Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
DynamiteZerg replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
Look at what the cat dragged in! I'm waiting for the thermal paste and pads to turn up before trying to get it installed into the M6800 in lieu of the P5000M. -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades

Interesting. I found a seller on Taobao with the 4980HQ converted to PGA. He mentioned it can support dual channel but only a single ram slot on each channel but I'm now wondering how is that possible on any laptop with 2 channels and 4 ram slots? So could it be that it can only support a single channel with 2 ram slots? Much like what others have discovered? Not sure if it is worth the $50 to give it a try... 😆 That seller has pretty good reputation on Taobao and at least he is honest and upfront. *Edit: I am checking with my Chinese friend to make sure I did not translate the message incorrectly...* *Edit2: I checked with my Chinese friend and he confirmed that my translation of the message from the seller is indeed correct. He is also puzzled by that response.* -
Really? On all 4 memory slots? Can you reference the post?

Precision M6800 questions and upgrades

@AaronD I'm glad that my old instructions can still help a fellow M6800 user! Not bad for something from donkey years ago and was a result of my experiments! Enjoy the P5000. It is a beast compared to the GTX980M or M5000M. I'm now suffering from upgrade disease... itching at getting the P5200 or RTX3000 and 4980HQ (though it seems like only 2 ram slots will work). I tried looking for Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon but I couldn't find it on the webpage. Can you point me to where it is? *Edit: Found it on some online archive and the SHA256 matches so is legit* -

I wouldn't mind taking it off your hands if the price is right and it works in the M6800 with the appropriate X-bracket! -

Yup, looking at trying it out. I've got too much free time on my hands and want to push the M6800. Might even try the 4980HQ but it looks like with that CPU only 2 ram slots work... so I might just stick to the 4940MX. -

Was reading through macrumours and the member (colohgc) shared the vBIOS he created for his P5200 that was installed in his M6800. Only issue is he did the 120W mod which, according to him, is safe only for Rev D of the card (and maybe Rec C - not tested). He mentioned it is not safe for Rev A or B which seems to be power limited to 100W. Plus the fact that the Rev D card he got did not have a vBIOS chip on the card and he had to source for one, program it and then solder onto the board. "This 120W mod it safe olny on rev D and presumably on C. The rev A anb B of this card have weak power section and it may explode." https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/imac-2011-maxwell-and-pascal-gpu-upgrade.2300989/post-32762807 Not sure if anyone here knows how to edit the vBIOS back to 100W envelope for Rev A and B? P5200-M6800-120W.zip I managed to reach colohgc on his Youtube channel and he pointed me to a different P5200 vBIOS for the M6800. The description is - 100 Wat as default, settable to 115W, 85*C temp limit. P5200-M6800-100W_def-to-max115W-max85C_temp.zip -

Is the PNY RTX 3k any different to the one I shared from Fleabay? The one on Fleabay seems to be standard mxm layout. So the only question is why it didn't work in the M6800. Maybe a vBIOS issue? -

Here are the pictures as promised @AaronD It shows as "Unknown video card" with a weird amount of vram. By disabling the switchable graphics, it also switched to showing the bootup sequence on my external monitors. I remember seeing my old instructions for flashing using Linux Mint archived from NBR. The link is in one of the posts here. Let me dig around... and there we go! https://www.nbrchive.net/forum.notebookreview.com/threads/graphics-card-upgrade-for-m6800.806352/page-17#post-10748094 -

Interesting that I cannot find any ADLINK RTX 3000 for sale on Taobao or Aliexpress but there are heaps in Fleabay and the sellers are all from China! 2025/09/02 - Update from eBay seller of the RTX 3000. He says it is not compatible with the M6800? I'm sure it's the ADLINK RTX 3000! @sliderfra Update - ok seller said he had a customer that attempted it and it did not work. Here's the listing: NEW Dell Alienware HP Clevo Quadro RTX3000 6GB MXM 3.0 Type B VIDEO CARD | eBay Oh I've forgotten to take screenshots of the BIOS screen. My bad... I'll get to it tonight! -

Anyone tried a Quadro P5200 in the M6800? Does it need an Engineering vBIOS to work as well? -

Yeah noticed it too. Just doesn't really align up. Only that generic RTX 3000 that I found fits the bill because it is the same size and physical screw holes are in the same place as my P5000 mobile. However, it's performance is lower than my P5000 mobile so really no point. -

Looks like the HP cards are a good fit too! There's even RTX 4000 and RTX 5000 cards but the dimensions are a bit longer on the right side of the card where the memory modules are and not sure if it will be a problem fitting (I remembered this was discussed in NBR but could not remember the conclusion). And also it draws 110W versus 100W max for our MXM 3.0B slot. My P5000 mobile works fine but not sure if RTX4000 or RTX5000 will fry the slot. Maybe RTX 3000 is the maximum we can fit for the M6800 due to the dimensions and power consumption? Found a version of the RTX 3000 that is the same dimensions and size as the P5000 Mobile / GTX980M. That one would definitely work I reckon! -
Is the HP RTX 3000's performance any better than the P5000 mobile? From the looks of Internet comparisons and benchmarks P5000 mobile beats the RTX 3000 hands down but not the RTX 4000 or 5000. RTX 3000's dimensions do look a tad bigger than the P5000 mobile / GTX980M (just found a version of the same size and setup as the P5000 mobile / GTX980M). Will it cause any issues in fitting into the M6800 (shouldn't be a problem for the RTX 3000 with the same dimensions as the P5000 mobile / GTX980M)? How about the HP RTX 4000 or 5000? The dimensions are a bit bigger on the right side where the memory modules are. I think this point was visited before in NBR... but I cannot remember the outcome.

Pray tell, where did you get your RTX 3000? Did it work upon replacing your existing GPU without having issues like the P5000 where it will not work with Windows unless you flash the engineering vBIOS? -

Thanks for the heads up! I bought the AX210HMW which is a WiFi 6E card... now getting the BE200HMW from Taobao to upgrade my M6800 to WiFi 7! Time to put the WiFi 7 router to good use now! I can order a few more parts for the M6800 at the same time. The LCD screen is showing its age and seems to be falling apart... -

Wow... finally found this forum! The notebookreview forum is no longer around and I was trying to see whether my M6800 can be upgraded again to maybe an RTX3000 or better! Yes I still have the P5000 in my M6800 and it is working fine in Window 10. It will need to be flashed to the "engineering sample" vBIOS for Windows and does not need it if using Linux. If you have no other way like me and needs to flash the vBIOS using the M6800, you need to do it under Linux. Look like the link to my archived post in notebookreview showed how I did it! Wow... brings back memories!
