  1. Ended up getting a great deal on a Supermicro 2u 826 case, two xeon e5-2640 E4 CPUs, and 384GB of DDR4 ECC memory.  Already ordered a cheap Nvidia Tesla P4 gpu to make this into a fun backup/test server.  Maybe I have a problem...

  2. Logged in this am to see I have a "One Year In" badge.  Wow I can't believe it's been one year since NBR closed down and thankfully @Recieverand @Hiewstepped up to create what eventually became NBT.  I'm excited to still get to be a part of the experience with laptops/desktops and other hardware even if I don't have near as much time as I used to.

What has the last year brought you?

For me it's been a whirlwind.  My daughter is now 2 years old and I have a 4-month-old son.  I'm getting closer to graduating from residency and being done with all of the added stressors that my program likes to add to my life. And for the first time in a long time, I've had the same laptop and desktop since I normally upgrade quite often, lol.  It's been a great albeit fast year to be certain.

Cheers to you all for making this place fun!

  3. My buddy is going to put together an unraid plex server with a 12600k + ASUS Z690-PLUS TUF Gaming WiFi D5 motherboard from MC (seems like a great value at $296 since the MB is only $50).  Memory speed really doesn't matter too much, but figured I'd ask what people recommend here. Cost is priority number 1, but if I could get him something with hynix memory I'd prefer that. I think the cheap patriot DDR5 on amazon has hynix and is around $100 for 32GB.  Any other thoughts?

That's why I want to use this system.  It fits in my printer stand like a smack in the face.  I will take a picture after of the spot it sits in.  I don't need fast,  I need Lots of storage after I am finished with a project.  Got any pics of your system?

Sure, here it is next the the server:

It's not a bad little build considering I have <$75 into it excluding the drives.

Xeon, very cool.  We upgraded our ram but still rocking the Pentium E5200 dual core.  It's just such a great and compact machine.

1 gigabit NIC to the HP MediaSmart server and works great

Well you've inspired me to pick up another Mediasmart EX495 for $50. I threw unraid on it and three 8TB drives and a 12TB in it for a backup server. I also picked up a 4GB stick of memory from ebay for $6 and a 4 core xeon CPU for $8.  Right now copying files to the server is CPU limited much more than I expected (average write speed of around 75MB/s even without parity).  The 4GB of ram helped a little, but I need to get this Xeon installed ASAP (but first I need to build a new VGA cable and am waiting for parts).  Overall a fun trip down memory lane and kind of a cool little backup server.

The only bummer is that the guy who owned the server in the past was a smoker and the thing was filthy (no where was it described this way).  I spent a good 2-3 hours scrubbing the heck out of it with rubbing alcohol.

That's why I am a writer....I can come up with gems.  ha ha!  Back when NBR was rolling good on the forum side of things, but the main page was severely lacking, I offered Charles my services to write new and engaging articles for the site.  He said that ship had sailed.  Too bad, I could have provided some great content for it.  I am currently going to be writing some new books, and other things soon and I cannot wait to get at it all.

One book is about getting refugees out of Afghanistan with the Canadian Armed forces.  There is a Veteran here with 4 or 5 books worth of personal materials, and images about how all that went down.  Another client has a lifetime of hunting and fishing stories from all over northern Canada and Alaska.  He wants me to compile them into books for him to sell.  I get paid, They get paid more!  I can even do the publishing layout and cover design etc.  A one stop shop besides actually printing the books.

I love telling stories.  I only found out about this love since starting our family travel blog about having a son with autism and how we travel and give him life experiences, and adventures. It's all I want to do now.  Tell stories about tech, family, life, and history.

I enjoyed reading your blogs about your off-roading trips with your son. If I recall correctly, you were thinking about purchasing a new off-roading vehicle at one point?

  7. I do love to see old members returning to this forum for sure.  I wish Spartan would joint back up, but I don't know if that'll happen.  I love having a bunch of different view points and knowledge sets.  I know @kojackand I had numerous pages of back and forth with our disagreements, but I always respected his view points even if I disagreed with them, lol.  Good to see you back.

  8. Hah it's most certainly cheaper for me than my auto hobbies.  My handle comes from a fox-body mustang that I dumped way too much money into. After that I moved on the Subaru STIs and then on to trucks (although I really miss my 2007 STI limited).  When I have less money I typically work on PCs (or when it's cold out, lol) and if I happen to have a decent bonus it used to go to cars...

  9. Ended up buying a few things for the server:

4x10TB HGST SAS HDDs to run as parity drives

2x800GB MLC HGST SAS3 SSDs (with 15PB endurance) for write cache

Unraid Pro when it was on sale

Looks like I'll be putting together an unRaid server with a mixture of ZFS to better protect data.  I think the next upgrade for the server will be a Intel W680 or similar setup so I can run EEC DDR5, but that will be down the road.

The HP Mediasmart server rocks.  Its 12+ yrs old now   It's been running 24/7/365 for 12 yrs.  I've had to replace it's PSU this year when the original finally died.

We added a little dongle a long time ago to the motherboard for VGA output so we can get into it's BIOS.  It has Linux on it since 2013 and I just updated it a few months ago from Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3 (which it had been on since 2013) to OEL 7.9.  It is acting as an additional backup repository.  The OS is on the HP's Disk 1 and the other 3 hotswap trays are 4TB HDDs for full/incremental backups of my physical machines (entire laptop partitions and the other minitower's boot device).

The supermicro minitower is the other backup repo for nightly VM backups and also for backing up the HP Mediasmart boot device.

yep I built the vga output dongle as well to make things easier.  It was a great little build, I regret selling it because it would be a nice little backup box.

*on edit* I also forgot I upgraded the cpu to a quad core Xeon and added a whopping 4gb of ram to mine, lol.

True. But the soldered RAM will still run dual-channel, and the other one single channel, right? I don't think (or well, I hope - haven't really tested it, or read too much about it either) the performance hit will not be that big.

It will run on dual channel memory for the first 16GB (assuming 8GB soldered) and then for the amount thereafter it will run single channel.

    Example:
8GB soldered + 16GB in the ram slot = first 16GB in dual channel and last 8GB in single channel.

It really depends on how much ram people utilize if asynchronous memory will be an issue or not.  For most people it's not an issue because they don't often use 16+GB of ram anyway.
