Hello.

I can't overclock this CPU to 4GHz and beyond.

It's an unlocked 8 cores CPU for the X79 chipset.

My laptop has dual fan and good heatsink for that CPU. It has the PremaMod V5 bios.

I use the BIOS overclock ratio, it only shows 6 cores instead of 8.

So I overclock all cores to 42x, 43x and even 50x but I'm stuck at 39x for single thread and 38x for multi-thread.

The current limit is 165A and power limit is 200W. I use 2x330W PSU.

I tried to use Intel XTU 4.1 and 5.1 but they all throw a blue screen of death "iocbios2.sys".

I tried lower speed RAM and I still have the same issue.

Why can't I get 4.0GHz and above like everyone else? I know two people who got 4.3GHz and 4.5GHz... how?

Posted

I dropped the core count to 6.

I was able to reach 4.0GHz all cores and 4.1GHz single but crashes in TS bench. I raise voltage by +100mV but it still runs at 1.23V...

But when I want to go higher than 4GHz, bios doesn't allow and restarts.

Is the CPU a bad one? Never got any problems at 3.8GHz all cores

Edit: switching from 6 cores mode back to 8 cores, destroyed the CPU!

It does lots of error at 3.4GHZ!!! IN TS bench.

Wow at least I paid like 30€ back then but wow.

Guys, this CPU is dead yes? Or is the motherboard dead?

Hello news.

The Xeon E5-1680 v2 does 4.5GHz all cores in a ASUS RAMPAGE IV Extreme motherboard. So the CPU isn't dead.

I got myself an i7 4960X from that motherboard.

The CPU can overclock all cores to 4.0GHz and even 4.1GHz. but... The voltage is stuck at 1.281V max. Why? I raised by 100mV but I'm still stuck at 1.281V.

It does lots of errors in ThrottleStop but doesn't BSOD.

I get a BSOD when applying on Intel XTU

Did anyone overclock with Prema BIOS?

How do these people get the 1.47V reading? I'm stuck at max 1.281V!!!

I used Prema BIOS V5 from 1/03/2015 with 1.03.03 EC.

I just want to have 4.2GHz without any errors on TSBench.

Hello. Tested a Xeon E5-1660 v2 (just a 4960X with 100MHz more base clock).

Same issue... Voltage stuck at 1.231V on this one. All 3 CPUs I tested, have the same issue. I do use a 660W PSU combination so power and current aren't limiting me.

At 4.1GHz I crash on timespy CPU test at 00:08 and 00:10.

Any help please?

I just want to get higher clocks to remove the little bottleneck.

Can you help @Mr. Foxplease

Maybe …

There was an issue with the CPU power phases.

Try to get the boardview or schematic and compare the CPU power phase readings from it with those of the motherboard you currently have. This might help you identify the cause of the problem.

How to read the CPU power phases? This isn't a Z270/Z370 system.

I put the current and power limit all the way to the max. Only the voltage seems to be stuck.

1680 v2: 1.281V

1660 v2: 1.231V

4960X: 1.286V

All the six cores CPU work fine at 40x all core.

If that was a power phase issue, the system would be unstable instantly.

I have not owned that CPU before, but it should not be locked. I suspect it is the firmware and not the CPU.

Do you have an unlocked @Prema BIOS? It has been too long ago for me to remember clearly. It was about 10 or 11 years ago that I owned a P570, but if memory serves me correctly, Clevo had locked that thing down tighter than a gnat's rectum and you could do almost nothing with a stock BIOS. @Meaker might remember something as well.

Have you tried using ThrottleStop or XTU to see if the voltage registers are locked with both of those as well?

Edit: I see you do have a PremaMod BIOS.

Nothing is locked on both Xeon and i7 EX.

Everytime I hit apply, Windows throws a BSOD: iocbios2.sys.

Yes I have the PremaMod bios as stated. It seems the latest one

I also confirmed it with AI, LOL.

Is voltage locked on Intel E5-1660 v2 CPU?

No, the voltage is not locked on the Intel Xeon E5-1660 v2 processor. [1]
The Intel Xeon E5-1600 series (v1, v2, and v3) are famous among hardware enthusiasts because they feature an unlocked multiplier and fully adjustable core voltages. This makes them function almost identically to consumer Core i7 Extreme Edition processors (like the Core i7-4960X) from the same Ivy Bridge-E era. [1, 2, 3]
However, whether you can actually change the voltage depends heavily on your motherboard and software:
  • Motherboard Compatibility: To adjust the core voltage (and multiplier), you must use a consumer-grade X79 chipset motherboard with an unlocked BIOS (such as those from ASUS, Gigabyte, or ASRock). If you put this CPU in a standard server or workstation motherboard (like a Dell Precision or HP Z-series), the motherboard's BIOS will lock out all overclocking and voltage options.

A couple of random thoughts...

If you are applying the voltage change in Windoze using software, don't. Try in the BIOS only (if you have not already). If I remember correctly there was something like the BIOS and clocks had to be left on Auto in the BIOS if you were using Windoze software to make changes. This was too long ago for me to remember clearly. I think you had to decide one or the other. If you made setting in the BIOS using software would cause issue.

If you still have the firmware and have not tried flashing it again, give that a try. Maybe something got corrupted and a re-flash will fix it.

I am not sure how much more I can help just because so much time has past. I am lucky if I can remember what I had for dinner last night.

What's Windoze? Windows? I didn't understand. Yes I did most of the PL, voltage override and ratio on the unlocked BIOS.

I followed your guide on YouTube with the PremaMod BIOS settings but still no success... You had a 4930k

Hmm, I don't know. Something is off. Clevo had some verey strange things with their firmware and maybe the CPU is not properly recognized. Do you have a normal i7 CPU that you could install for testing to see if the problem is the same? I'm not sure what to suggest at this point. You might need help from @Prema if it is a firmware glitch.

Yeah, Windoze and Winduhz is how I refer to Micro$lop OSes now. The slurs are just my personal way of showing them as little respect as they deserve for their crappy products at this point.

Uh? I already stated multiple times I used an i7 4960X. Yes same issue. All 3 have the same issue. I can't increase the voltage, I need to increase in order to achieve 42x on all cores. I set 30, 40, 80 positive on the BIOS for the additional voltage (40 = +156mV)

I see people getting like 1.4V and above with PremaMod BIOS, it is the V5 too.

On the NBR forum, someone got the Xeon 1680 v2 at 4.5/4.6GHz all cores... Is he cheating??

My motherboard seems to be working, all RAM slots are working, the MXM slot (with RTX 4090M), all the USBs, even the charging IC work.

I never pushed the P570WM CPU like I did the NP9873,  I think I generally left it at 4.3Ghz on my 4930k. I was mostly adding VRMs to the 980M and giving them a 50% overclock in those days and focussing on the GPU side as that was where the main bottleneck back then was.

Have you checked the thermal pads cooling the VRMs?

Yes they are present, even the chipset has one. They look like the original one, not dry.
