Precision Mobile 5680 LCD swap?

Recommended Posts

Found a great deal on a Precision Mobile 5680 but it has a non touch screen. Could I purchase a touch version panel (or whole assembly) off of, say, eBay and just swap the panels out and have a working touch screen, assuming all other aspects of the panel remained the same?

I don't know the specifics of this system, so maybe someone else can chime in, but I think there is no reason that you couldn't replace the whole display assembly and have this work. The replacement display assembly should come with all of the necessary cables.

Dell does make it difficult to replace the panel alone now. Especially with a touch screen system (which would have glass covering it, presumably). I've replaced display panels in older systems, but in the Precision 7770 I found that it was held in place by adhesive (not screws), and when I had the panel replaced in that system under warranty, they just sent out a whole display assembly (the entire "top part" of the laptop).

That's kind of what I figured--just replace the whole assembly. Appreciate it.

Not that a touch will make it any better, but this thing has the worst screen tearing I have ever seen on a computer. Even watching YT videos is bad. I enabled "Smooth V-Sync" and it's better, but weird that I should have to enable that at all.
