Data loss after write load: WD confirms problems with SanDisk Extreme (Pro)

After a report by Ars Technica about increased failures in the external SSDs of the SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk Extreme Pro series, Western Digital has admitted a bug that is to be fixed with a firmware update. Since there is a potential risk of data loss, the problem must be rated as critical.

The following external SSDs from SanDisk or the parent company Western Digital are said to be affected: Don't use them for important data or Backup!!!!!!!!!! Even if there come  a fix.... I wouldn't trust them for the said tasks

SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00)

SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 4TB (SDSSDE81-4T00)

SanDisk Extreme Pro 2TB (SDSSDE81-2T00)

SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00)

WD My Passport 4TB (WDBAGF0040BGY)

So, where is it? Why is it not released already?

Yes, that is a rhetorical question. I don't own any of them. I have a couple of WD Passports that are too old and slow to use and they sucked the day they were new. They were slower than normal when slow was normal.

You'd probably have better luck buying a no-name Chinese SSD from Wish.com at this point.

Not sure I want Chineese Junk. Pair it with Apple hardware and you get a disaster.... What is worse bro @Mr. Fox? Apple hardware or rest of the HW in this ssd?

  • 5 weeks later...

not good, I always find it funny how companies release their garbage and only rectify it once a lawsuit ensues. why don't they just do the right thing from the start, as soon as there is a problem correct it and take the nessessary measures, don't just sit on it until your precious money is at stake.  You would think its just a few corrupt companies but the truth is it's every company, not one honest company exists unless we are talking red cross/blue cross or a non for profit company
