Yes, all this was during CB23. I’ll look into AVX. Max Fans were on. I started switching to max fans during a bench after @electrosoft mentioned it. I will be opening up the cpu again (possibly run it bare die with some polyimide tape to protect the edges) may reapply a liquid metal… anyway.

Haven had much time to play with the X170 lately, but here’s an update. Did a CB23 and scored 15388 TS settings: -96mv Core, -85 Cache PL1 152 PL2 200 TAO 126 Ring down bin Disabled Windows power settings at 100%, performance mode, all that was done long time ago. Still seeing clock speed slowly throttling down. It starts at 85c/4.9Ghz for the first 2 minutes, then temps start to climb to 94c while clock start to drop off. After about 6 minutes temps are 92c and clocks are down to 4.3Ghz. Im sure I’m doing something wrong or this CPU is just a Hot mess. I even reapplied the rest of my liquid metal to the CPU/heatsink, no change.

Yeah, I wish I had a more scientific approach, but now that I’m on my to actual seeing gains, it’s too far into upgrades within properly recorded data. But down the line if I’m really curious, I still have my old radiator, I could test things out with original settings, but we’ll see.

TAU is currently at 56, I’ll adjust it.

In one screenshot it’s at the beginning of a render with a spike temp of 95c, with the cpu fan full blast it’s pretty steady at 86c @150w, and that’s with ~96 undervolt. PL1 is at 150w and PL2 is at 240w

@electrosoft @solidus1983 I finally got around to doing a CB23, but decided to just run it with TS, here's some screenshots:

Absolutely. And that’s the trap I fell into thinking I would get the hardware of my choice for configuring and call it good. But that’s certainly not the end all as I’ve learned. Im glad I purchased it, and I certainly feel special lol, but now I’m just going against that mediocrity mindset (as I’ve so been inspired). It’s disgusting that so many things now days are manufactured (enforced) so cheaply with expectation of wide embrace. Commercial purposed machinery aren’t nearly as crippled as consumer machinery.

RockitCool. I watched @Mr. Fox video on delid the 10900k. But the video above is good too. I’m optimistic about @Prema or anything to unhide or unlock the Bios. I just won’t be the testing settings myself cause I’m still novice and it basically playing with fire. It’s just a matter of time before a good bios solution will surface for this DTR, I’ve gotten so much support already from NBR members, and I won’t even consider other machines unless it’s a desktop, strictly due to the performance/filler, this really does seem like the last real DTR, but I think it will be worth the wait on bios support. Honestly I believe this hints to why NBR shut down the community section of the site. I don’t think manufactures really appreciate people voiding warranties for the sake of benchmarks, games, hardware, etc… but that certainly didn’t stop me lol I had buyers remorse at first, but long term, I’m keeping it and just going to keep tinker as I learn and as new info comes my way. Im not in a position to help anyone at this point in my experience, but as soon as I can help I will.

I don’t know, but near that post was a few replies about getting the softest possible. The compression is what matters most, from what I’ve heard. Speaking of which I still need to take a closer look at mine.

I still haven’t had much time to play with it. Will definitely update as soon as I get a chance.

@electrosoft Thank you! I have an XMG Bios now lol, still working through Throttlestop stuff to see if I can optimize it more, I’ll post pics of TS or HWinfo when I get around to another CB23. did one last night but just too late to doc anything

@solidus1983 I’ll be working on it tonight, I’ll give an update as soon as I’m finished with it.

@solidus1983 Awesome! Thank you! I’ve been doing some reading up on how to flash through EFI shell, so once you send that I’m sure it will clarify some of the process for me. I’m using 2 sticks of ram currently.

@solidus1983 BIOS 1.07.02, EC 1.07.05 I have no problem using XMGs BIOS. It’s a little intimidating, but heck, it’s all been intimidating and warranty is way out the window by now anyway. @electrosoft I bought it as a barebones through a very small company in Chino Hills California, not a brand, configured through their website, it was the cheapest I could find. Then I did some reading and found out about Prema @Mr. Fox Dsanke, and decided to take this journey seriously. Now I’m determined to get this thing cleaned up and I’m will to do some hard and painful work to figure it out. Thank you both for your questions, as that alone has been pointing out where to poke around. If you don’t mind, how exactly do I flash the XMG BIOS? 😅

@electrosoft @solidus1983 Thank you both for pointing out entertaining mode! I switched it to performance mode and ran a Time Spy Extreme. It shut down just after the demo. So I pulled TS and lowered the volt from ~108 to ~112 and ran CB23 (forgot to re-download HWinfo) Haven’t had a chance to get the screenshots yet, will post soon, but got 15015 on CB23, whereas on entertainment mode I was getting 14400 and below. Temps were 98 and throttling between Game and Performance modes in TS Max watts in TS were around 230W. I was looking through the TS guides and was a little confused, I’m really wanting to push this thing (just for fun) but this throttling and heat control stuff is crazy, and my lack of experience with computers doesn’t help Does it still seem like a have a fantastic chip? 🤔
-
@electrosoft here’s some pics of HWinfo, first run of CB23 had a BSOD, I had my volts at -112, took it to -109 and it stabilized. Also, I can’t tell how the GPU is doing, I’d like to make sure the thermal pads are in good shape, I followed @dsanke thermal pad guide and they seem to have good compression.
-
@electrosoft as soon as I get the time pull up HWinfo and do a CB23 and update results. I think the delta is about 10c, but with TS it’s over 15c easy. @solidus1983 I guess it’s a little unfair for the heatsink cause I did thermalright silver king LM on die, IHS, and topped the GPU with LM as well. (water version, but running it dry for now) Thank you for the Rep (?) , yes, I polished them up as much as I could When all I had was YouTube and solidworks running, based on my own recollection, CPU temps were around 66-70, but now it idles around 45-50 with multiple windows open and Solidworks running. I should mention that’s also with about -108mv to cores and cache in TS. (Still learning TS…) if I seem ignorant, feel free to offer some corrective criticism. I’ll post pics of HWinfo and CB23, and maybe TimeSpy (Extreme??) when I get a chance.

My barebones of this is great, but comes with a headache. I would like to take advantage of what it has to offer but, unfortunately for me, found out too late about Prema and his BIOS enhancements. However, so far, from what I could figure with Throttlestop and a new radiator, the thermals are better, just hate being stuck with no XMP and thermothrottling still wanting to occur. Don’t know enough to find any good work around. If anyone knows how to crack into to BIOS and open it up for more potential, please help me with a walk through, I’ll buy you a beer! All in all, I prefer this thing over almost anything else, it’s mobile enough, and handles games and Solidworks without a problem.
