  1. I have a couple of devices that would provide opportunity for bonding / link aggregation. Specifically one could do 2x2.5G, and another 1+1+2.5G (if that's even possible, probably not). Thoughts on switch options with 802.3ad support?
  2. End of an era, but TBH it makes sense. 33 years... People running antique CPUs for some reason will have to make do with older kernels.
  3. Yeah, I saw that. It has fewer packages than say Ubuntu, but it's not bad, and there is presumably nothing one can't build from sources on this (or perhaps install using RPMs), and the performance is hardly a joke.
  4. In some rare cases people may have missed the small print in their mobo documentation. For example, the MEG ACE downgrades the first PCie slot to 8 lanes if a particular M.2 slot is in use.
  5. Yeah, I think one needs a specific use case to start worrying about TBW, one such use case would be reinstalling a gigantic Steam collection every week for some reason ๐Ÿ˜‰ Heavy swapping can also deal a blow here, but a) few people push their systems that far b) the solution is to get more RAM. I went with a Firecuda 530 based on the leading max TBW and pricing/availability, thanks everyone for their feedback.
  6. Surprisingly, he also did a (a bit basic) video on how to optimise the 13900k for energy efficiency. The man has layers and/or perhaps energy efficiency is a particularly hot topic in Germany if not worldwide at the moment ๐Ÿ˜‰
  7. That's cool, although for this to be deeply true, you would need to be a power user with lots of Linux and Windows experience. Some of the points you have made contradict that though. I accept that and propose an improvement: a light user. People who don't really require a particularly powerful computer. All clear, you are a light user. There is nothing wrong with that, and none of my remarks apply to your computing experience or system requirements. You will be very happy with either Windows or a Mac system. That's a bit of an overgeneralization mixed with a contradiction. A huge swathe of business users are not really that 'heavy duty' in the system performance sense, and consequently have at best a vague idea of basic concepts around computer system performance to begin with. As long as Edge and Office work, all is fine. Those business users constitute prime Windows customer base although many also use Macs mainly for reasons such as style, aesthetics and niche software compatibility. For clarity's sake, heavy duty / power users would include creative people like 3D artists, architects, video editors, but also many (but not all) software developers, data scientists, some engineers, and indeed most gamers and gaming industry professionals. As you can see the spectrum is wider than what you suggested, and I am sure the list could be further expanded. There isn't a huge complaint regarding stability of the recent versions of Windows, although your experience seems somewhat idealized. This is a function of both the distance you have covered trying to push the system, and your reference points (which appear to be historical versions of Windows). BTW reliability and high performance are not mutually exclusive. I would say that even people who claim they don't give a damn about performance, sometimes haven't really had a chance to appreciate the benefits of a more responsive system. It's a comfort zone trap and affects all of us to some extent. I recall thinking at one point "who apart from gamers needs a 120Hz monitor, 60Hz is fine".. until I had a chance to explore and experience a 120Hz monitor ๐Ÿ™‚ The potential performance boost is more in the 10-30%+ range depending on the distribution and applications. Whether the "Linux computing experience" is a compromise or not depends on the extent to which the performance improvements contribute to it, the use cases, open mindedness to alternatives, the raw technical skills and the general levels of satisfaction one derives from working in a *nix environment (from non-technical people the last component will be nil). For example, I have seen a definite improvement in computing experience over Windows. Rather than pointlessly argue for light users to switch to Linux (those who have some motivation will find a way), I would tease Microsoft to try and bridge the performance gap - although that seems like a pretty tall order as well, especially given the direction of travel. Should that miracle happen though, all Windows users would stand to strictly benefit, whether they currently think they would notice the improvement or not.
  8. I guess a few more weeks until Jensen's grief after the lost mining boom reaches the acceptance stage. A healthy price cut is needed in order for them to be able to compete with AMD and for the broader market to be able to afford their products.
  9. "Chernobyl" series is def worth a watch, perhaps in the context of all the nuclear threats flying around.
  10. Windows 10 and 11 (to expand/clarify the system classification: the casual user, gamer and general corporate worker-oriented OSes) are resource hogs compared to Linux, and quite a bit slower. With Linux we are talking about sub 1GB RAM utilization on some distros. No need to invoke the Amiga OS strawman.
  11. Dear.. I hope you get to enjoy the Northern Lights, or are you too far south for that? https://www.fiftydegreesnorth.com/uk/article/best-time-for-northern-lights-in-norway
  12. 44k out of the box? Be honest bro ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously though, 12th and 13th gen are wonderful CPUs. Should something unfortunate happen to Taiwan, at least we will have those (but no motherboards... ).
  13. OK, so it's board quality, makes sense. Z790 vs Z690 should not make a difference in theory.
  14. Why would you hope to gain anything in terms of memory OC? The memory controller is on the CPU.
  15. The problem with Windows with general is that you leave too much performance on the table. Casual users don't mind, which is what this system is all about.
  16. Yeah, that's kind of like it, although, to add insult to the injury there is no way to unscrew this (unlike what the picture above would suggests). Gentle wiggling didn't quite cut it, this thing is seriously stuck. I do have to give it to them: installing the drive was indeed extremely simple.... ๐Ÿคจ Exactly right, the design is flawed. Gentle (and not so gentle) pressing didn't do it, attempting to lever from different directions didn't do it. Need to get mini-pliers for this, as I can't even get a proper grip with my fingers. SSD dimensions could be a factor - this trapped a Firecuda 530 which seems to be very slightly on a thicker side. Running the same PSU. Only needed a new fan over the years. Now it's kind of hard to even consider other brands, however well reviewed, as those reviews don't take the all-important reliability into account (with the exception of the SuperNova T2, where reviewers piggyback on the mining reputation). I did try that, but perhaps not strong enough. Will give this another go armed with pliers. I am not objecting to the idea of making things easier, but if you're going to do it - make it right. It needs to outperform the previous solution (including in terms of reliability), and this mechanism is very clearly too crude and flaky. I mean for starters one should be able to unscrew the whole retention mechanism if needed - there is no way to do that on this particular M.2 slot. Maybe it's done differently on the Unify-X, but on the ACE the retainers at the end of the M.2 slots are fixed! There are extra spare ones that can be used for some short SSDs. The following excerpt from the manual illustrates. Looks like they saved up on a couple of screws here... Edit: the manual is also wrong - the clips move on the opposite side - sort of from 12 to 6 o'clock forward to lock, whereas the manual suggests the mechanism is locked in counter-clockwise manner. Oh dear.
  17. Has anyone ever faced difficulties removing SSDs attached to the board using these plastic clips (MSI ACE). Well intentioned MSI came up with an idiotic mechanism whereby the "convenient" clip seems permanently latched. Can't move it either way, can't unscrew the whole thing, won't budge in any direction. Any ideas?
  18. That's an additional adapter someone ordered, bro John has a new GF3 with native 12VHPWR support so should be ok ๐Ÿ™‚
  19. Actually, on laptops most people would agree Kryonaut sucks. I found it underwhelming on a desktop CPU too, although I didn't have a contact frame back then so maybe the contact was bad. Even if it worked fine on a CPU, its longevity is limited, so I would cross it off on that basis. Potentially a similar concern about SYY 157. The 15.8W/mK spec is appealing, but it's very cheap. Would it last? There are some doubts. I guess at this price point it's worth a shot, thanks for the recommendation. I also wouldn't mind trying the new Alphacool Apex if I could get my hands on any.
  20. The whole thing makes no sense. If he is affiliated with EVGA, they could arrange for you to ship stateside, but then why would they do that. I'm sure EVGA would just get what they need directly from Intel. I'd stay well away here.
  21. I found that guy's offer quite underwhelming, basically a lowball. Taking about some EVGA gifts lol There is very little availability of this CPU. The best offer on Amazon.de is $860 from scalpers for what is likely a dreadful quality specimen. He probably assumed he is going to get the CPU off a 15 y.o. in mom's basement for an extra few bucks (apologies in the unlikely event that's the case - didn't mean to be rude)
  22. The upside would be broadening the scope of the forum which should translate to increased traffic, user engagement, etc. We can talk about cars, songs, next purchases, but on NBR we ultimately couldn't talk about covid, for instance (due to an overly heavy-handed response to a blowup). The world as we know it could be coming to an end, and the only topical conversation you could have on the old NBR would be "What are you drinking right now?". It's a bit silly isn't it? As long as people are respectful and understanding of each other while keeping things on the legal side, no topic would need to be off limits IMHO. Of course, those constraints in itself would make discussing certain topics very tricky to impossible, and some would probably need to adjust their style a little in order to effectively participate within the framework. As you say, the downside is the potential for some discussions to descend into fierce flame wars, usually between just two members, therefore for this to work you'd need an ability to cool a member off on just that part of the forum, so as to not throw the baby away with the bathwater, potentially. In fact, the UK forum I mentioned set this up as a separate forum instance (probably for this very technical reason). It's a bit risky, but the result could be interesting.
  23. Sure, a section like that could prove to be a somewhat heavier lift for the admin team, but remember this is so far a very small community. I'm sure any dregs would be identified and robustly banned in no time (perhaps it's even possible to ban someone from a section of the forum?). One of the major challenges for our civilization in general (but Western in particular), is the pervasive polarization and inability to have a normal conversation. So having a facility to exercise that would be a positive, in that broader sense.
  24. I feel like this is a long shot, but given the lack of corporate constraints, perhaps the community could furnish a little thread in Off-topic for this kind of light and exclusively non-/anti-political stuff. How about something satirical like "Mr Fox and Friends" ๐Ÿ˜ Could be members-only access for the peace of mind. I've seen something similar on one of the main UK cycling forums.
  25. Can't believe those people can't just ask Intel for well binned CPU samples.
