  1. @iieeann How does the thermals on the system look at idle or minimal load? Have they improved the cooling solution so the keyboard doesn't get too hot to work with?
  2. Just an update on my 7670: I've been using it for a couple of months. It's definitely a quick and capable machine, even if it doesn't make use of full potential of the hardware. I mainly use it docked with a second screen. That is the only way to cope with the insane thermals. Normal laptop use is annoying because no setting I've tried gets the heat through the keyboard to a decent level. Very disappointed with Dell. The whole point of a machine like this is to spend many hours using powerful software. Anyhow, does anyone have recommendation for a good backpack for the 7670? I need something with lots of protection and not too bulky. Not necessary to have a super slim one.
  3. So I ask my sales agent about the terrible thermals on my 7670 and I get this reply: β€œWhy a unit is getting hot there might be a few factors. One of them is the Customer has loaded A image without the relevant Dell tools on but this is just a example or there might even be a physical fault. Any technical queries a Customer has to please come into contact with the Dell Help desk on 0800 166 760 The Dell Help Desk will guide the Customer on what the correct tools are to load as well as will determine if there are any hardware issues” What the hell? I literally setup a pre-configured system, using all Dell's optimisers etc. I even retrieve the driver updates using their app. Looks like they didn't even bother to cross check the build against my service tag. At this point, I'm happy I have a much faster computer than my outgoing 7510, but I am utterly disappointed with the user experience, especially for the fortune that this thing costs. I hope that I'll appreciate the machine more in the coming months when I get some useful work out of it.
  4. Yip. At my workplace we've also red flagged Dell. Mainly for terrible customer service. I really hope they can turn the tide. The used to make make great stuff.
  5. I'll give this a try. Installed Assetto Corsa and MS Flight Sim. Both ran without any issue I could see. No issues with the Logitech 29 on win11. Did need to download the drivers. Heat is still annoyingly high on the left side. But in docked mode I can live with it. Gonna start a new project with CAD and ANSYS. I'll post my findings with some 'real' work software.
  6. Yeah, this is mighty disappointing. I hope I can get to a happy median. The laptop will spend allot of time docked, so at least I won't feel the heat. Question: Do e cores have any role or advantage when running software like ANSYS or Solidworks etc? @ATAN I would definitely like to give your throttlestop settings a go. Just need to school myself on how to use it πŸ™‚
  7. I've been installing software: ANSYS, Simcentre, Solidworks etc. Machine is cool and quiet now. Big Relief. Now for the joy of getting around all the high DPI scaling issues πŸ™‚
  8. What really bugs me right now is the heat. The top left corner is really hot even on the keyboard side. The right side is fine. Is there a chance a fan is not working?
  9. Balanced Settings: Performance Settings: Seems to be similar to what others have found. So next step is a repaste of the CPU/GPU?
  10. Just received my 7670! Beautiful chassis and the touch screen is beautiful. But....just doing the initial setup this thing got so dang hot! Never had a precision that did that. I propped up the machine to give the underside vents and it seems to help. How the heck one would use this on their lap is unfathomable. Running cinebench without changing anything. I share those results shortly. Then I'll work through this thread and see if my experience is any different. Holding thumbs πŸ™‚
  11. I'm still waiting for my 7670 😞 Dell South Africa is not covering themselves in glory... amongst the worst service I've ever had. All these issues about the thermal issues have really dulled my enthusiasm. Sadly, even a "lowly" 7550 would have been and excellent upgrade for me. OK, enough self pity πŸ™‚
  12. Thanks @Aaron44126 I've got the exact part number i.e., the one for NVidia GPUs. I'll give the repair a go as soon as I have my new unit.
  13. Mine makes that periodic fan noise at start up. Right now after being on the whole day, on the dock, the fans are steady but at 60%. No load on the system and the CPU temps are 50 deg celsius.
  14. So in anticipation of the arrival of my new 7670, I wanted to get my current 7510 in tip top shape. I'll keep it as a secondary because it's still very capable. Thing is the system tells me a fan has failed. I wanted to order the replacement part but Dell (in South Africa) is not supporting this unit anymore. I can still run the unit though after bypassing the warning. I'll only start fiddling when I have the new unit is configured. But I did some investigation and it seems the fans are turning. The machine has had a new motherboard under warranty, so things were moved. So I'm wondering if I should first try to reseat and paste the cooler before finding a new part on eBay or wherever? Any other ideas on what to check before I open it up?
  15. Yeah. I was on big project for a couple of years and I froze my platforms for my own sanity. Time to test the new stuff! Oh well, I hope a A5500 games well πŸ™‚ (But seriously, this is secondary) Edit: Anyone have a recommendation for a backpack type bag? I've had a Targus one and it's been durable.
  16. This is a business purchase so it's just easier to get everything at once. Also the pro support will cover everything. I think I'm going to change the GPU to the A5500. As nice as the 3080ti sounds, I'll be annoyed if I run into any compatibility issues with ANSYS etc. FWIW, I tested the Win10 scaling with ANSYS and Solidworks and it works on 4k resolution on my 7510. I somehow remember that it didn't when I first got the machine. I wonder if there have been any Win or GPU updates that solved the issue?
  17. Ok, I got my local rep to quote on a 7670. Went for the i9 12950, 64GB, 3080ti and the 4k OLED screen. A couple of 2TB SSDs too. I wonder if the screen is overkill? Need to confirm that ANSYS, Solidworks etc can actually ran at that resolution.
  18. Awesome @Aaron44126! Thanks for that. I think I'm going to go for the 7670. The 16in screen should be fine and good compromise over the size the of the 7770. Any thoughts which GPU is the way to go? A5500 or 3080ti? I will mainly use CAD and CFD, but I'd like to do some gaming as well.
  19. Hi Everyone, My first post to this forum! Thanks to all the contributors for the great content. I'm in the engineering research game and I've used precision workstations for many years. My current 7510 needs to be replaced. It still does the job brilliantly, but it's out of warranty and the CPU fan is on it's last legs. (I can't seem to get this part locally in South Africa, so I'll likely import it and do the repair myself). I'm looking to get either a 7570 or 7770 as replacement with a fairly high spec. I've no doubt this will be a huge improvement on my 7510, but still have the good bits that makes the precision ideal for my kind of work. Now I've been toying about the idea about getting a 5770 instead for the light weight. I know the screen in not matte and mouse pad is enormous, but what I'm most afraid of is that it may throttle (excessively) under load compared to it's bigger brothers. Does anyone have any experience with the 5770 and does the 12th Gen Intels' get away from the throttling issues?
