This CPU is also sufficient for games.  There, you need more GPU power, the Processor is not working very well.

 

100% enough for 3080 16GB MXM card.

If you have enough gaming performance with the current CPU then leave it as is. No reason to spend more money on something that is relatively costly and could also go wrong👍

The connectors parts are the same physically with regard to the case openings required as the SM-G also has two connectors in the same form factor, namely one USB-C that also doubles as a display port and one that is just a regular USB-C connector. Still there is obviously a risk that something will not work somewhere, maybe best to let the guys look over it who repaired your SM-G. 

You can check out the reviews at notebookcheck, they should have a picture from all three sides of the laptop.

Presonally I would not do it as I prefer to have 10 cores and 4 SSDs which is not possible with the SM-G chassis so I would check out if a 10 Core Xeon is working with the mainboard.

OK, just checked my KM-G and SM-G and the connectors line up just fine, just have to remember that the KM-G has two Thunderbolt on the side vs one on the back for the SM-G 🙂

As for the mounting positions for the board itself there are plenty of pictures online so you will not have a difficult time finding them.

Not sure if that upgrade is possible, best to check all connectors and how the main board is mounted.

I have seen that board, pricing is pretty good!

I would not be surprised about that.

If it is "only" an issue with K-Processors then you could look into getting one of the fast Xeons that go up to over 5 Ghz, like the W-1290P that can be had for not so much money and goes up to I think 4.8GHz all cores and 5.3 single core.

I have no idea though if it is supported, maybe check with @Prema.

Or maybe it is power and you cannot use 125W CPUs any more. Then you could check out a 10900F with 5.2/4.6 single and all core and 65W. It is quite a bit more costly though than the 125W 1290P. In any case I would try to work around the CPU issue instead of getting a new motherboard, too much money and work if you can get enough performance out of another CPU.

No point of turning the X170 into a complete desktop...

And those temps are low already - the 3080 at stock helps a lot as it has 35W lower power consumption than the 2080s that this chassis was designed for.

In my opinion this is a very well balanced system and it also runs very quiet up to about 200W power consumption with only a little help from external cooling fans.

Those are ridiculously low temps especially for the GPU but doesn't it essentially relegate the X170 to desktop status?

I have used the Raider 18HX for some time now and was quite happy with using S4 state - it takes longer to enter and get out of but it is also very reliable.

I always deactivate fast boot, too and maybe that also plays a role. 

The important thing as always is to only enter whatever mode is desired with power disconnected and I also found the Raider to take some time until it would enter hibernate mode. For mine it is easy to note when it enters hibernate as only then the fans stop running - I have set them to always on.

Not desperate at all, Clevo Fan Control works just fine for the X170 chassis and I assume for the P775, too.

I do not like CCC because:

• it is not very well written and does stuff in a non-reliable way or even not at all
• its whole mode of operation feels clumsy and non-intuitive
• it messes with things it should not mess with
• it is hideous 
• for a program that has been in use for so long and for enthusiasts machines the configurability and ease of access to presets is very disappointing and unworthy of an enthusiast product, Clevo should have bought the Obsidian software when Obsidian went out of business as clearly they are unable to write proper software for their own products
• did I mention it is hideous? its garish colors and completely overblown size would be a reason for me to look for something else even if it was working

Researching about UUID I am still not clear if it is tied to hardware -or- if a clean install (including deleting all partitions on OS drive) can make my laptop lose its original UUID, which was used when purchasing the Obsidian Fan and Updater licenses for it.  It was running Windows 10 Pro originally.

 

Update: The UUID on m current system matches the one I provided Obsidian when using in Powershell the following command:

PS C:\Users\Admin> (Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_ComputerSystemProduct).UUID

 

Did anyone run into the same issue provided license code, not recognized after clean OS install and/or main drive upgrade?

Is there a way to make Obsidian Fan work as it should a registered software ?

Never used Obsidian fan control myself in the paid version. I never liked the restriction to only one specific laptop instead of being able to move the software to another machine. Also when I was interested for the first time Obsidian already seemed to be on the way out of the laptop business.

Note that I did not bother reinstalling the Control Station and Updater apps.

 

Any suggestions on what I can do to activate it properly?

 

If it is not possible, is there a better alternative application?

 

I suggest to try Clevo Fan Control. It is not a better alternative than a working version of the Obsidian Fan Control but overall I found it to be the next best option and it is free.

When you can get it cheaper that is a very good reason to get it but the poster I answered to wanted to get it to use less power and for that the 9980HK is not a good option.

As you have one can you also comment on the chip height?

I seem to remember it was a bit higher than standard Coffee Lake (refresh) height so whoever wants to use it may run into issues with a a laptop with a unified heatsink but then may this is not a much of an issue or there are different designs out there.

Cooling won't be a problem as the 1080s in the GT83 are the full fat 200W version and from what I recall all the MXM 2080s from MSI were limited to 150W.

Pretty sure though that extensive modifications of the cooling system will be necessary, not to talk about making the GT83 recognize the 2080 cards.

Not so sure you are that limited thermally as to not make use of a 9900K - it usually is better silicone and you could limit all core speed to not exceed the power uptake of your 8700K which at up to 150W is quite substantial 😄

The heatsink for the 20xx and 30xx GPUs looks very nice indeed and I see that you got very good temperatures for the CPU and GPU in your Time Spy run!

Taobao has a bunch of fans. Probably best to get the ones that are supposed to have maximum airflow and if needed reduce their speed.

Great job and that CPU score and total score in Time Spy will skyrocket with a 9900K but you know that 😉

Which heatsink did you get from Ali Express?

I see two systems here with the 11700K and heat issues and the problem is that the 11700K most of the time is a badly binned 11900K which needs a lot of power anyway. Without undervolting and at up to 5 GHz one will see lots of power consumption for little added gain.

With temperatures going very high and the system shutting off several things may apply:

1. the CPU power limit is reached

2. the system power limit is reached

3. the CPU temperature limit is reached

Looking at a temp of 98°C and up to 200W power consumption I would suggest to limit CPU power consumption to between 150 and 165W and adjust the CPU accordingly with Throttlestop for something like this:

Cores 1 to 2: 49 or 50

Cores 2 to 4: 49

Cores 5 to 6: 48

Cores 7 to 8: 45 or 46 depending what is needed to go to lower power consumption.

Start with a -75 undervolt and take it from there, maybe you can get back up a bit with the multipliers but it is a starting point. 

To give an idea of possible savings I tested a 10850K that would take up to 222W at 4.7GHz effective all core speed and with an undervolt it would go to less than 170W and I would expect it to be stable at 180W at most.

Going down to 4.6GHz from there would have resulted in another reduction in power consumption of around 15W so with a performance reduction of about 2% and undervolting it was possible to go from 222W to about 165W for a ca. 25% reduction in power consumption with effectively no meaningful loss in performance. That is a lot less heat and imo it is the way to go for longevity and more stable gaming and productive use, too.

Just moved around some files via my GT75 with 10G ethernet and found a nice Time Spy score. The GPU score was pretty much near the top of the 1080 / 8750H combo at the time but the CPU score was hampered by only having one memory stick on the other side of the mainboard and I wasn't going to take it apart to make it dual channel:

In my case laptop runs nearly 24 hours on full CPU + GPU usage (it's more or less like a server), thus I believe that a water-cooling solution might be better for that.

Yes that is a case where it would probably make sense to use the watercooling solution.

I bought that heatsink myself but as my usage turns out to be lighter (last I looked it was about 150 to 200W for 6 to 12 hours per day) and the water cooling heatsink is quite heavy and thge setup would be a bit tricky so I do not feel that I really need it and I will most likely sell it again.

@MaxxD should be able to fill you in as he has an X170 with the heatsink and also with the regular heatsink, too.
