How to "install" thermal pad on WD Red SN700 SSD?
serpro69 replied to serpro69's topic in Components & Upgrades
Thanks a lot! Having not dealt with desktops for the past 15+ years I can't say I ever had to install thermal pads on the SSDs, so just wanted to confirm that my assumptions were correct before I made any moves.- 3 replies

How to "install" thermal pad on WD Red SN700 SSD?
serpro69 replied to serpro69's topic in Components & Upgrades
Found this, which I guess kind of answers my questions I have a slightly different expansion card and the SSD, but I think the same principles apply. The sticker with the serial number etc is also on top of my SSD, but from what I could gather online - you're not supposed to remove that. So I guess I'll just stick the thermal pad on top of it, and will see if I need any rubber pads to support the SSD on the bottom and just stick them wherever.- 3 replies

I have a WD Red SN700 SSD that I want to install in a QNAP NAS via their QM2 expansion card. The expansion card has a heatsink and came with thermal pads and rubber pads for the (potential) SSD, but I'm confused a bit on how to "apply" them. 1. The thermal pad. On the manual, it appears that they've cut the termal pad into pieces? Do I actually need to do that, or can I stick the whole piece on it without cutting it? The width of the pad is exactly same as the ssd, so slightly wider than the controllers. (see pic below). Would that be a problem? I'm not sure how to precisely cut this thing really, since controllers are covered by the sticker. 2. The bottom of the SN700 is completely flat. Does that mean I don't need the rubber pads? I'm not entirely sure where to place them otherwise. Expansion card manual ( https://www.qnap.com/en/support/con_show.php?cid=115#c ) is a bit generic, so I'm not 100% sure how to proceed, and I don't want to damage things out of lack of knowledge. So hopefully someone could give me some tips on how to prepare the ssd.

4TB M.2 SSD's, 16TB HDD, Keyboard
serpro69 replied to SapphiraTriX298's topic in Computer Components
I mean, yeah, I do want (I want a lot of things actually ), but I'm very unlikely to get in on this. So no duel this time hehe Shipping + 25% tax (and shipping costs are also taxed btw... ) - I can probably find something locally at about the same price and not bother OP with shipping overseas. -

Would love to get some of those M.2 SSDs. But add to the cost shipping to Europe + tax, and this suddenly makes absolutely no sense (that's considering you'd be willing to ship outside of US at all, which I'll be telling myself that you're not ) Good luck with your sale, these are tempting deals for anyone who lives in US and needs extra storage. -

the answer lies within the question

Yeah, I also noticed that one and was doing some reading about it yesterday. Not sure if it can qualify as a main-driver for me, but definitely worth taking a closer look at.

Yeah, no it's not, that's why I added "to a certain degree" I don't really expect samsung to make any serious moves right off the bat, not unless they see this kind of policy that google is implementing will affect their own market share noticeably. Which is anyways too early to tell if it will. But it does look like lately more and more people want to keep their phones for longer than 2-3 years, which is a good trend overall I'd say.

Anyone concerned about privacy in browsers, there's a nice overview here https://privacytests.org/ Was considering trying out Vivaldi - looks interesting enough, but privacy-related it seems to be behind on so many things compared to Brave and Firefox that I'll probably stick to what I use today.

I plan to use it as a mini-server, so don't need a dedicated screen/kb/mouse/... or anything additional really.

Oh yeah, Boba Fett was also quite fine. I felt it was a bit more fast-paced than Ahsoka. My lady can't be bothered to watch anything SW-related, so in my case I have to watch them on my own

Nop. I also couldn't care less - I have absolutely zero plans on using it My only use-case for Win10 right now is occasional gaming, other than that - I use Linux daily and since some time ago even convinced my lady do to the same finally

Apple switching to USB-C: Yay or Nay?
serpro69 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
Haven't heard about it, but then again, having an android phone I can't be bothered to search for "iphone hacks" :D It's good to know there are alternatives to itunes these days at least. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely relay the info :) -
...and that's despite all the nastiness they go through to push winduhz 11 on you. The other day, after booting up into Windows, instead of a login screen I was greeted with a Windows 11 logo, and at first it seemed like they just pushed the update. After taking a closer look, it was a "please upgrade to this bs OS" screen. Funny thing is, it took me a bit to discover a tiny-blurred-into-background "not now" button at the bottom of the screen. And the only other two (very prominent) buttons in the middle of the screen were essentially the same - "Install now" or "Download now and install later" You'd think this is where it ended, but after clicking "not now" and actually logging in to the OS - I got another prompt to install w11 right away, again with all the tricks to actually make you click on the "install" button... wtf And I mean I know to "think twice before clicking anything". Imagine now many people actually fell for this clickbait bs. And then you have all the new laptops coming with W11 also, and all the corporate users being forced to use W11. So I'd estimate that the real number of users who actually want to use it is way lower than that even.

Apple switching to USB-C: Yay or Nay?
serpro69 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
I still do that. Is there any other (better) way even with unlimited cellular data and 5G speeds? I don't think so (IMO) My wife , brother and sister all have iphones. The hoops they have to jump through to move a file to/from laptop from/to an iphone is astonishing. So yeah, I could definitely see why very few people use charging port to transfer data to/from an iphone lol When it comes to usb on iphones - I definitely see it as a good thing, simply because now (well, not really "now" - we still have an older iphone, but you know, some day... ) I don't need to look for expensive cables and chargers for my wife's iphone and she can simply reuse the abundance of USB-C that I have already -
No idea really, I usually don't follow up on these kind of news. The less I know about how much I need to wait - the easier it is to actually wait lol But Andor at least has (some) info about season 2 on imdb, Mandalorian does not. Was it even extended for another season?

Saw a couple episodes so far. It's not great by any means, but it's still fine. Definitely better than most (if not all) of SW movies that came out after Disney took over , but not better than, say, Mandalorian, IMO

Don't have a Pi yet, but it's been on my list for awhile now :D Apart from the Pi-Hole, what I wanted to use it for is to be the "master" for syncthing, through which other devices can sync files.
