51nb Closure

Wasn't sure if this was considered general or off-topic but the 51nb site as well as its forum have had their web addresses unreachable for quite a few weeks now - doesn't look like it'll be returning soon either.

They had a good amount of resources pertaining to notebooks and tech from Chinese users, so it is a shame to see it gone. I cannot see any news online regarding its closure, nor any messages on their social media pages. However, there is a thread here that explains that the domain has ClientHold status, meaning it is suspended: apparently a six-month suspension at best so perhaps it will return next year.

A poster on that thread also claims he may be able to cooperate with Lichuang regarding the matter (perhaps he is referring to modified ThinkPads)

That sucks... Isn't 51NB the website that had some guys make some modern motherboards for the older X series of thinkpads?

Yep, I'm not sure how this will affect the modified ThinkPads.

Right now, it seems like they are still operating - they shipped out the 10th gen X2100 orders in April.

What I've been told (by Jacky) is that the closure will be ~6 MOs until the big event later this year is done.

I don't think hosting the site outside of Mainland China helps. Anything that has lots of traffic will catch attention of the big brother. And there is little control over what those from HK and TW might post to get the site blocked by GFW. Not to mention the slow access to oversea sites that consumers of the cheap ISPs will enjoy, along with the DNS poisoning.

On the other hands, I'd be happy to host a copy/ CDN of this current site with the new (2nd handed) 16TB drives I purchased 😁
