Looking for a high-end gaming laptop with 9955HX3D, RTX 5080+ and no major drawbacks

Hi,

I’ve been trying to find a replacement for my PC for some time, but I’m having trouble finding the right laptop because every high-end model seems to have some kind of drawback. There are a few things that are particularly important to me:

• I want a display with low response times, as I mainly play fast-paced FPS games such as Apex Legends, Deadlock, CS, and Valorant.
• I want good thermals and, ideally, no CPU or GPU thermal throttling. It would also be preferable if the WASD area didn’t get excessively hot during gaming.
• I specifically want the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, as it seems to be significantly faster in gaming than the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX. 
• The laptop should have at least an RTX 5080.
   

I’ve already looked at several models:

• Lenovo Legion 7 Pro – On paper, this laptop looks great, but the CPU temperatures are honestly quite concerning. 100°C while gaming? And these weren’t even synthetic benchmarks such as Cinebench — it reached those temperatures while playing Cyberpunk 2077...
• ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 – This laptop initially looked very promising, but its display seems to suffer from some kind of strange flickering caused by a conflict between the backlight strobing and synchronization technology. You can see the effect in Linus’ video here: https://youtu.be/mpDanDwd7x0?t=168. Apparently, this can potentially cause headaches during longer gaming sessions.
• I also looked at laptops with external liquid cooling from Dream Machines and XMG. However, it seems that these models are available with displays that have relatively slow response times, making them less suitable for fast-paced games due to noticeable ghosting.

Are there any other laptops currently on the market that I might have overlooked that could meet these requirements?

The 9955HX3D is effectively a slightly lower powered desktop CPU so of course it's going to run hot. Most manufacturers account for this by providing software and/or BIOS options to limit the maximum TDP, temperature, or both. This^, same goes with any HX processor, these are technically desktop CPUs in a laptop there are going to run hot especially when they're running at 100w.

 

As a Lenovo Legion 7i pro owner, Its default performance mode sucks, It allows the CPU and GPU to runs to whatever wattage the game or app needs with its fan speeds running at only at 80-90% speeds not at maximum fan speeds even at high temps, I use its custom mode, you can control the CPU wattage to lower the temps without any performance difference and control the fan speeds, You can enable Silent Performance in the BIOS which changes its balance mode to silent performance mode which allows the GPU runs at its maximum wattage which the CPU only runs at 40w+ without any performance lost with lower temps and fan speeds, Great option for most people.

 

Other options to look at is the HP Omen 16 MAX, HP constantly has sales on it.

Sadly there are not many options that uses AMD HX3D CPUs. To answer your display question, OLED screens has the fastest response times by far and perfect for fast paced FPS games and more color accurate than IPS screens but they're glossy and reflective and not good in direct sunlight if you dont mind that, personally the pros outweighs the cons.

 

Try to find last year models if you want to save money as this year gaming laptops and any PC in general are very expensive thanks to AI-induced RAM apocalypse going on. Maybe they'll be good sales during black friday/holiday season but i doubt it
