  1. No, and as Captain America said, I don't think I will. why? because W10 just works, and I barely tolerate how intrusive Microsoft is with W10, that's why I used Sledgehammer for several months to stop Windows Update from shoveling updates down my throat. In the end I gave up and allowed the updates to come (mainly to let HAGS work, and it turned out that HAGS sucks), but still it bothers me that Windows feels more like a dumb terminal connected to a mainframe that tells you what you can and cannot have/do. I imagine that this will get worse with each edition of Windows.
  2. Starting this topic to discuss their effectiveness and or review laptop cooling bases/blowers/extractors/etc. Some claim that these products are snake oil, others swear that these devices shaved off a couple of degrees, while others acknowledge that they might help a little but mostly you get the false impression of lower temps because the fans blow directly over the temperature sensors on your laptop mobo. what do you think, do they work? I'll start with the one I've been using since 2019 Coolermaster Ergostand III To be completely honest I noticed that it helps lower the max temps on my Omen 15 2019 by around 2-4 degrees, but still under certain conditions, like playing Cyberbug 2077 which squeezes as much CPU and GPU power, there was no real difference between having it on or off. The laptop would melt anyway. The good: The front plate can be removed, that allows to easily clean any dust that gets in the mesh The mesh itself catches quite a lot of dust, the bigger dust bunnies, the only thing that passes through is that kind of really fine dust that sticks like a coating - just yesterday was cleaning the fans of my laptop and noticed only this kind of sticky grime and nothing else clogging the fans or exhausts The 6 positions allow me to have the screen of my laptop comfortably in front of my eyes The bad: The little PCB that controls the fan speed died after a year and a half of use, first the white LED started flickering, then the speed knob, in the end I had to bypass it all and connect the cooler directly (it has a dedicated 5v USB port for the fan, besides the USB hub for data and energy) to an external charger.
  3. May I pull the nostalgia card?, If I may: Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Wolfenstein 3D, Day of the tentacle, Star Wars Rebellion, Prehistorik 2, Lemmings, Jill of the Jungle. I know that is not 1 game of all time, but those games were my first and still to this day dearly beloved. I blame my dad. oh and Quake 1, I sat beside him while he played Q1 because that was really too much for me.. the Shambler! the Vore! literally stuff of nightmares.
  4. Mafia DE is great! Mafia 2 is also good, but my favorite is Mafia 3 even with all the bugs, Ioved New Bordaeux as fictional city. I have on standby Dragon Age Inquisition, it's... not good, cannot recommend it to someone else in good conscience. it's a chore and a grindfest even with QOL mods. I think the last time I played it was a week ago and I really don't feel like continuing after 45+ hours in.
  5. I feel that there's a subforum missing: News regarding the big companies, Nvidia, AMD, ARM, etc, or the latest in drivers/new tech/announced tech by those that applies to both desktop and lappy. I can't remember exactly which subforum (the structure I mean) was before. I miss so much @Papusan letting us know the latest in 'how can we mess it up even further while keep milking their pockets dry' or 'here, have an update, new is better isn't it?' and also @Mr. Fox giving his invaluable input regarding those topics 😄 oh I got another one! how about a subforum about retro hardware, my suggestion stems from that I follow LGR on youtube which covers laptops, desktop hardware, software, handheld devices, oddware, etc. maybe there's some retro enthusiast here with a collection of oddities of ancient hardware/software that wants to share 😄
  6. Damn @cucubits everything there looks amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few weeks ago I tried making some Spaghetti Carbonara, but with smoked sausage instead of smoked pork cheek (don't know the name Italian name, sorry) my parents loved it and asked for more 😄 I myself was very proud of it, it is such a simple recipe but really really tasty
  7. My last purchase was a DeWalt hammer drill (made in china *cough cough*), sadly the chuck was wobbly and had to return it after a week of use 😞 I was so damn proud of it, it was cool as heck. I think now I will go with a Milwaukee impact driver 🙂
  8. Motorola Moto G8 plus 😄 3 years with it and no problems so far. well to be honest I'm more a computer guy than a smartphone one, so for me this phone just gets things done.
  9. 2 days ago, The boat that rocked (AKA Pirate radio), yesterday: Almost Famous, today I think I will watch High Fidelity. I'm on a 70s rock phase right now, well not really a phase per se, I love Rock and Metal :D, but these last few years I've been finding myself just loving old Rock and Roll and the vibes from those times. man that period had soul.
  10. I will skip the part about removing the bottom cover, but still I suggest using a guitar pick to dislodge the little clamps around the chassis. 1) Disconnect the battery cable and main power cable (under main power there's a fan screw top right position in green) 2) Disconnect the WiFi antennas so you can reach the fan screw underneath 3) Disconnect both fans, pull a little from each side of the connection, be gentle!!! 4) Unscrew the 4 fan screws (in green circles) 5) Unscrew the 6 heatsink screws (in purple circles), those are numbered for the reverse procedure, keep that in mind (some may say that it doesn't matter) 6) Start pulling upwards and GENTLY towards you (lower than 45 degrees, start from a low angle and work from there) from the GPU part of the heatsink. at the same time hold with your other hand from the right fan. the whole unit including fans will come out together. I've seen other heatsinks that as soon as you pull it the fans fall down like a sack of potatoes, not in this case. 7) remove factory/old paste as usual, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, paper towel, microfiber cloth. 😎 Apply the new thermal paste. The GPU die is big as heck, this model has an RTX 2070, so I suggest using the X pattern with dots in each quadrant. The CPU, in this case I7-9750h, compared to the GPU is small so I suggest a simple line from side to side of the die. 9) Take this chance to blow any dust bunnies where the fans rest: The chassis in this model has a sort of deposit at the exhausts where the fans spit the crap that it collects. 10) to put back the heatsink start by placing the upper part (lower inclination than 45 degrees) of it where it sits at the exhausts and again GENTLY let it descend in its proper position, if you initially inserted the heatsink properly (the angle I mean), it will feel that it sits without resistance. 11) Screw back the 6 (purple circles) heatsink screws in the order that reads on the engraving, a few turns each screw in order. do not overtighten, it has to be firm but not to the point where you are exerting yourself, this is not an engine nor a carpentry project. 12) feel free to put back everything together, fan screws first, then cables, battery last, as always - you don't want to fry your mobo. Sadly I don't have pictures with the naked mobo because I was more concerned of doing this right on first try, but I hope this helps as reference. yes it worked first try, it's been 2 years since I repasted with Thermalright TFX and no problems so far. Also don't forget to undervolt your CPU (where is Unclewebb 😞 😞 😞 ???? ) Suggested tools: latex gloves, cotton swabs, paper towel, tweezers with ceramic tips, guitar picks, in general use SOFT tools, wood, plastic, etc, not metallic ones. oh and if you can ground yourself with those wrist thingies. Cheers. Ps: English is not my native language, so excuse any grammar mistakes or weird expressions.
  11. I'm sorry but this is just hilarious. but! it might be of relevance to this forum, is there some sort of bot/spam protection in place here? I'm not that versed in this topic so I humbly ask. I don't want to be chased by horny bots in here, but clearly over there are having a good time.
  12. hi, can you make more visible the number of total registered users, new users and related types of metrics to the bottom/footing of the home or even better to every page? I know that there's somewhere a section to look that up, but it will help to make a good first impression (looking at competing forums that info is right at the bottom) to newcomers 😄
  13. I'm by no means a long standing user of NBR (started to browse the forums around 4 years ago, and also techpowerup), but I saw through the - few - years, several users that had many years of "service" and reputation there, and to be precise @Reciever is one of those that always had something to add when I browsed every subforum of my interest. And so, it was the obvious choice to pick when I read that this forum was the fallback in case of emergencies. With that said, and to be bluntly honest, the Admins at NBR should take a stand against the forum created by the very same guy that proposed to sell the NBR forum database on Ebay. I Know that they must have a lot on their plate right now, but that guy some john-who-knows-where-he-came-from is effectively dividing and damaging the surviving NBR community.
