  1. Kind of confusing with the driver labeling here. I downloaded, checked the checksum and signature, and installed the 5.14.10.10 version from dell.com for my system. Rebooted, and the fingerprint reader now works again. Under device manager, the fingerprint reader however still shows driver version 5.14.1.1 the same as before.
  2. Latest driver for the palmrest FIPS fingerprint reader appears to be https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=8chrt&oscode=wt64a&productcode=precision-17-7770-laptop 5.14.10.10, A26 Release date 07 Aug 2023 Mine was updated through windows update I believe and shows version 5.14.1.1 Date May 2023. I'm not sure if 5.14.10.10 is the same as 5.14.1.1 ??? Dell shows Other Available Versions 5.13.11.19, A2509 May 2023 5.9.8.17, A2002 Mar 2022 but no mention of the 5.14.1.1 version on Dell's site. I think I'll try updating to 5.14.10.10 and see if that makes a difference.
  3. Yes, I did reboot both machines multiple times. No driver update shows in the last 3 days under Windows Update -> Update History -> Drivers section. The 7770 worked fine to login with fingerprint this afternoon. I turned it off, took a walk, and came back and it wouldn't read my fingerprint at all. I thought maybe I had done something to my hand so I tried the other machine, and the other Dell too didn't read my finger. My even older Dell does read my fingerprint ok, so at least my fingers are ok 🙂 I tried adding a new fingerprint on the 7760 and it doesn't indicate anything is happening on the screen where it says to lift your finger and press several times... like you've never touched it at all today...
  4. Today, September 26, the fingerprint readers on both my Dell Precision 7770 and my Dell Precision 7760 stopped working to login to Windows 10. Both worked yesterday and neither works today. When I touch them at the windows login, it doesn't say wrong fingerprint, it doesn't do anything at all like I didn't touch them. Anyone else see this? This is with the palmrest integrated fingerprint readers.
  5. Thanks very much! I'm thinking the difference in AdobeRGB (and DCI-P3 although I haven't used that color space) is actually quite huge between those monitors, with the 88.5% AdobeRGB dropping quite a bit of the extended blue green range AdobeRGB affords over sRGB. This hits me because I do quite a bit of photography involving water and green nature... I love my current Dell Premier Color monitors but they have some pixels and one has a smudge behind the screen somehow... but the color is better than the Dell monitors I can afford now (now a year after I started this thread.) Not sure if Dell will release new 2024 models this year... right now though it looks like the only Premier Color monitor is the 32" 8k which is still quite $$$$. Asus has a 32" OLED ProArt monitor too that looks interesting. My Dell laptop with an oled screen has really beautiful blues and greens... would love to compare that side by side with the current Dell offering. Wish Dell would offer a new Premier Color 4k monitor in the 30" range...

    new xps 15 2-in-1

The 16 2-in-1 is quite nice. And the oled screen is beautiful! Thanks!
  7. Any thoughts on Kingston's line of KC3000 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs? https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/kc3000-nvme-m2-solid-state-drive
  8. A better thermal solution would make a 7790 a good upgrade. Right now it's got great acceleration for short runs, but long tasks such as simple AV scan seems to result in many of the cores not running at 100% now so the last cpu generation didn't result in much of a speed up over the previous. If we could get a higher performance thermal solution, I think the existing cpu could have a nice performance increase.
  9. OK, so old Windows 10 laptop wakes up if I touch the touchscreen, but not if I only touch the fingerprint reader. New Windows 10 laptop wakes up if I touch the fingerprint reader, but not if I touch the touchscreen. Any ideas on what causes one behavior or the other?
  10. Or maybe a GL.iNet GL-MT3000. According to OpenWrt Firmware Selector you have the option to install the open source generic OpenWrt latest firmware on it. I don't know how much functionality would be lost by running the latest generic firmware vs. the GL customized firmware, but that might partially alleviate a concern with how up-to-date the software on (any) travel router is vs. windows for example.
  11. Would a GL.iNET travel router such as the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2J7WSDK/ ) improve security vs. connecting to unkown untrusted wifi networks with a windows laptop alone? On one hand, I imagine windows might receive security updates faster than a product such as the GL.INET router. So in a worst case the GL.iNET router might introduce an additional security issue by adding it to the mix. On the other hand, adding the GLiNet router would add a layer of nat security between the untrusted wifi and the windows laptop. What do you think -- would carrying one of these be a security benefit when connecting a windows laptop to unknown wifi, such as in an unknown airbnb in a foreign country?
  12. On my latest DELL order, I wanted Windows Pro as the OS instead of Windows Home, and this requires DELL apparently to ship all the way from China! I don't want to get too far off topic in the forum here with "made in the USA" vs. "Made in China", but this has me thinking for sure. I guess having one worldwide shipping hub is most affordable for DELL, and I do like the low prices! But don't people in large countries such as the USA have enough volume of orders to justify a warehouse and configuration operation here? It would certainly make the order process a lot nicer. Is the real estate and labor cost just so high in the USA that it's economically infesible to even configure a notebook here instead of shipping them one by one all the way from China? For example, the estimated DELL delivery time was 13 days if you select Windows Pro. Then after ordering, it switched to 5 days estimated delivery which was great in the DELL order status! However, then customer service said it may take 7-10 days to get a tracking number from the carrier in a worst case, so it's hard today to say exactly when it will be delivered! I guess we've gotten spoiled to having a tracking number where you have a very good idea that the item is moving and when it will be delivered, so this feels very odd. I might have posted this before, but I'm a bit worried about the USA. I don't mind taking advantage of great cost savings manufacturing something, but it feels like we've gone pretty far from home when we can't even configure a laptop here any longer... Anyway, there's my yearly plea for made in, or at least configured in, the USA. Will continue checking the DELL order status, until I order the next one next year if I have the same experience 😉
  13. Well, we will see how it goes. I don't really use dark mode now... I'm not sure many of the websites I visit will switch to dark mode easily (gmail for example doesn't seem to switch if I set windows to dark mode as a test now. Actually it seems like testing right now none of the websites I visit actually change their page color to dark mode just switching windows to dark mode, so the majoirty of the screen stays bright/white.) So I may regret my choice in a power outage, but I went ahead and went for the oled. They reduced the price by $400 yesterday so the oled UHD is the same price as the FHD version right now, and adds an nvidia geforce mx550 for better or worse (battery). With the standard FHD and Intel Iris integrated graphics it says the 16" 2-in-1 gets "Up to 18 hours, 56 minutes" MobileMark 2018 battery benchmark: Inspiron 16 2-in-1 tested with 13th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-1360P Processor, 16GB, 512GB SSD, FHD+ Touch 300nits Display, Intel® Iris Xe Graphics, 6-cell 84 Whr. Based on testing using the Mobile Mark 2018 battery life benchmark So we'll see how the oled + geforce does. During a power outage I'll be concerned with simply being able to browse the web for as long as possible, so hopefully it won't hurt me too badly. I couldn't resist the upgraded graphics card and screen for the same price!
  14. I'm wondering how battery life might compare between an Inspiron 16 2-in-1 with either: (option 1) 16", FHD+ 1920x1200, 60Hz, WVA, Touch, 300 nit, ComfortView Plus and (option 2) 16", UHD+ 3840x2400, 60Hz, OLED, Touch, WVA, 400 nit, ComfortView Plus
