  1. A very niche offering. I wonder how many of those would be expected to sell globally. To be fair they did bump the caches significantly in 14900K, so it’s a bit more than a 13900K “Super.” marketing gimmick.
  2. Ha! Checking AIB's websites for stock is indeed a good idea... even more stock that way. BTW ASUS have no shame whatsoever https://shop.asus.com/us/90yv0id7-m0nm00-rog-matrix-rtx4090-p24g-gaming.html
  3. Looks like JO’s fav topic: Interestingly, and sadly, none of the antitrust bills have actually passed.
  4. Well, it kind of makes sense, right? While 4080S is not a 4090 killer outright, the performance gap between them does not really justify a $800 premium. You would expect the prices to get closer, and that’s what’s happening. A lot now rides on how much 4080S stock NVidia needs to shift, and how many “inventory management” tricks they are willing to pull in order to support the prices. 5. Having issued a fair warning about the existential risks of AI, Sam F. 7. Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in the songs section… BM is spot on.

  9. Those are decent temps on air? Anyway, the issue is that you got yourself into a launch buying frenzy / pressure cooker and ended up with a weird card with no water blocks available. Could that be because it has just been launched (I don’t recall seeing those Expert cards before)? Maybe, but by going with a more standard gamer/enthusiast design you would have been guaranteed availability of a water block, and the temps would have been better on air. Then again, you could have just sat on your 3090 a little longer.. I would respectfully suggest that you tune out the 4090 bros here for now and focus on the house, instead of dropping extra $800 on a GPU in an untimely fashion. Have you budgeted all the spend after you complete? Frankly if you even take a little break from gaming as a result, you will be more than OK - trust me. Anyway, GPU prices and availability should improve in the weeks to come (would be my guess), so you will likely be rewarded for your patience. On a more philosophical note, the pursuit of ‘the best’ can prove problematic for most people, not least because going from ‘great’ to ‘the best’ tends be very costly and provide quite diminishing returns. OK, so you drop that $2k on a gaming video card if that helps you feel better (the reality is that very few people would actually care I guess), but can you also have the best body/health, car, house/neighbourhood, career, partner, family, kids in college, vacations, yacht etc? It’s a road towards suffering. BTW It’s also how unscrupulous P2W game developers (e.g. EA) make money - people drop hundreds/thousands to have the best virtual character in a game, most likely as a substitute for achieving “the best” in other areas of life… I would suggest the better way of looking at this is to ask: “Is this the best way to spend those resources ($ and time)?”. If at one point you determine that getting a gaming GPU is the best way to spend $2k for you then go ahead, but either way - unlike the futile pursuit of the best/most expensive - you can win the optimal resource utilisation challenge every day, and derive great and lasting pleasure from that.
  10. Wish we could get some betting market going around this stuff, too easy lol. “Will a gamer/OCer, previously running a 1KW 24GB graphics card settle for a slim/blower 16GB model designed for professionals, with the castrated 4080S still being about 25% slower than the 4090? Note: saving for a house!” 🙂
  11. It’s a “friends with benefits” kind of arrangement, where customers too often end up providing the benefits.
  12. This just in: https://www.reuters.com/technology/amazon-steers-consumers-higher-priced-items-lawsuit-claims-2024-02-09/
  13. Here I see prices ranging £960-1060 (gigab…, Zotac, Palit, Inno3D). Taking the exchange rate and tax into account, these are roughly USD prices ex sales tax. The question is whether availability of $1000 4080S' will affect demand for 4090s, given that scuMVidia clearly nerfed the former (more cores etc. - same performance). 4090 stock to boot BTW starting at £1720 (Palit) and £1750 (our Gigab… friends again). The rest (MSI etc) generally in £1800-2000 range. I can also see some US stock around $1800 https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-4090-gv-n4090gaming-oc-24gd/p/N82E16814932550?Item=N82E16814932550 https://www.newegg.com/pny-geforce-rtx-4090-vcg409024tfxpb1/p/N82E16814133849?Item=9SIBN7EJY04295
  14. 4080 S is available in the US again (+10% scalping tax). Nice to see 4090 prices getting more in line as well. Further correction to come on the back of 4080S availability, and particularly if the AI hype bubble starts bursting in anger.
  15. The Zephyrus line has always been just think and light suckery - soldered RAM etc.
  16. OK, no posts regarding gross issues around working conditions at Musk’s X-companies I guess. Anyone remotely following the topic must be aware of the pattern anyway.
  17. Interestingly, this cognitive phenomenon can affect both those with the relevant cash to spare, and those who would be materially better off spending it differently. I guess most likely to occur in those with arguably far too much disposable cash though, e.g. a very mild example here: I guess having a NYC banker dad helps lol
  18. Unsurprisingly, it looks like there is insufficient availability. It’s a gigantic population, lots of people with plenty of cash to spare, not to mention the AI-driven demand. It’s a bit like asking “Why do some people drive tigers around in their Bentleys?”
  19. A quick look on ebuy7 etc suggests the going price for a 4090D over there is in the ballpark for $3300. 4080S fetches $2k+. ”Hmm, much demand there is, sell to the highest bidder NVidia and scalpers an incentive have I think.”
  20. @serpro69 Yeah, even crypto's mass illicit use did not lead to any outright bans. Of course, by default the majority body of corrupt politicians won't do enough in time, so the best case scenario here is that we get to really deep trouble, so deep that that governments have to respond, but not so deep it's too late. We will need a lot of luck to get through this. For an example discussion of regulatory inaction, please see the largely useless (apart from the AI risk conference) UK government: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/feb/06/techscape-uk-artificial-intelligence-government-regulation They are likely afraid Google would move DeepMind to the US in case a harsh regimen is imposed - a race to the regulatory (if not literal) bottom.
  21. Pretty striking, but probably not something that can be done at scale, as opposed to this: Inside the Underground Site Where ‘Neural Networks’ Churn Out Fake IDs The silver lining here is this will probably accelerate the necessary regulatory interventions. Or so we can hope.
  22. That’s quite strange. Checked again and a fair amount of stock, even on Amazon which normally is more of a scalpers’ den. This could be due to a number of reasons: * Less demand in the UK - the country has been on a continuing downward trajectory since Brexit, virtually everyone has gotten poorer, and now Putin’s invasion of Ukraine pulled the rug from under people’s feet via the inflation * HW prices in the UK tend to be about 15% higher in $ terms to begin with * Consequently less scalper activity * HW is cheapest to buy in the US, makes sense for scalpers to buy there then smuggle globally * Jensen is actually not that fond of America 😉 Probably a combination of the above, however, this is still atypical. Will prob normalise soon.
  23. Scalpers are scumbags, but fortunately in this market they primarily get the vulnerable people who for some reason are seeking to buy a product at launch, made by a company known for paper launches and other inventory shenanigans such as NVidia. We know that with the more desirable NVidia products there won’t be enough cards on day 1, and probably not in the first month or so. Hopefully, relatively few people actually are (or willingly put themselves in) a position to need that. I already see some 4080S in stock at around 1k BTW. The suggestion that kids “intuitively understand” technology is ridiculous. They can intuitively use it, if they have been exposed to it from the young age, but they tend to have a limited if any understanding of what’s actually going on. * Does a kid doomscrolling through social media understand why they are doing so? * Does a kid playing Roblox instead of doing their homework understand why they find the former far more interesting? * Does a kid grinding to farm more loot boxes in an online game understand why they are compelled to do so? The answer is obviously 3x “no” in most cases. Now, do the parents know the answers ? Some do, but most probably don’t either. The challenge is to get educated as much as possible and help the kids, ideally leading by example, otherwise they are at a risk of becoming technoslaves. Perhaps the saddest situation would be knowing what’s going on and still losing the battle like Cipher:
  24. Yep, that’s what I meant by “do so consistently”. It looks like he is just not confident getting rid of twitter.com is a good idea lol
  25. My guess is that Musk will just continue carrying this, since nothing probably strikes his gigaego more, and that’s what obviously matters a lot. BTW the X/Twitter rename is just awkward. What was wrong with Twitter, the brand? If he wanted to start using this to build up his X dream, why not rename it to Twitter/X.. and do so consistently. Erratic.
