^^^ Best \ most innovative phones not coming to North America, stuck with bygone and antique tech from Apple\Samsung\Motorola lol Phoneheads do import from China \ Hong Kong, 'Global' OS, some take the chance with China OS. Am supposing they can supply the camera kit and lens stuff. Need to check 5G bands available, and don't expect timely updates. Then comes the question about lost in the post, or eventual warranty claims, can't just walk into the local service shop. Personally would not risk it for such expensive devices.

Defender found this 'Trojan' today. Ran Eset Online Scanner, reported all clear. Checked it, false positive. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/microsoft-defender-wrongly-flags-digicert-certs-as-trojan-win32-cerdigentadha/

Got a pair of these after reading some review. https://www.qacoustics.com/products/5020-bookshelf-speaker Black friday sale some years ago, way lower price than listed now. + a 10" 100W Sony sub. Pioneer "2x more than enough" amp. An old Creative usb to spdif box (instead of bluetooth). Sounds great. At my old cabin in the woods: https://www.geniusnet.com/en/products/view/sp_hf1250b_ii Laptop jack out only. Still working after 10 years, nice sound for the small size\price.

Still trusting Win Defender, with it's daily updates (even on my still-alive 8.1 laptops). Now and then running Eset Online Scanner (free use), fetching fresh definitions at each run, finding it very practical as a 'second opinion'.

lol "We just hope that the business customers Microsoft’s going after \ aren’t reading the full Copilot terms of use" Copilot is for entertainment purposes only. It can make mistakes, and it may not work as intended. Don’t rely on Copilot for important advice. Use Copilot at your own risk. https://www.androidauthority.com/copilot-entertainment-only-3654882/

Good (great) 14" (Dell, or maybe other) ?
6730b replied to 6730b's topic in What Laptop Should I Buy?
^^^ Ended up with 2x Thinkpads. Some price offers I could not refuse speeded up the decision. E14 G5 lower specs (amd 3, matte 45% display, 16gb (8 soldered), xtra nvme slot), P14s G5 higher specs (amd 7, matte 400n 100% srgb, 16gb + empty slot). Satisfied with both so far, a few months use. None of them got the perceived (and proved during years of use here) case\construction solidity\quality of the Dells, especially the Precision. But feels good handling the Thinkpads. Size and low weight is great, silent under normal use, feels overall speedy and responsive, ok access to insides (after done it 1st time...), good battery times, fine keyboard. ...and got those red nipples :O) -

What phone are you daily driving currently?
6730b replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
Got a new toy (sh, great price drops for 'old' tech), Xiaomi 14 Ultra with the Photography kit add-on. Not any daily driver yet, got to learn more about xiaomi's os, but used for photography, damn impressive. As good as this review says https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_14_ultra-review-2683.php That Photography kit box, thought it was just a gimmick, but provides truly useful camera controls (+ some xtra battery inside). -
Now the end is really near. Got 2 old laptops still running perfect with 8.1, one 11 years, the other 12 years, both with their original 8.1 install. Pretty great, both hard- and software. But things start to break in contact with the real world (like it's owner? lol). Old Vivaldi and Firefox 'esr' got more and more troubles with current websites, symptoms like my Xiaomi Ultra phone usb not recognized (unknown device, nothing in file manager), etc. One impressive thing from MS (it's possible!), Defender still getting daily updates. So already bought replacements, 2x recent Thinpads, starting to set them up (like installing the good old Windows Photo Viewer, Open Shell etc lol) and migrating content. 8.1, been a very, very good friend, done so much together, will be sad to say goodbye.

Best way to remove sticky rubber coating from surfaces?
6730b replied to Will's topic in General Discussion
lol, my very old Dell E7440 had coating that disintegrated. Looked and felt horrible > time to throw the laptop in the bin :O) But scratched it away with a piece of plastic (softer than the main plastic frame under the coating). Long ago, maybe ? also used some elctronic contact cleaner, which did not attack anything other than the coating. Then polished with fine 800 (or was it 400) sandpaper. Was a job over time, nice finish in the end.- 4 replies
