  1. yeah i took a look, and it is the dell 1601 card. there are drivers for it, but for ubuntu 12, and i tried to brute install it on ubuntu to see if theres any signs of life, alas theres nothing, so the next best thing i could do right now is harvest the wifi card out of a latitude e7240 i have lying around, and probably try to see if it works with this machine (i know it runs well in linux because it has debian 11 on it). i also tried to check out optimus to see if it would work, this is the error i get: i have the latest drivers for this machine, and the nvidia card is currently disabled as it is, but even with the graphics enabled, i still get the same error. heres a picture of the driver: its not bad right now, if anything i have access to an outlet, but it would be nice to have better battery life on this machine, its really growing on me to be honest. as of right now, this laptop is doing great. only have a couple of gripes still, like with the lower ac adapter warning, since i am using one of those amazon GaN chargers + usb -> barrel converters, and still struggling with battery not going to lie to you. I also found a japanese keyboard off ebay, but its for the latitudes of this era. might try to see if i can retrofit it in, since i did test it, and it surprisingly works with this machine. considering swapping out the dvd drive with a hdd sled for more storage space, but i think 1tb off 2 drives is more than enough. repaste with ptm and keyboard mods after im done with my finals for this sem.
  2. so, a couple days have passed, and I finally got the 32 gigs of ram, which set me back 40 bucks, and still waiting on the keyboard. as of right now, the laptop is snappy and does everything I want, from development to running virtual machines, and so forth. only gripe I have is the battery, but it's a mobile workstation, and an older one at that, so I can cut it some slack for that. the weight and the size aren't really a concern, even though I take it with me everywhere (even to college), and the keyboard is so nice to type on not gonna lie to you, brings me back to covid high lmao. I plan on installing debian or ubuntu, and I was wondering where I can find wifi drivers for this machine, as this laptop has a "proprietary" wifi card. I might swap it out with a newer intel 6x6 card, but I'd like to try to find the drivers before having to resort to that.
  3. Hey there everyone, so recently I decided to pull out my old m4800, and man oh man did the nostalgia hit me like a truck. I originally got this laptop from my dad's friend in like 2016/2017, since his work was phasing these out for newer models, and I heavily used it until 2022, when I needed more power for college, and invested in an XPS 9520. 2 years, a bunch of laptops later, the battery went cack in my XPS, and kinda needing a laptop, I decided to bring this beast out once again. The specs are: i7 4800mq 8gb ram (never upgraded shockingly) 512gb no-name ssd nvidia k1100 dgpu 1080p LVDS display (checked with the service tag) running windows 10 enterprise 1909 Other than cleaning out the fans, repasting with PTM, and upgrading the ram, what are some other QoL upgrades that I should do? I really dig the red accents on the m4700/m4600 keyboards, so I plan on getting a backlit variant of that keyboard. I do have other machines that can do my bidding, but they're in various states of repair/function, as I have an addiction of going to electronic recycling centers lmao.
