  1. Thanks for the info! I will order some and report back as to whether I can get it to boot on an M6500/M6400
  2. I have a quick question about mSATA compatability: - What slot would it be in? the WWAN slot below the left fan? Would it be possible to also put one in the 1/2 height slot to the right of the Wifi card? - And will SSDs with chips in both sides (double sided) work, or will there be clearance issues? - Will the answers to the above questions be the same for the M6400/M6500 as well? I saw someone say that the mSATA slot was less stable than the regular SATA slot, so I would like to hear experiences from others Many thanks in advance
  3. When I had a buzzing fan with my 7760, they sent over an entire heatsink assembly (including fans). You can request a "parts only order" where you can install the parts yourself. It's a lot more convenient than having to schedule a time with a technician. The heatsink replacement is very straightforward. The only screws that have to be removed are the battery screws -- everything else is captive.
  4. A couple questions regarding GPUs: Does the RTX 3080 variant use a different heatsink than the A4000? I doubt that's the case as the screw placements seem to be in the same location on both cards, but an eBay seller is insisting otherwise. Can the Precision 7560 GPU fit in the 7760? The 7560 card seems to physically fit in my 7760 chassis, though I would assume it will have its power capped at 90W (I didn't reassemble my 7760 with the 7560 GPU in fear of breaking something). Thanks!
  5. No dice with resetting NVRAM 😔 I will try to haggle for a replacement system since I want peace of mind in case there is anything else faulty with my system. Hopefully I can get a 7780 as the GPU seems to be a significant upgrade. Needing to use the i7-1265U in my Latitude 9430 2-in-1 as my only main laptop is painful 🥲 Edit: They said that they can only provide a replacement unit if there are 3 service requests within the same month. I got a replacement motherboard ordered and I managed to get it as a parts only order so that I can install it myself. I'm not sure how the Windows license will work since a new motherboard counts as a new device which I don't think will activate with the OEM key.
  6. I wholeheartedly agree that the M4800 is the last of its kind. It has been 2 years since I have last used an M4800, and I'm itching to get my hands on one again, especially since my 7760 is having some issues... Anyway, I digress. The 7x80 systems have the same chassis as the 7x70 chassis, so the difference between the thin/performance 7680 chassis will be the same difference as with the 7670. The RTX 3500 and up will give you the performance chassis.
  7. I know this is a bit off topic, but I'm posting here since it's urgent. My 7760 is refusing to turn on. When I press the power button, the keyboard backlight and battery status indicator turn on for about 0.5 seconds and then turn back off again. There is no error code or repeated flashing. I have tried draining the residual power from the motherboard (removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds), but it was to no avail. What else should I try before I contact support? And would this be big enough of an issue to negotiate a replacement to the 7780? I have 5 years of ProSupport+, so I'm well within the warranty window. Some more info: -the battery indicator doesn't stay on when plugged in -I haven't done any BIOS updates in over a year and haven't done any Windows updates in over a month (disabled automatic updates), so it's almost certainly not caused by updates
  8. Hi all! I feel like having a forum section dedicated to retro/older stuff (visible on the main page) would be helpful as there is a vast wealth of knowledge in this forum, and I would assume that there are many users here who are knowledgeable about older computers. Often times, older computers can be a PITA due to driver issues, etc. It would also be cool to have a place to post about restoration projects, since the problems along the way would be helpful to others. Lmk if anyone else is interested in such a topic!
  9. The 7x60 generation of Precisions are quite good, albeit flimsy compared to the Mx700/Mx800 series. Thinking about it makes me miss my M4800 so much. Hopefully I will have enough time this summer to buy one used and max it out, though unfortunately I might be out of state the whole summer for research internships 😟
  10. Realistically, in 99% of laptops, the only differentiating factor will be CUDA cores and clocks rather than wattage. Pushing a 4050 mobile at 115W definitely won't put it at a good place in the performance vs power curve (my Quadro A4000 mobile/RTX 3070 mobile @ 115W is just about in the sweet spot), though it's not unreasonable as the per core power draw is somewhat on par with the desktop variants. Letting the 4070 go down to 35W TGP is criminal considering the memory power draw will be a significant portion of that. Maybe they are trying to sort of "cheat" their way for more efficiency in the ultra low power segment by using super low power/core? For context, to get my Quadro A4000 mobile (same as 3070 mobile) down to 60W power draw, my core clock speeds need to be at 215 MHz, which likely means that to hit that 35W TGP, the memory will be significantly downclocked.
  11. Oh wow those drivers were taken down very soon... thankfully it seems that Dell keeps their Latitude drivers on their website for a while
  12. 🤔🤔 And especially with the lack of upgradability/serviceability. The removal of the easily replaceable keyboard on the new Precision 7000s is a pretty big deal breaker for me. While I suppose the easily removable keyboard on the previous generations were to accommodate for the SODIMMs under the keyboard, having to do a complete teardown just to replace the keyboard is incredibly frustrating. Yep, and since the old forum was shut down with such little notice, I suspect that many old users still don't know about this forum.
  13. Wow I really am out of touch with these vain new trends... not a single one of my 11 laptops has a soldered Wifi card. I didn't even think about the fact that Wifi cards can even be soldered. What a shame considering that Intel has deleted drivers for older Wifi cards from their websites (they say it's for "security", but downloading drivers from a sketchy website is far riskier). The Centrino N6200 in my Latitude E6410, which I prefer to travel with over my XPS 15 7590, recently started acting up in Windows 10, and I had to download a driver from a sketchy site since Dell's latest driver doesn't install on Windows 10. Just watch as tons of laptops go to waste in 8 years because someone can't find a basic wifi driver for their computer. Deleting drivers is a pretty a**hole move in itself, but doing so when the components are soldered is an even bigger a**hole move.
  14. There is a lot of information on the archive, but I do wish that there was more active discussion since I'm in the process of upgrading and restoring many laptops in my collection... I suppose people here are more interested in newer stuff, but I find myself enjoying older laptops more since I can't afford to max out and fully rebuild frames and chassis on new laptops 😂
  15. It has been a while since I was last active, but whenever I have a problem, I always check here first. In a perfect world, there would only be one forum to search in, but nothing is perfect... My only wish would be more discussion and support for older computers.
