M6600 No Power

Recommended Posts

I bought a M6600 for parts the seller claimed MB is probably dead.

wanted to ask here in case it’s a dumb issue.

AC charger doesn’t cause any lights to turn on. Pressing power button does nothing.

I checked to make sure ram is installed, cmos battery cpu etc.

any other trick I can try before I end up replacing the MB? I have a M6800 coming that has a battery so I’m going to try its battery in here in case the dc port is messed up or something.

Hi,

if you don't have a multimeter, maybe go see a local tech repair shop.

If they are professional and good at their job, they should have a diagnostic fee (probably 10-20 dollars/euros/ or

equivalent) they can look and see if it is an easy problem such as a shorted capacitor (best case scenario and possibly a common fault as the computer is old) and they can quote you the price to repair motherboard (could be cheaper than buying a new one).

If you have a multimeter and some electrical knowledge (and are willing to invest a little time) I would recommend doing basic checks such as removing motherboard from laptop and try to power it on with nothing else connected, check for shorted power in cable, shorted main power rail, shorted mosfet, no 3.3v on power button, piece of metal fallen on the motherboard, water damage...

A ressource you can look at is this beginners guide by Louis Rossmann.

it's a bit basic and childish at times but it gets the point across. Other laptop repair resources are on the internet and can teach you basic tests.

Keep in mind the fault can be as simple as disconnected ribbon cable, small piece of corrosion, dead charger, etc... I resurrected a "totally dead motherboard for parts" ThinkPad l430 that just had a screw touching power button ribbon cable on the keyboard that prevented it from turning on.

Well after removing everything up until the RAM it magically started booting up. I switched the RAM with some other modules I had.

Power board cable got ripped during disassembly but now it's working at least
