I'm going to be modding an Alienware m17xr2 for fun to play around on spare time. What is the best gpu to mod into it that will work(modding is not an issue for me).I've been reading up on a bunch and i know there's some modded and unlocked bios for the r2.but what's the highest supported gnu seen by the bios. I haven't seen an answer. Any feedback is awesome

It would be better to write in a specific forum thread about Alienware 17 and m17x. There was an answer to your question in that thread. As far as I know, Maxwell with GM1xx chips fits, but the fans themselves do not start, they need to be controlled via hwinfo. 8970M also fits with the BIOS that Raidriar dropped in the thread about AW17, but the 8970M from Dell does not have automatic fan control either, and the Clevo card works quite well.

I got a p4000 to boot over HDMI for m17x R2, but the internal display didn't work with it. It might be possible via display modification (which I think I've seen someone on the german fourums do) or via internally routing the HDMI to an inverter board, and then using a compatible display with the inverter. Maxwell is definitely the most powerful practical option though.

Daily Drivers:

JANKTOP IV Mini-ITX Laptop - R5 2600X, 16gb DDR4 3000 Mhz, RX 5700 XT - (ONGOING)

Claymore V2 Cyberdeck, 6900HX, 680m iGPU, 16gb DDR5, 185 Wh Battery

14 R1 - 4710MQ @ 3.6 Ghz, hd 4600, 12gb DDR3L 1600 Mhz

Past Projects:

15 R3 - GTX 1060 6gb, i7 7700HQ, 16gb DDR4

17 R4 - RX 470 8gb i7 6700HQ, 16gb DDR4

M17x R4 - 3630QM, Quadro P4000, 16gb DDR3L 1600 Mhz

M17x R2 - i7 920XM @ 3.4 Ghz, GTX 770m 2gb, 16gb DDR3
