  1. I recently acquired a 2024 Asus G14 as my 2020 G14 has been folding itself in half since it got crushed in my accident (it's gotten really bad now). I know I've said I hate Asus with all of my guts, but this particular laptop popped up for super, super cheap all because the glass over the screen has a hardly noticeable hairline crack in it... and I just like the form factor of the G14 from a mobile x86 device standpoint . Yet again, I can safely say I've never purchased a brand new laptop lol.

I'll be making a write up on it shortly because it's a strange device and the way mobile processors and GPUs work now is very confusing from a tuning standpoint. There are too many moving targets now, and I don't know how to hit all of them yet, but I know given enough time and insight that I'll be able to hit all of them. The learning process has been quite fun.

The bloat was horrific though. Luckily it is saved by G-Helper, which is also another factor of why I wasn't entirely opposed to getting another Asus device. Getting rid of the cancer is tough, but once you eliminate it, you never have to look back with G-Helper.

I was able to break some HWbot records that I saw over there, so here soon I'll go and steal the (hopefully) entire leaderboard for the 8945hs. I also plan on 3D-printing a case for the 2020 G14 to turn it into a portable desktop for a family member. Once I do that, I plan on stealing the leaderboard for the 4800hs. Luckily there's a lot of crazy software out there to torture the mobile Zen 2 CPUs.

    Rant:

    Spoiler

All I want is a 14-15 inch laptop with a moderate APU, an adequate cooling system, a large battery, and some sense of sturdyness. If it must be an an inch and a half thick to cool well or to fit a massive battery or to be sturdy, I could care less about the thickness. I personally think this is doable but with hardware sucking right now and the massive influence Apple has with their Macbooks, I doubt this will ever happen. The closest thing we have is an Asus TUF A14 that isn't even out yet, will probably cost an arm and a leg, might not cool well (but after seeing the cooling solution, I think it has some potential), and isn't very physically sturdy.

It blows my mind how APUs haven't blown up yet. It's a no-brainer in a xx50/60 class laptop. I was hoping framework would do something, but I have little faith in them. They seem to content with making a 13" ultraportable/repairable laptop, however, the ultimate enemy of this combination is cooling and sturdiness🤦‍♂️. I've also been given the chance to interact with both a 13 and 16 and they DO NOT feel like sturdy, well built devices. Especially the 16 with its stupid modular keyboard tabs. They also seem slow to solve hardware issues and their BIOSes are quite trash like every other modern laptop, though, I'll cut them some slack here as they are still a smaller company.

I could rant on and on about framework. I respect what they're trying to do, but in my eyes, they fall short of being viable every time and are just, disillusioned a lot of the time. To be honest, I don't really care about paying a significant amount more than a standard OEM laptop just to have some cute, customizable thin laptop that allows me to "upgrade" (pay nearly or over half the price of a full device just to get a newer CPU with a terrible cooling solution + iffy firmware) whenever I want. I just want a device that is sturdy, doesn't boil the processors inside, and ideally, that could be easily taken apart.

They already have the hard part (repairability) taken care of, but in my mind, why in the hell would you ever try to put something that is meant to be highly repairable in a THIN DEVICE (???????). Those two things oppose each other. There's a reason (not the only one but that's another conversation) that laptops had their modular parts stripped out in the first place... TO REDUCE SIZE. If I want a thin, modular device, I do not care if it is modular and whatnot. When you make a thin, modular device, you do so at the cost of EVERYTHING ELSE. To me, that cost is not, and will not EVER be worth it.

Lastly, the kind of people I've interacted with at university who have framework devices are CS majors who could care less about hardware and like the frameworks because of "what they stand for", the bit of added "quirkiness" having a framework gives you, and because there is slightly better linux support for them than any other laptop on the market. We (the people on this forum) share some common ground with these guys, but it seems framework's view is more aligned with those guys than it is with us.

Maybe at some point I'll make a video or something to better explain this situation. It is impossible for me to effectively convey my thoughts via written language lol.

  2. I (unknowingly) ran incorrect thermal pads for a few months on my MSI 1070 and bent the snot out of it in the VRM area at the top. It still ran fine, but it's not ideal. If you just need to test it, you should be fine, but for long term use I'd try to tighten down the heatsink without any pads and use a pair of calipers to get a rough estimate on proper sizing.

You want to run a little thicker on thermal pads, but not too thick as to bend the card. Running bent long term will make it keep its bent shape which also isn't ideal.

Is that a cichichen (however his name is spelled, can't remember) for a 17inch or 18inch Alienware?

Nice to see you again. How are you doing?

Thanks for asking. I'm doing a lot better. I finished the semester out at school with good enough grades and have been able to walk normally for about a month now. From Feb to the end of May I felt as I was in limbo, waiting to fully heal and waiting for the semester to end and the summer to begin so I can get back on a normal routine. Now that I've established a routine and have a summer job, things are essentially back to normal.

I get knee and ankle pain from time to time, which I'll likely have to live with, but I'm hoping that once I start working out (which will start tomorrow) that I can minimize problems related from the accident and surgery. Even though the situation has been frustrating and annoying, I realize I'm very lucky to be in the position to even think about everything, so I don't let it bother me too much.

I've been mostly MIA here due to a lack of interesting things going on with technology and just being busy with life. I was 14 when I made my "Upgrading my Ranger" post over on NBR. I had lots of time to toy around with stuff and learn, which was awesome, but now there are no more "new" laptops to modify and tinker with and I am now older and have a lot more on my plate. The knowledge I've gained from that time will stick with me forever, and I'm very grateful to have learned all I did from you guys. I still have plans to do some stupid stuff to my 4930mx and to rig up a CF-31 to my Thunderbird to interface with the ECU, but those things will happen in the future.

I suppose this is strange to say, but my P870TM carried me through my entire recovery. Whether it was doing schoolwork, playing games and chatting with university friends who were off at co-ops whenever I could, or being driven to New Orleans with some friends to visit a close buddy and playing UT99 via LAN until the sun came up, it did its job with no issues and while not boiling my lap, which was nice as I was mostly bed-ridden for a month after my surgery. I find it rather disappointing that it's one of the best computers I've ever used and that nothing will ever really match it. I will use that thing until it sees the day where modern software won't support any aspect of it. Thanks @Prema

I finally got my refund from Amazon for the disappointing garbage 9950X3D bottomfeeder silicon sample that I returned. Two weeks is a long time to wait on a $750 refund. But, a better way to buy is coming soon. I can hardly wait.

What are those weird drivers you had to uninstall

It's been a very long time, but I think it was some other Clevo drivers that were on my machine alongside some random drivers since the OS was originally installed and used on another computer.

I personally use RLECviewer as it gets the job done, but the UI can be a bit janky and it can sometimes force the fans to 100% for a few seconds. It allows me to control all 3 fans though.

  6. Due to some recent circumstances, I might be needing to get a new laptop as my G14 has likely been crushed. Has anyone here played with the framework laptops? I've always wanted one, but could never justify getting one until my G14 gives out, which i'm pretty certain it has. I'll figure that out in a few hours though.

But yeah, I am not sure if anyone here has one, but if so, could you give me your thoughts about it? Doesn't matter if it's the 13 or 16 inch one as they are built similarly. I know you guys are the most picky with your tech, just like me, so I trust your guys's judgements a lot more than most "reviewers."

  7. Hey fellas, this is a less ideal post that will go down in my catalog, but i think it ought to be discussed. Some touchier topics will be discussed, so if you would rather not peer into my personal life, I completely get it.

I will edit this with a spoiler here at some point, but I cannot figure out how to add one on mobile. My appologies.

Last night, on Febuary 6th, 2025, I was leaving a laboratory at my university. There's a sketchy road I must always cross by foot to get to my apartment, and while I thought I could make it, the impatience of man taught me a valuable lesson at a terrible time; Man does NOT win against automobile. The speed limit was 35mph on that road, and the driver did not see me. Luckily, he had an old, intelligently engineered car (a late 90s - early 2000s Chevrolet Cavalier I believe), so I ended up rolling over and on top of the car. I was blessed with some wonderful bystanders, and with the remorse of the driver.

I was carried away on an ambulance and to a hospital that is essentially on the campus of my university. I remember it all clearly, and I've been given every drug known to man it seems. The medical staff here and every gear in this machine has done phenomenal work, and I appreciate every person who has helped me along the way. Luckily, my head and spine are fine, and the only thing that needs repairs is my right leg, where my tibia shattered into multiple pieces. I'm only 18, and I will have to live with a titanium rod in my right leg for the rest of my life...

I'm not inherently a funny individual as I tend to be serious and practical, but during this whole situation, I have tried my absolute hardest to keep my family and friends from stressing all too much. There were times last night and today where I had managed to knock all of the air out of someone's stomach, and successfully bringing light to such a dark situation.

It's a really strange time, and my outlook hasn't changed much. I must keep rolling with the punches and focus on the good instead of the bad. I type this from a hospital bed, expecting a somewhat speedy, but life changing recovery. I don't write this out for any of you to pity me. As a matter of fact, the best thing you all can do is read this as a lesson, and NOT worry about me. I know I'll be fine, so you all spend your energy doing what you guys do best, I hate to be an obstacle in everyone's seemingly jam-packed lives.

However, I want this to be a message to you all to keep pushing to be the best person you can. This might sound a bit grim and edgy, but that is not my intent. I also realize it may sound like I am struggling with life, but I want you all to know that, even in my worst times, I have never had a desire to give up. I'm still learning and growing, but right now, I am a man who fears death in its entirety, and want nothing to do with it.

As bad as things seem to get, there is always a future, and while it may be impossible to see the light at the end of the tunnel, light will always welcome you. It's up to you to have faith in the light, even though you may never see it.

Take care of yourselves fellas and keep working to do your magic! Without you all, my life would be so different that I couldn't even fathom explaining it. You guys have enlightened me to some of my greatest passions, and I cannot thank you all enough!

I'm usually one to stay anonymous, but I think now is an appropriate time to quit. I might still be naive, who knows, but you guys are either good people, or really good at convincing me the you're not ill-intented. I guess I'll never know!

  8. As I typically do, I have been lurking here, and many of you don't seem too happy with the state of technology right now, which I agree with very much. While it will be a LONG ways out, mark my words when I say I will eventually cobble together some motherboard(s) that gives complete control over the pre-BGA mobile chips, so everyone here can do their magic and dominate the HWbot leaderboards.

I'm already a third of the way done getting my undergrad as a EE with the intent to get a masters degree. I will try as hard as possible to make this happen, and if it doesn't then I will know that my education has failed me or I have failed myself.

Thought I would share this with all of you to give a little bit of hope during a time where things seem so bleak. It might be a while, but I'll eventually figure it out 🙂

I first tried this on an RTX 3080 board. Unfortunately, the reballing from the seller was faulty and several solder balls detached from the core when soldering to the card, which was visible after removing the core from the card. The core required a reball, but the 3080 pcb died after 2nd core solder cleaning. You can see the power/ground routing got very exposed in the middle. I tried resoldering the core on anyway but it shorted.

    3080dead.thumb.jpg.0b827ed151214e1cb9e3310ad89d0425.jpg

This is the 3060 in-progress next to the 3080 prior to removing the 3080Ti core:

As for future mods I do hope to fix the vRAM clocking and finish upgrading the chips for 16GB. Currently only 3/8 chips are 2GB.

In theory a 30 series pcb can take a 40 series core. They are electrically compatible, but my viewpoint is finding a vBIOS that would take that mod is almost certainly impossible. The 3080Ti mod only works with an Eluktronics vBIOS. All other vBIOS fail, including Clevo. Someone briefly listed an MXM clevo 3080Ti for sale on Ebay and Prema somehow identified it as having an Eluktronics vBIOS from the GPU-Z screenshot, which was extremely helpful.

Nice work my brother. Does the PCIe adapter card work with the 30 series GPUs? I would assume so, but I don't think anyone has ever tested it lol.

  10. 1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe

Drove 6 hours north to Indiana to meet the seller, and all was what I expected. A bit of rust, but enough to be manageable by sanding or a bit of welding, 140k miles, 5 speed manual, and the interior was in great condition. It needs a lot of love, but that will all happen this summer.

People sleep on these, they are what I like to call Ford's Icarus. They flew too close to the sun (mustang :classic_angry:), and the Thunderbird lost its wings... 190hp from a 2.3l 4 banger with a sub-par turbo (that had its boost limited!!!) compared to the 225hp of the 5.0l v8 in the mustang? You'd be out of your mind to go for the 5.0...

It is awesome to see that kind of performance jump. Anyone that doesn't like that is either lying or stupid.

Speaking of stupidity, I think one of AMD's biggest challenges is the mentality of some of their customers. Like this one... That is detrimental to all concerned, include those that don't care but are too dumb to know better.

    image.png

I think it is inconclusive to judge this man on his statement. He does not specify if he cares about overclocking existing.

Here's an example. I dislike EV's, they are conceptually very interesting, but I believe that they aren't much better than ICE vehicles in anything, and are just generally pricey. However, as much as I dislike EV's, if all EV's were to get banned, I would be upset because there are people that care about them/like them, and for them to have what they enjoy taken is unfair in my opinion.

I think it is reasonable to state that one does not care about overclocking, while I disagree with the statement, JohN, in this instance, is just stating how he feels. Never does he mention his thoughts on if OC is something that should be available for all consumers. If he had noted that overclocking is dumb and no one should do it or be able to do it, then I think it would be fair to argue against his point and try to show him why his thinking is flawed.

Now, I do see why this looks bad. Any AMD exec could read this and assume that because JohN does not care about OC, that his statement is implying that he would be impartial or happy if OC on AMD processors was permanently disabled. I believe that, in this scenario, the person to blame is the one making an assumption—in this case, the imaginary AMD exec—as that assumption could have been easily avoided with more inquiry into JohN's thoughts on OC, particularly whether he believes it should exist at all. If I were JohN, and the aforementioned assumption was made, I would be displeased because I would feel that the AMD exec took what I said completely out of context.

I'm not trying to start an argument or get political here, I just disagree with judging this man on his statement. If @Mr. Fox or anyone else disagrees with me, we can agree to disagree. One of the best things that is hard to acknowledge sometimes is that we are blessed enough to live in a society where we can freely agree and disagree without facing any kind of persecution.

  12. Anyone here know any tools or custom vBIOSes for the 2070 Super to increase its TDP? I've tried damn near everything to increase the TDP and can't get anything to work. I have:

    1. Used Ampere Bios Editor and Mobile Pascal TDP tweaker to adjust the TDP of my card's vBIOS.
    2. Unsuccessfully software flashed above vBIOSes using nvflashk and many nvflash derivatives.
    3. Unsuccessfully hardware flashed above vBIOSes (black screen, unknowing if POST, was able to max fans via FN+1)

    4. Unsuccessfully hardware flashed multiple desktop 2070 Super vBIOSes
    5. Unsuccessfully Compared differing 2070 Super mobile vBIOSes to find where in the ROM power limits are stored.

Are there any dedicated Turing custom vBIOS tools or specially modified and signed vBIOSes floating around? I'm a bit displeased with the low stock TDP of this card as I know it is capable of matching a desktop 2070 Super.

I love how easy Nvidia has made it to do whatever I want to a product I own, it really does fill me with joy...

  13. I'm hoping there's a definitive answer here (even if it's just a no), but I've started to become frustrated with my 4070 Super as even though I have a 350w Gigabyte vBIOS on my ASUS Dual card, it can never fully stretch its legs as it's voltage limited at 1.1200v. I know Lovelace is voltage limited, but is there some tool to modify the vBIOS or something in order to elevate the voltage?

I'm getting frustrated as whenever I look into this, I just get spammed with reddit threads on r/overclocking and r/nvidia of people going crazy because, "The RTX 4070 Super is so good for undervolting!!!!!" My response is ???????

    A. Why the hell would you want to undervolt a desktop GPU unless you're in like, some European country where electricity costs an arm and a leg? If the electricity costs that much, I don't think gaming should be a top priority...
    B. I don't understand why some people are ecstatic to lower (I know it's slight, but hear me out) the performance of their GPU. These tend to be the same people who whine and complain about how Nvidia is an evil company and how bad GPU pricing has been over the past few years. The whole purpose of overclocking is to squeeze as much performance out of technology without increasing the price of what you have. I have no idea why these people are doing the opposite and making their own situation worse while creating more justification to complain and whine.

    C. While most of the threads I've seen are on r/nvidia, there are a few on r/overclocking. Why are threads about undervolting allowed on r/overclocking???????? These two things are like, polar opposites.
    D. Why can't I easily find someone who has had the same problem as me? I think the fact that I can't find anything shows how rotted out many are nowadays. I really hope it's just a vocal minority, but I feel that while many people know about technology and how to build a computer, they know nothing about fine-tuning the parts that "they know are good" and spent lots of money on. What good is your "fast" car if the tune is terrible? Ask any car guy that question and they will tell you what you have is garbage.

The reason I lurk here is because you all understand the value of fine-tuning a system, but more importantly, none of you gatekeep the knowledge and experience you've acquired over the years. I owe it to the people here to where I am now, if I never received the help I did nearly four years ago, then I don't know where I would be now.

    I'll quit ranting now.

CPUPower-GUI is what I use for CPU clock control and power profile management. Try installing it from the Zorin software center first. You can install it from the .deb file on Github as a last resort if it is not available in the software center. Linux tries to force the CPU to use minimal power rather than balls-to-the-wall performance, which is annoying if you do not override the default settings.

    https://github.com/vagnum08/cpupower-gui/releases/tag/v1.0.0

If it does not work you have have to install pyxdg and libhandy if they are not already installed. If you need to, probably won't need to do more than sudo apt update, then sudo apt install pyxdg and sudo apt install libhandy from a terminal.

CPU-X is basically the Linux equivalent of CPU-Z. GreenWithEnvy will allow GPU core and memory overclocking.

I need to look into CPUPower-GUI, I've been setting up Gentoo over the past 2 weeks. It has been hell, but I've learned a lot. I'm still in a terminal trying to setup Xorg as I've been troubleshooting the Nvidia drivers for the past few days... I see why Linus Torvalds hates Nvidia so much lol.

Gentoo has been pretty good about utilizing my CPU to the fullest, I've been using some generic terminal based CPU monitoring tool and compiling anything makes full use of my CPU (It seems to boost when it should and doesn't spike like in Windows). I wonder if the minimal CPU power is coming from some default setting in Kubuntu or something.

Looks like Intel gets some uplift in spots, but overall this is shaping up to be a monster win for AMD gaming. Those are some insane uplifts in pockets and an overall 10% on average uplift with no regression in performance elsewhere.

BS about 9000 vs 7000 aside (shame AMD), this is shaping up to be a rather juicy update and looking forward to the overall Intel v AMD gaming suite comparisons.

Am still on Win10 21H2. I hope this performance hitch is only in newer Win11 versions. I refuse to move forward with this already garbage OS!

I've been reinstalling Windows all day today on my G14 because once it connects to the internet, it auto-installs all of ASUS's bloat and garbage... I have to install everything I need offline and then disable a bunch of stuff within Windows before I can connect to the internet "safely." And this is still 21H2. What a catastrophe... ASUS and Microsoft are never seeing a dollar from me ever again. Too much hassle.

I know people here have advised me against it, but I will be trying Gentoo within the next couple of days on my desktop. My goal is to move over as fast as possible as I'm sick of Windows. I've got friends who can assist me, and a lot more free time than I thought I would have here at University, so I am hoping to be proficient with it before the school year ends.

  16. Anyone here know the wattage of the 2070 Supers that shipped in these laptops? I am using one in my P870TM and can only get it to pull 115 watts... Something in my mind said 150w like the 2080 non-super, but I could be wrong.

If the power limit is really 115, is there a tool to up said power limit?

  17. Just going to post this here as I know many here have dealt with this heatsink.

I'm modifying my P870TM heatsink to accommodate a 2070 Super. I'm currently solder pasting some shims on to cover the VRAM. This heatsink is an ANIMAL. I cannot get my 138c solder paste to melt. A buddy and I have held a 1500w and 600w heat gun right up to the shims for 20+ minutes and the paste will not melt fully. While Clevo doesn't have the greatest track record with heatsinks, this thing is insane, and I must give them credit.

I'm kind of stuck on what to do because I don't think I can get the shims soldered on using the paste...
(Don't question the alcohol, it was the best thing we had nearby to prop up the heatsink, none was consumed.)

Remember, that new nicely binned 11900K that I sold you came from Walmart.

So, I procrastinated about doing this for months now. I finally just did it to get it over with. It actually works quite well. At the lowest speed it is quieter than the nine 120mm fans it replaced. When I dismantled the radiator to remove all of the 120mm fans, I used a thick foam weatherstrip to seal the 4 sides of the radiator against the housing so that the air being forced in could not escape anywhere except through the radiator. I have a window screen (with an aluminum frame) that I made. It is sandwiched between the plywood and radiator housing to catch dust and lint. I can take the fan off with the four thumb nuts to remove the screen for cleaning.

    IMG-20240726-175127.jpg

Crazy timing. I've had to wire a few of these exact fans up for my buddy's V8 swapped S10. How much better is this single fan compared to the many smaller fans? These fans can move A LOT of air, but they seem to be a bit noisy. At full speed, is it louder than the old setup?

NICE, I was hoping 9700x would be 300. I am a happy man now. 7600x will be on the marketplace very soon ;)
