Was browsing newspapers + streaming some music, the main use for this old laptop, then suddenly out of the blue, blue screen ! Never ever happened before, the Dell E7440 with it's original w8.1 install has been in daily use for only 10,5 years. Totally inacceptable to endure such a problem so soon after purchase and with such a modern OS!
Initially looked like some windows corruption, it rebooted into some kind of recovery, and asked for the full bitlocker key (which I could dig up from somewhere from some backup) but I chose to power down and try a restart. Nothing, no display, no bios access, not even beeps or blinking lights. The end I believed, motherboard failure.
Anyway, opened up just to have a last view of it's inside, save whatever component etc, then thought maybe do the very basic last chance thing: had a look for anything obvious, removed one memory board, removed \ reseated other memory and drives.
Pushed the on button. Miracle occured 27.07.2025 at 02:14:29: out of coma like nothing ever happened. Corrupt ram ? Bad connection ram or drive ? Or can just as well be the sign of some lingering, future serious fault. Needless to say, external hd + macrium reflect immediately in action.
Still not the end ! Hoping my trusted old w8.1 + 7440 friend will do service for a while longer.
