Didn't really need much time to turn into a flying toaster. If a laptop is doing that, I think there's something wrong with the clock settings for the very simple interface framework used in BIOS. At least I don't have it with my 12900H Razer. I will check my wife's XPS17 with 12900HK (both RB and XPS have PTM7950).

Using AI / neural networks for such an uncomplicated control problem is a failed attempt, and I don't understand why anyone would do that other than for advertising reasons. And as you said, if they would give the user a simple tweaking option and let the rest to be handled by the thermal throttling, all would be fine. The problem is, the laptop gets hot even during BIOS settings and fans ramp up, so they have bigger problems there, and that clearly is against the "workstations need to be on the safe side, that is why they downtune it" argument.

I guess I give up for now for a single (laptop) only solution. We are just not there yet. I had my 3960X PC "workstation" ready for sale, but I changed my mind. Applied some big patch of PTM7950 on the Threadripper CPU and with a simple Noctua cooler and I get max 75°C @ 280W as it crunches the CB23 for a ~35000 score. That is without any undervolting and further tweaking and headache, with other tasks running in the foreground. I will just use a remote desktop with a simpler laptop when I am around the house. Wake me up when we have 3nm CPUs and GPUs...

I think the problem is mainly for us, individual users. Dell most probably does bulk sales to companies that don't really care much about upgrading at some point, if it is CAMM or not. They don't care about squeezing the last bit of cycles out of it via undervolting or repasting. They just want a machine with X amount of memory, Y anount of disk space and most importantly good service options. They don't care about benchmarks or if you can play games on them.

The last generation of workstations are just underwhelming. Dell lacks proper tuning and vapor chamber, Lenovo lacks the extra nvme slots and HP lacks proper thermal tuning. The displays are also fail: Dell is 17" but 16:9, the others are 16:10 but 16". I sent the HP Fury G9 back due to constantly running fans (I think it was better in the beginning), and I hate sending stuff back. So silly. That thing has a vapor chamber inside with bulky fans. It is a new design, so do it right this time! If it is the thermal paste, use the best one, like Lenovo. You are charging kidney money for them. But no... Don't they learn anything from the gamestations? Maybe they are afraid of having battery bloats with all metal case (like Razer), but then compromise and build real workstations, not half cooked posers.

Looks like this laptop is going back. The fans are running constantly, even during startup and BIOS settings, and it gets really warm. Reverted all the BIOS options back to factory settings and still nothing. The BIOS diagnostics SW show >2200 rpm while basically doing nothing. Also under Linux I somehow could not enable the full performance mode. Dell laptops, for example, have some SMBios utilities to adjust the thermal / performance characteristics but I couldn't find anything for HP changing that. Setting the governer to performance, adjusting via cpufreq doesn't help.

Yes, but that is the if you are able to read or want to read the BIOS (matching ME Tools version) image. The method you posted works if you can do that and I was able to unlock other laptops with this method easily. But I am not sure when the matching tools will come, thus I was trying to use the image I had from the update package. What I was trying was using the BIOS update image without using the ME Tools. The problem you mentioned, not being able to update the variables is the second issue, also with the G9. If I update something, even if I read it back as the modified value, it reverts back to the original after exiting the grub. I tried disabling all the security features in the BIOS menus but didn't help.

Looks like UV unlocking the HP / InsydeH2O BIOS is a PITA. I have been reading the forums, trying H2OUVE etc. with no success. Interestingly I haven't so far seen any unlocking thread anywhere for recent 11th or 12th gen ZBook laptops.

Pushing the power to 110/95 I was able to see 20500 but the CPU stays around 98 degrees. I think it definitely needs undervolting and possibly PTM7950. I don't want to repaste if I am not sure that it is staying. There's a German language review of P16 on YT and apparently P16 does 22900 out of the box with the same CPU. Lenovo uses PTM7950 so that might be one factor. I tried something...hmmm...silly. I have seen that the CpuSetup contents of Razer Blade looks similar, so I "took my chance" and modified the same location and interestingly it went back to 1 after exiting. Maybe there's a mechanism that checks the important locations and reverts them back?

By the way, the BIOS image is available for download on the HP website here and can be extracted via UniExtract and can be loaded with UEFITool, but I could not find anything to do with overclocking lock etc. Could it be that it is named differently?

Not just this or a specific laptop but I highly recommend installing a pair of these to improve both the thermals and the fan noise for any laptop. https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B08G8K32TR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So...mine has arrived. First thing, I disabled the core isolation, disabled the iGPU, downloaded CB23 and Timespy, installed AMD drivers for 6950 XT eGPU and ran some basic test. Performance: Initial impressions are rather underwhelming as the first run of CB23 was around 19400 and for 10 mins it fell down to 17000 - which are considerably lower than the 12800HX version @1610ftw reporterd previously. I set the priority to above normal for CB23 but didn't change the result. I couldn't find any HP performance boost application, so I assume the Windows power settings for best performance is enough. I didn't check the temperatures / power yet. Hopefully this evening... eGPU: Although I was hoping for a different result, eGPU performance seems to be also lower than the 12900H. I was able to get around 15800 with 6950XT on RB17, with FG9 I am getting something around 14800. I will try the 3090 sometime this week. Any recommendations for performance tweaking specific to this model, other than repasting with PTM7950? EDIT: CPU package power is initially around 95W @ 91°C and sustained power drops down to 70W @ 75°C in the long run. Of course, core power is 10W below that even with the iGPU disabled. I guess because the dGPU is a beefier one, they chopped down the CPU power. EDIT: OK, PL is not locked and I was able to push the limit higher. We need undervolting, though...

Wooaahh! 😳 Reminds me of the first generation mobile phones.

Sure, we should do that. I was also between the two and I strongly prefer the 2560x1600 over both 4K and FHD, but in the end 4 nvme slots won me over. I got the update that it will be delivered on Monday, so the first CB23 and Timespy results will be here on Monday evening.

It is A3000. I actually didn't choose it (@1610ftw also mentioned that vapor chamber is available only for A3000 and up). It is a preconfigured machine and there is no 4K+12950HX machine with a GPU less than A3000. By the way, as the GPU board is replaceable I wonder if HP would release other GPU boards or if the future GPU boards for next generations will be compatible with the G9.

Oh, well. I went with the Fury G9 with 12950HX and 4K display. Hopefully will arrive next week Tuesday / Wednesday. I am super excited. The reason I chose it over P16 is that it has 4 nvme slots and less gamer flair. At last I can try the eGPU with an HX processor myself. 😁

I actually already have the current generation maxed out Razer Blade 17 and I would like to move away from it. I think it is a very good laptop "when it works". I bought it mainly for work and then I had an RMA case which took like 6-7 weeks, which is not good at all if it is a work laptop. So I would like to sell mine and switch to a Dell/HP/Lenovo laptop which has proper support and service.

Because of the thermals, I will go either for HP Fury G9 (most probably) or Lenovo P16. Fury has vapor chamber with good performance, 4 nvme slots and quite a good configuration. Only problem is in Germany I cannot have a display other than 1920x1200, and many of the configuration options HP has in the US is not available here. Also the prices are around 20% more expensive. I found one with 4K (though I much prefer 2560x1600) a big IT company is selling preconfigured but it has A3000 on it which I don't need. Then there is P16 which has 2 nvme slots instead of 4 but it has the configuration I prefer: 12950hx + a simple A1000 and 2560x1600 screen. It is also cheaper. So I am trying to decide now... Thanks, I will grab one. I think the Fury G9 will be a good option here, though it does not have a door under it like the P16. Yesterday I bought an 6950XT card as the prices went low (an I had some eBay points I could spend) and I am sure it is 7900 cards will cost at least 40-50% more. I think I will skip the next generation cards, as I am gaming 2-3 times a year (one game from start to the end) and I am not picky about if it is 80 fps or 160 fps with full RT.

I was able to achieve around 16500 using 3090 + TB and 12900H Razer Blade. Although I like the idea of direct PCIe connection, being able to safely and easily plug/unplug while the computer is running is something prefer over a performance jump. I am not planning to get a 4090 or anything, so I can live with this performance for now - though I am dying to try it. 😛

I am still swinging between this and HP Fury G9...

Looks like there is now 16.0 and 16.1 mentioned in the comments, but I don't know if it helps. I am kind of new to the topic and looks like it now works with RB17 2022 which has version 16.0. EDIT: OK, I didn't know that it has to be the exact version.
