The Beast Returns - Alienware m18 - i9 13980HK 24c/RTX 4090 Mobile
serpro69 replied to ssj92's topic in Alienware 18 and M18x
At first glance this looks like one of the best laptops this year will have to offer. I'm considering it as a "workstation replacement", precisions were are such a disappointment last year and I don't expect any miracles this time around. Very interested to see some reviews once they're released and also thinking about going the AMD-route if they'll be good enough. I'm also eyeing M16 because I'll probably go for portability if they both have same features and the only major differences are screen size and number of ports. Especially interested to hear about the cooling solution in M16. PS: I think you've a typo on the CPU? (Both in the title and description) -
Looks like China is trying to solve their covid-related problems the same way now - https://edition.cnn.com/2022/12/25/asia/china-covid-cases-publishing-nhc-intl/index.html

Fun KB for not so fun price. And probably not very comfortable to type on if you can't touch-type (although it would be strange if it didn't support a simple backlight or smth like that)

Better than? Have you tried the built-in sync functionality? IMO brave has a pretty good one. IIRC you can do a two-way or one-way sync between multiple devices (incl mobile). Worked pretty well for me, but it's been awhile since I've used it last.

Lol I read this yesterday also. I also remember mentions of his parents being complicit in the whole thing. How can one mega-fraudster post bail for another mega-fraudster... what a time to be alive

Oh, this could potentially be interesting. Assuming that Dell's Precision 7x80 will most likely be the same disappointment as this year's models, I'm thinking this might be a good "sturdy and powerful workhorse" alternative

Oh yeah, it's very interesting to look at the correlation between his decision to acquire Twitter and the Tesla stock price going down. I think I read yesterday that Musk briefly lost his "richest person place", could well be looking at a longer-term second place.

I was quite skeptical really, a single hand will be too much to count the good roles Stallone has had in the past decade or so. But the good ratings convinced me to give it a try and I was happy that I did. AFAIK it's already renewed for season 2, so the show seems to be doing quite well :)

Funny you should mention it, I did in fact start it on Wednesday haha Also saw a couple episodes of Tulsa King. It's not Great (IMO the imdb ratings are a bit too high), but I still think it is quite good. Nice to see Stallone has some good roles left in him. In the non-fiction domain I'm currently watching Rise of Empires: Ottoman , a few episodes in and so far, so good.

Thanks @astrohip! Yeah, I figured this might be a common thing and probably not worth it to go through return/replace process since replacement will likely be quite similar. Just wanted to confirm if that was actually common, which it seems that it is based on your comment and the photo from review I linked above. Doesn't seem like there are a lot of owners of recent (2021/22) XPS models here on the forums. I wonder if it might be worth it to merge this thread with the one you made for XPS 17 9710, and have one thread for both 15 and 17" variants.

Just got a Dell XPS 15 9510 from Amazon. Anyone else owns this machine? I have a few questions. 1. Is this space between lid and body by design (see attachment)? I don't have this on an older XPS 15 9550, but I suspect it might be intentional, so want to check if anyone else has seen smth similar or knows if this is an issue or not. I can see smth similar on a pic from this review https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-9510-Review-Multimedia-Laptop-convinces-with-new-OLED-Panel.554277.0.html , but maybe not as accentuated ? Just wondering if this is "normal" or I should return it. 2. Not related to the laptop itself, but rather purchasing on Amazon. Do I understand correctly, that I get warranty directly from Amazon (it was sold by Amazon directly), and not from Dell? Should I bother trying to transfer ownership? (Never bought a laptop on Amazon before, so I have no idea how this works)

Oh yeah, Andor is good, and definitely better than Obi Wan. Still, not as great as Mandalorian IMO. I guess I need to lower my expectations a bit and not expect another great SW-show, since that seems to happen just once in a decade or so

Witcher 3 Next Gen Delayed(hold the surprised gasps!)
serpro69 replied to Hertzian56's topic in News & Announcements
Haven't played the game either :/ although heard many great things about it. But I always thought that the show was based on the books, not the game. Was it poorly received? I think liked second season even better than first. And ratings for the second season seem just a little worse than the first. -
Oh, sweet, grabbed it :) Thanks for the heads up.

I've been watching Shantaram lately. It's not exactly following the book closely I'd say, but I think it's a good adaptation nevertheless.

Ah, of course. Completely forgot about such feature, I think I used it last time like 10 years ago or something like that. Didn't think anyone would still use custom formatting for text on forums, heh. Maybe it should just be disabled if the themes don't properly change the custom colors?
-
I've seen similar issues with some other members' posts also. Could be an issue with the forums' themes I suppose, and not that some people intentionally change default text color to smth else every time?

Sure, weekly (or daily) status reports within a team are fine, good even. But weekly status reports via email from the entire corp... with work summaries and code samples.... I can't see how that's productive. Been there, done that lol - in our case we had to fill out an excel sheet and mail it to the manager
-
I like this one https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/21/23472372/elon-musk-wants-every-twitter-employee-sending-weekly-updates-about-their-work-via-email-now Some years back I was living/working in India for a short-medium period of time, and we had a similar "initiative" brought from above. They wanted to try something "new and exciting that would revolutionize the way everyone worked, boost productivity and performance, and all your usual blah". Our department got the "lucky" draw apparently. IIRC we did this for about half a year, until we finally convinced the managers to stop the bs. The thing about such activities, they hamper productivity rather than help boost it. And not because you feel like you're being micro-managed, but simply because it's a very inconvenient process that you need to either: a) somehow incorporate into your daily workflow so that reports are accurate enough; or b) make things up in these reports. Now, we were like 5 people in the dept, so 1 person could easily skim through all of these reports on a weekly/monthly basis or whatever. Imagine how many people-hours are going to be spent to go over these reports for every Twitter employee... sheer insanity. Way to make "Twitter the highest performing tech software company in the world", Musk.

That sounds a bit odd. Are you forever stuck with the stock OS that came from factory and can't do a fresh windows installation? And by saying "unnecessary", you mean the stock OS doesn't come any bloatware that should be killed right off? Is there no possibility to install Armoury Crate (and have it functioning normally) on a fresh windows installation? Also, I'm planning to install Fedora on it, and I can't see how I'd do that w/o wiping the drive first (probably won't do dual-boot for now because the SSD is only 512 GB).

Very well said @MyPC8MyBrain . I don't know about my own purchases in the future, I think next year will tell with the 7x80 models. But I've stopped recommending and even started discouraging buying Dell to anyone I know who considers going with them. At my current project, the company was considering Dell vs HP vs Lenovo for their next laptop line, and they went with Lenovo in the end. Such behavior from Dell should not be rewarded with our money, they should feel the pain of making poor decisions and I really hope their sales go down significantly (which I doubt they will, unfortunately) so they fix these issues properly.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 as replacement for Dell XPS 15 9550?
serpro69 replied to serpro69's topic in What Laptop Should I Buy?
True. But the soldered RAM will still run dual-channel, and the other one single channel, right? I don't think (or well, I hope - haven't really tested it, or read too much about it either) the performance hit will not be that big.
