xR1. I am curious if the user above truly got 1070 working in M18xR1 or if they have Alienware 18 R1 and are confusing with M18xR1, because no one else has gotten it working before. Would be awesome if it works and if it does they could make a guide.

this is rather interesting, got a link to the posts with the GP106 or tesla m6 working? or was it just word of mouth? my r1 has a single 780m in it currently but would be awesome if i could put something higher in there to modernise it like my r2. I didnt go with 880m due to it being a heavily overclocked 780 and apparently thats lead to failure issues?

I have 880M SLI in M18xR1 and 880M in M17xR3, all 3 run cool and work fine. They were all brand new GPUs from Eurocom so idk if they'relater builds but yeah.

That's gp106
