M17x R4 sata SSD raid worth it?

Recommended Posts

i've heard the sata ports run faster than the msata ports? i then got to thinking about how even bios/software raids with SSD back then gave atleast a small uplift in performance. wanted to know if anyonme knew if 2 sata SSDs in raid were worth it? i'f gonna get a sata SSD, might as well get 2 matching SSDs. assuming video card upgrades don't intrude on the sata drive location. mine are free now with a gtx980m

I don't think it's worth it. It's better to use the two separately. The only option where this may be appropriate is if you need to load one game or file larger than one SSD, and you have a second one. Then you can do Raid 0 and you will have enough memory. In terms of speed, it won’t affect games, etc., it will affect if you constantly transfer between different SSDs or etc., where the speed of the second storage will be above 500 MB/s. But raid is unnecessary, more wear and tear occurs on both SSDs. And there is a greater chance that one of them will break. And it will be impossible to restore the data later.

Regarding the speed of mSATA and SATA - Sata is indeed faster, since it uses SATA 3 speed, when mSATA uses SATA 2 speed. 600 and 300 MB/s, respectively. this applies to our Alienware M17x/M18x and 17/18. Other laptops - I don’t know how, maybe they use full SATA 3 speed.

Believe me you will not want to use several ssd disks on this machine. yes you can almost double the speed of access to files getting a speed of about 900-1000 mb/s using a raid of two sata ssd, but then well think about cooling the chip pch - it will be very noticeably warm, and its heatsink is connected to the CPU cooling that additionally adds temperature.

so if i double the cooling capacity no biggie then? or i wonder if the CPU will just run 100% all the time with an SSD raid and an RTX 2000 series GPU. i do have plans for substantial cooling capacity upgrades.

EDIT: i also see 2TB mSata SSDs area thing but, all off brands
