Yeah, there should be a setting to disable this permanent remapping behaviour especially in an enthusiast product. I wonder if NVidia or partners would honour an RMA based on memory OC triggering fake permanent loss of VRAM. Perhaps VBIOS reflashing can reset the remapping...

Interesting, wasn’t aware of this, same output on my 3090ti. Guess that feature might only apply when ECC is enabled (in which case NVCP shows most of that as well, at least on Linux). Regardless of whether this requires ECC or not, it indicates permanent memory damage, and the remapping will persist for the lifetime of the GPU according to NVidia. Edit: reading further, it seems that once the driver identifies a region of memory as faulty, it’s marked as unusable and remapped such that it will never be used again. Pretty sure this requires ECC to be enabled. OCers’ dream!

You need a higher-end laptop with TB3/4 for that. USB-C won’t cut it. There are also card size and PSU limitations, 3 slot max on the largest units, 2x8 pin in the Razer (the PSU can be upgraded at an extra cost though).

I think humanity would survive that one. MP gaming was already rife with game-breaking cheating years ago when I quit. Anyway, too bad there is no footage of the actual thing in action, but based on the description I suspect this MSI implementation will turn out to be a gimmick. Also, it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to ban offending monitors lol

The enthusiastic and helpful gentlemen's advice on how to build the best desktop is second to none, but it would only make sense to follow that if you have a real need for the device, the space for it, and - crucially, given the cost - the funds, with no way of allocating them that would benefit you more.

Sorry, forgot to mention you will be taking an 8GB VRAM haircut. I would not bother unless I had a specific need for this (i.e. a particularly annoying framerate issue that’s not satisfactorily resolved via a settings adjustment). Would not worry about synthetic benchmarks at all. Plus, big bonus citizenship points for not giving Huang/NGreedia any money unless absolutely necessary. I realise this is easier said that done, it’s a test that can take substantial willpower, but it does feel really good if you pull through. Kind of like resisting getting ripped off on microtransactions in your favourite EA game.

Depends on the load, but basically those cards are made to withstand a lot. One year of 24x7 is 8760h, those consumer cards can take many years of full load without breaking a sweat. Would not worry about it from the reliability perspective. The 4080S would indeed be a bit of an upgrade (ca. +20% since your 3090 performs like a 3090 Ti), unless something is memory-bound in which case there would be a 25% hit.

Intel Clear Linux. It’s a less well known distro but beats Windows signiticantly in some native benchmarks, and certainly in practice.

It just depends on the intended use and whether you enjoy tinkering and tuning Intel CPUs. If it’s just gaming and light productivity then likely no need to worry about thermals and little to no tuning would be needed. As for heavy workloads, good luck: the heat flux over the 13900K die at stock full load is said to exceed that of a Bunsen burner lol Then again, this inefficiency can be optimised away. derBauer has an OK video on that.

You can UV 13900K to deliver bulk of the stock performance while drawing 225W-250W. I would assume 14900K is pretty similar in that regard, although not sure if it is capable of delivering more performance per Watt in that range. Either way, if you are planning on using all cores in those CPUs, then a 240 AIO would likely prove highly frustrating.

It would appear that this thread has veered off the topic. Given the presumed seriousness of the situation, I would again suggest that the owner should prioritise his time and money spend on health. Would a new PC benefit him, or should they buy say a new bike and exercise more if possible, and eat better food for instance? Even if the new desktop was still on, as we know, the budget would be limited so discussing the merits of MAXED OUT 4090 PERFORMANCE is perhaps not so helpful here. In the end it’s just mostly quite silly repetitive entertainment, just delivered with higher fidelity and fps which do suffer from diminishing returns.

I’m sorry to say that following this kind of advice likely cost me at least $500 on a new mobo alone. In the end I found the frame to be a completely unnecessary and harmful gimmick promoted by the influencers, I guess similar to the failed 12VHPWR adapters. The stock ILS is perfectly adequate and stable. My replacement ILS-only 13900K system has been working without a hitch for months, as opposed to frequent temp degradation with the frame installed, and eventual damage to the mobo (and likely the CPU as well, as it required a delid afterwards). The trick is to pay attention to the play in the arm, and align that prior to latching. The more ethical influencers (GN) caveated their sponsored reviews with repeated warnings against possible socket damage, given the impossibility of reproducing factory-level frame alignment without specialist tools, and I only have myself to blame for ignoring that sensible advisory. Sure, someone who’s built hundreds or perhaps thousands of PC configs may feel completely comfortable but that’s an outlier and not a basis for a generally-applicable and unconditional advice. Can’t argue with the initial aesthetics though, although obviously the frame may or may not be actually visible in a fully assembled system 🙂

I can relate to that too well. Most salesmen are probably best approached as essentially conmen. Almost got tricked into an unwanted and, as it turned out, flawed purchase recently. The typical boiler room sales manoeuvres were a big red flag from the beginning, yet my inner idiot talked me into ignoring them. Managed to pull out eventually but lost the deposit and had to worry for weeks about potential further costs. Mentally taxing for sure. Anyway, I have only had one or two brief aftersales experiences with Apple and would rate those reasonably high, other than that no issues with any Apple device we have had. The same cannot be said about Android, which I had been with since the beginning until last year. Literally every single one suffered from some issues (not even including the cessation of updates). Samsungs? Terrible battery life. LG? RMA, then fell apart. Nokia? Fell apart out of warranty. Sony? RMA, then screen split off. Etc. On the iOS side there is of course Apple Care+.

Speaking of which, I was actually looking at the Pixel 7 Pro at the time of last upgrade, with a view to install a reasonably well known degoogled pixel-only OS. Decided against that for the following reasons: * Lack of trust in the custom OS, and the third party app store * Instant and irrecoverable warranty loss * Loss of camera functionality * Strikingly lacklustre display compared to the Galaxy S and the iPhone Pro * The camera was not actually in par with the above either, although that was perhaps in part due to the screen They priced the device competitively though, so it’s interesting that Google decided to now remove that incentive. They are getting bolder, more desperate for the cash, or both - even of they improved the phone to the point where it is more technically competitive. Everything else being equal they make a lot of extra money on each unit through data monetisation. Anyway, should Apple stray from their current path, the custom degoogled Android route would need to be revisited.

It’s about privacy, as in the right of control over private data such as family photos, tax returns etc. so they may remain private instead of being used by virtually everyone able to afford the data to be able to profile people for various reasons, including political.

I would go a step further and assume they are monetising any data they can access, with well documented consequences, including the funding of the catastrophic AI/AGI research.

Have found no mention of this „password encryption” and the consensus seems to be the storage is not private. Their FAQ seems pretty opaque on this. Even if user password is used to encrypt the data at some point, they have a way of decrypting it.
