2700X to 5800X3D upgrade! With a 10850K Cameo!

Good Evening everyone!

So to give some context in this upgrade going to have to rewind a bit. I had just finished doing another modification to the Alienware 17 R1, already had lost my sound due to BCLK tampering and now the screen started flickering when the GPU was screwed ever so slightly too tight. Frustrated and tired of tearing down the system I decided to make my way to MicroCenter.

It appears this was the perfect time to buy a new system as AMD 3xxx had dropped so pricing on the 2700x was dirt cheap, and in the deals they have for buying a motherboard together with the CPU and it worked out to about 160 USD for the 2700x. I did splurge a bit with the X570 ITX board with the idea of, I would eventually buy what ever the top of the line chip was at the end of the line for AM4. Waited a bit as the pricing really sucked in comparison to when I purchased the 2700x, recently the price dropped to 270. Hence, here we are. Oh and 10850K makes a cameo appearance as well!

Here are the specs for all systems involved.

2700X @ 4.0Ghz w/ PA 120 SE w/3x Nidec Servo 2150RPM

32GB DDR4 3200Mhz (XMP)

RTX 3090 +100/+1200/@119PL

2560x1440 VSYNC OFF

5800X3D @ 4.450Ghz w/ PA 120 SE w/3x Nidec Servo 2150RPM

32GB DDR4 3200Mhz (XMP)

RTX 3090 +100/+1200/@119PL

2560x1440 VSYNC OFF

10850K @ 5.0Ghz w/ NH-D15 w/Arctic 140mm P14

16GB DDR4 4400Mhz

RTX 3090 +100/+1200/@119PL

2560x1440 VSYNC OFF

Now on to some benchmarks!

Horizon: Zero Dawn had a rough launch, but I enjoyed playing it regardless as I resisted the temptation to buy a PS4 and was "rewarded" with a PC release. I think its in better shape now, might replay again soon.

image.thumb.png.60fc68092fdc2807b6beedc3c978669e.png

From the above data, the 2700X does "just fine" for Horizon: Zero Dawn. However, benchmark does point out that it does drop to 38 FPS which is pretty noticeable on a 144hz panel. It doesnt happen often, but once a pattern is noted, its hard to not notice it. The 5800X3D does have a healthy bump across min/avg/max readings as well as surpass the tuned 10850K as well. Its not enough to justify switching platforms but it is note worthy.

Returnal - This was a new title in my rotation, ended up enjoying it more than I suspected I would. A challenging game that punishes you failing and rewards you for not failing. There is no succeeding in this game.

image.thumb.png.f9ffe3936fbd5548abdedf012dee125c.png

This title doesnt seem to benefit much from either the 5800X3D or the 10850K. There are definitive gains, but not enough to jump to either platform. Appears to be mostly GPU bound title.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - I've enjoyed the reboot TR games, for some reason I stopped playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider but I might pick it up again. didnt know before hand but it appears that Tomb Raider is one of the titles that L3 cache appears to play a larger role in. As a result I took more time with this title. The next 4 graphs will be ROTTR at various settings noted in each graph.

image.thumb.png.170f8bd8bc8b2756888dcf29e7c1ec77.png

ROTTR goes through 3 areas to capture FPS data. I abbreviated each run on the charts to simplify how its presented. STD shorthand for Standard, and AA shorthand for Anti-Aliasing.

-MP = Mountain Peak

-S = Syria

-GV = Geothermal Valley

and continuing...

image.thumb.png.411df0b62b1a0c516d9342051907dc20.png

image.thumb.png.681fd6bc4b81d736f07d0ef2cbafa62c.png

image.thumb.png.6a556710caebe19bdada73a80799e73d.png

Not sure why the 2700x seemed to be just taking a dirt nap under DX12 with lighter settings. The lows were abysmal, perhaps it has to do with still loading the run. That being said when you crank up the settings across the board a pattern more or less emerges. The demands on the hardware increase with each run save for the last graph.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Average FPS

Im not quite sure how to extrapolate all the data from SOTTR benchmarks so I just went with the averages. I still have the screenshots so if people let me know I can edit them re-submit. Also I followed the same presets as before, in this order.

PS1 - DX11 | Max Settings | No AA | Low hair

PS2 - DX11 | Max Settings | Max AA | Max hair

PS3 - DX12 | Max Settings | No AA | Low hair

PS4 - DX12 | Max Settings | Max AA | Max hair

Also I didnt grab the full sweep of data for the 10850K. I'll add that in later if people want. EDIT: Went back and re-ran the benchmarks to finish this chart. Citations will be provided shortly.

image.thumb.png.d9bc518e532661ac3c520b5a1a27ef07.png

Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Ray Tracing Enabled

image.png.1056d68a82eb8d8932431eddd4fdca60.png

Dont let this bar chart paint an incorrect impression of RT performance, the FPS range between all systems is 5 FPS. Wanted to see if there would be much impact on performance between the CPU's with RT On. There is a difference, but within this range it would be hard to make an argument for any of the processors.

Tomb Raider

image.thumb.png.df5ff3cc1a25d7531475807f1c81b146.png

image.thumb.png.227c7687d391f1fb592bf2cb9614095f.png

Tomb Raider (2013) by today's standards is quite dated. That being said I like to play it from time to time. One thing I usually derive from this game is why I dont care for new graphics features that often, above you can see the performance penalty of adding TressFX and AA. No setting should cost you 200 FPS. Performance is in-line from what you would expect however this title seems to favor the brute force method of the 10850K over the 5800X3D, albeit, not by much.

image.thumb.png.8a29d918b0693c6a3fe49c48983f42ff.png

Shadow of War is one of those titles that somehow punched above its weight class. While some elements of the story were just ridiculous, the gameplay was quite enjoyable. This title does seem to favor the 5800X3D, particularly the minimum FPS. Perhaps the bad minimums for the 2700x and 10850K are a result of the start of the benchmark as for the short while that I did play I didnt see choppy FPS. It is what it is though.

The 5800X3D is an overall improvement over the 2700x, but if you are using the 10850K with some decent ram, there really isnt any justifiable reason to switch platforms. If you are sitting on an older AM4 motherboard with standard RAM the 5800X3D is very tempting in comparison to the 2700x.

Im getting tired, ill add more as I gather it together.

If anything is amiss I can easily rerun benchmarks for the 5800x3D and 10850k. If 2700x benches are needed that will probably wait until I have a bundle of tasks I can do as I will have ti swap the cpu

Removed and updated STTOR benchmarks as the 10850K submissions had incorrect Graphical settings. Benches re-ran and integrated

Tomb Raider and Middle Earth: Shadow of War have been added to the review.

Going to try and get a RT benchmark comparison next, for some reason the game kept crashing on the 5800X3D with RT enabled.

I know it's not right to make a request. But you wouldn't happen to have age of empires in your arsenal would you. It's a fairly popular game that is well optimized and usually cpu bottlenecks even at 1440p/4k

Yep!

@ryan

I ran the benchmark for Age of Empires II and when I look to the other benchmark results it appears to be more focused on whether or not the system would bode well enough for multiplayer, not something to push the individual machine.

The result on the 5800X3D/RTX3090 was 1286 Which only means its good enough for MP lol

It doesnt help that the main designation for the mobile variants are just H/HX/X of mostly the same thing. The nomenclature of both vendors has been a bit of a wash lately.

are you planning on getting a 14th gen intel cpu. it will be interesting to see how the mobile i7 compares to a 11800h and how the 14900ks compares to the common 5800x3d in gaming. not many games require a beefy cpu but that is set to change with new games like forza motorsport.

No, not at all.

yeah I don't see any point unless your a benchmarker, I don't know of many applications for that kind of power but i'd imagine for photo editing which no one i know does would be of benefit. I think what you have should serve you well for half a decade, i have a omen laptop that is still kicking at 1080p and 1440p 2 years later and I can see it lasting 5 more years at 1080p. your not one to upgrade every itteration, and thats probably a good thing

Aside from that, even if you are a benching fanatic, the cost of things is so far out of scope with the value of the products and the benefits of owning the product that the idea of upgrading to something newer is becoming a very foolish and a frivolous endeavor. Computers, and the parts used to build them, have never been an "investment" but they've not been this grossly overpriced unless you go back like 35 years ago, to a time when personal computers were an uncommon novelty item. I can't identify anything other than SSDs that represent good value from a cost/benefit perspective. It is even worse if you live in a country like @Papusan with a government that seeks to financially harm its citizens with Satanic taxation practices.

Honestly Im saving up for a desktop for casual gaming, but I have my doubts. 3k to play games at high 4k/60 seems like alot when a console can do the same for 700. most if not all good games are console ports these days and revolutionary games like half life 2 and crysis are extinct. they just don't exist unless you are talking about a mediocre indie game. I get why people upgrade just  to have the bleeding edge, its satisfying and enjoyable getting higher scores and testing out games only to find games you previously could not play now play well. It is strange that a 4080 laptop is cheaper than a 4070 desktop alot of times, as it includes often times a per key rgb keyboard/1440p monitor 165-240h/ and a trackpad. even though it's nicer buying a dedicated keyboard and a oled 4k monitor ect. it costs alot more, like look at @jaybee83 I have no idea what he spent but id imagine it cost north of 5k and in canada thats like 40 cool million. honestly I just don't know. I might just get a top tier laptop in 2025 because it's likely to be cheaper, but im tired of this soldiered crap. time will tell

Not a single synthetic benchmark was run for this thread as its not the intended purpose. This system is for my DD stuff, gaming, web browsing etc and benching is doing on the 10850K system.

Console will give a gaming experience but its essentially a terminal within a walled garden. The moment you decide you want to play Metroid Prime you have to repurchase it if you have the right console and/or buy the right console, rebuy it there. The other option is you could just spin up your copy on your PC and play with a better framerate and higher visual fidelity heck in some cases there are texture packs too.

Lately I have been playing a bit of Assetto Corsa and you can mod that game to a higher degree than probably skyrim. You play on keyboard and mouse? odd but go ahead. All you have is a controller? There are scripts for that to make it more enjoyable. Oh you have a wheel, pedals and shifter? go ahead! Oh you want to add feedback into your steering rack and pedals? go for it! Oh you have a full roll cage and nvidia surround? no problem! You want to drive a car that doesnt exist in the game? download and done.

I just comes down to what you can imagine doing on said system. Consoles are great for picking up a controller and playing a game, PC's are great for people that like to the same thing, with potential to dare for more.

Yeah I agree, this is why Im a dying breed. I prefer GTA V on PC because of the mods. and as for like 100 AAA games most are modable, and sometimes it can be a literal game changer. Heck I remember realifesis mod for crysis, it made what was at the time a 3 year old game look like it was from 10 years in the future. also I dabble in VR so PC is the only option. but when it comes to just vanilla gaming consoles are hard to beat, for example i'm waiting on forza motorsport and early performance metrics are in and it looks like with my 3060 ill have to game at 4k/60 all low. xbox series x does medium/high and all for 550 bucks vs 2000
