Sebastian Ramirez
Just some questions regarding upgrading my Alienware 18 https://www.x-vsion.com/product-category/mxms/ Is this website legit? If so, buying an RTX 3080 MXM, wouldn't it be to too much power for the motherboard, eventually damaging it? I just found this website and wanted to know since now I'm thinking to buy an RTX card instead of the GTX1070 Also, for an RTX3080 MXM, the installation process is same as installing a GTX1070 MXM into an Alienware 18 right? Finally, is the bottleneck going to be too severe? (I have an i7 4940MX) Many thanks for help!
Sebastian Ramirez
By the way, the website even has a RTX4090MXM!
Bottlenecker3Billion
This is legit. Bought a 4090 from here. Beware the difficulties, though. 1. the die position on the card is different than the 880M/m290x, so the cooler wont fit. You'll either need to DIY one or cutom order one. 2. In my first attempt to get the car running in my Alienware 17, the motherboard died. Im guessing the gpu caused a voltage spike at boot that the old VRM's couldn't handle. Tried again with a new motherboard and got an 8 beep video error because the board couldnt recognize the card. I verified it wasn't a fake by pluging it into my pc with a riser, where it was recognized. You'll need to modify the bios. 3. The 4080/4090 willl request more power than the system is able to dish out. You'll need to limit it through afterburne or similar programs, and even then ther is risk of frying the board under load. If you saw all of this and the prices or the cards themselves and you still want to do it, go for it. Have fun.
Bottlenecker3Billion
I will add this, though. 1. The bottleneck will be severe, yet not as severe as you expect. This cpu could likely handle up to a 2080 mobile at 1440p/4k assuming you use it as a nuc or do some sort of display modification. 2. There's a chance it'll work despite the lack of bios support. This happened when i put a RX 550 inside. Happy modding!
