Clevo N960Kx (N960KR) Thread - BIOS Unlock, cooling mods, etc.
kaz26 replied to kaz26's topic in Sager & Clevo
You are probably right with this statement @blackrtx88. It seems that the plastic melted, which caused the resistance to go up, leading to more heat and more melting. Since my backup laptop (P750DM-g w/6700k and quadro p4200) is not capable of handling the size and complexity of my current job, I need to get this N960KR back up and running ASAP, so I ordered the direct replacement part for simplicity. If the new plug can last even a few months before failing again, that will be fine. I haven't been running the CPU undervolted, so I will do that and also reduce the turbo speed. I don't need the CPU to run at max for the work I do. I have a feeling that the plug itself does not have a large enough diameter circuitry to handle the power I am pulling through it. As a result, it overheated and failed prematurely. When you compare this plug to the plug of more powerful Clevo laptops, it can be seen that there is only one thick gauge central B+ wire compared to the two B+ and two Negative thick gauge wires of the Clevo P750tm1 that was designed for much higher current. In the future, I might replace this plug with a Clevo 4 pin DC jack. It won't be a simply replacement though and I need this replacement to be simple. Once I get a proper secondary laptop that can handle my workload, I will continue modding this one. This laptop has some decent potential, but simply wasn't designed to handle more than 230W of power running through it. _ _ _ _ _ TLDR: I ordered a direct replacement part from the zon and it should arrive on April 9. I will document the replacement process and post it here. From what I have read, the board needs to be heated with hot air, and while the hot air is on the part, it can then be soldered with an iron. If this new part also fails, I will then replace it with a 4-pin Clevo jack, or other high current design. -

I have encountered a new problem with this laptop. The DC jack connected to the motherboard is failing. It melted the plug that connects to it as well as the plastic case around it. I'm not sure what the cause of the failure is. Perhaps it wasn't designed to handle the amount of current that is running through it. I am currently working on a rather large 3D design project and regularly reach 280W which is 14.35A current at 19.5v. I'm going to try and find a jack that can handle at least 20A. I might need to also get a different power supply for that. If anyone has advice on this situation, I will greatly appreciate it. -

The vBIOS (version: 94.04.3F.00.83) can used can be downloaded directly from the following link. This is the vBIOS I am currently using. It was an improvement over the stock vBIOS. * Flash with NVFLASH ver. 5.792.0 using the --protectoff command. hhttps://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/231706/Clevo.RTX3070.8192.210104.rom Note to mods: I'm not sure what the rules or etiquette are for posting links here. If I'm doing something wrong, just let me know and I will be sure to not do it again. I am not trying to be a rule breaker. -

That's interesting. I personally don't mess with the settings other than lettings windows decide and I haven't had any issues for the work I do. I'm not really a gamer anymore, though I've been thinking about making a car racing simulator and getting into that. I will probably get a desktop pc for that though. This seems to be a popular platform in asia and Russia. Please post new info here if you find something good @Snoopk88 -

@Snoopk88 To undervolt the GPU with MSI Afterburner you need to use the curve editor. There is a good article on it found here: DigitalTrends.com How to Undervolt GPU with MSI Afterburner -

For those who want the igpu disabled, there are three options, two methods are with software, and one method is hardware: * * * NOTE: I have not tried disabling the igpu in Device manager, it might be a good idea to select the NVIDIA GPU in NVIDIA control panel first. * * * 1.) Using NVIDIA Control Panel: Type NVIDIA Control Panel into the windows search in the task bar and select it. Select "Manage 3D Settings" and then select the preferred GPU to use for programs. You can also select which GPU to use for certain programs. See image 1 for example. 2.) Using Device Manager: Right-click the windows icon in the task bar, select device manager, then select the drop-down menu for Display adapters, right-click on the UHD graphics and disable it. See image 2 for example. - - - - - Hardware method - - - - - 3.) To ensure that the iGPU will not ever be used, this third method requires buying a CPU that simply does not have one. These are the F series Intel CPUs, such as 10700F, 11700F, or even 11900KF which is unlocked, but without the iGPU. -

@Faldi What settings did you change when the screen blanked out? Undervolting the CPU was one of the reasons I unlocked my BIOS, but I have not messed with the overlocking since I recovered my BIOS. It was running fine until I started messing with the RAM timings. I am not sure what is causing the BIOS to act this way and I would really like to know. In a few weeks I will have more time to mess around with the system again and I might try to figure out what's happening. If anyone else can figure it out in the meantime, it would be great. -

The CPU would sometimes run optimally, but sometimes it wouldn't, despite all the settings being the same. I would check it using the CPU-z benchmark, but confirmed it with HWMonitor and Geekbench 5 as well. Recently, however, it has started doing this in BIOS ver. 1.07.13, so I no longer attribute this issue with the BIOS. If anyone has suggestions for why this might be happening, I would really like to hear it. Also, sometimes the CPU suddenly behaves like it thinks it's on battery power. There might be circuit problems on this motherboard that were actually to blame for the BIOS corruption. I don't really have the time right now to check all the components and such. In the meantime, if anyone knows where to find the BIOS version 1.07.16 with EC 1.07.07, I would appreciate a link to it. -

@pypy102 I was running 1.07.14 for those benchmarks, but have since backed down to 1.07.13 because of some instability issues. I'm not sure it's due to the BIOS, but the system seems to run better in version 1.07.13. I am far better with hardware than I am with software, though I am always trying to learn and improve. That's why I'm here. After my BIOS went down, I have been hesitant to mess with it, atleast for now. I plan to get a backup laptop and once I do, I will start to work on improving this one some more. I saw one person on the web talking about the existence of BIOS ver. 1.07.16 and EC 1.07.07, but I haven't found it yet. -

Ya, stock GPU and disabled CPU turbo. 6744 was with +200 base clock and +550 mem. It doesn't show in GPU-z because I wasn't thinking and closed NVIDIA Inspector before opening GPU-z. -

Here's another run I just did. I had turbo boost disabled on the 6400 run. Even on this run the max temp is only 75C, but I don't really want to push it too hard until I get a backup laptop. -

I did a Superposition benchmark run just now using with the new 330w brick and got a score of 6400. It's entirely possible that the BIOS was messed up by the stock power supply that was shutting off during intense usage situations. It must have an internal fuse since it would work again after unplugging and replugging it back in. With the new power adapter the wattage got up to 277.6W and did not shut off. Considering that the stock adapter is rated at 230W, the 330W adapter is definitely necessary for the work I do on this machine, especially the larger projects. -

The bad RAM was the Mushkin Redline 3200MHz, I am not using it. I am using a set of Kingston Fury 3200MHz now, but when I first started it after flashing the backup BIOS I was using a set of G.Skill 3200MHz. It was suggested to use the same RAM and such that I had in when I backed up the BIOS and that's what I did. The RAM may have had nothing to do with the BIOS getting messed up, however, a week prior when I ran the Resline it caused a BSOD and errors in the Windows 11 OS. The 330w power adapter arrived and I will run some new benchmarks with it soon -

I managed to resolve the problem by programming the chip externally using an adapter. I will post a pic of the adapter I made using pogo pins, pcb and epoxy. I created a mold with plumbers epoxy between the two pcbs and filled it with epoxy, then soldered ethernet wires to it and also to pins that I connected to another adapter that plugged into the TL866ii plus programmer. I also ordered an adapter, but I was tired of waiting for it to get here as it says the eta is March 17. Before programming the BIOS, I read it and saved the file. If anyone wants to view the saved file, I will share it in DM. I wouldn't want someone to flash that file by accident. I would like to know what the others did just prior to the bootloop starting. I don't understand why simply unlocking the BIOS would cause this problem, maybe someone more knowledgeable can add their thoughts on this. Thankfully I was able to recover from it. With my situation, I believe it was a bad set of RAM that caused my situation, but again, maybe someone more knowledgeable has an idea of what went wrong. -

Hello @Mufuggaa, I do have an update and it is good news! I grew tired of waiting for the WSON8 adapter to arrive so I made one. I will spare the details, but it took me two attempts to make one that worked and I managed to successfully program the chip and it fixed the problem. I will post images of the adapter I made, but I cannot recommend using this method as it took half a day and was tedious work. If I hadn't done work like this in the past I wouldn't have tried it. I have done a fair amount of prototyping in the past with circuits and making DIY PCBs. The pic I attached shows the adapter with the ethernet wires I used to connect it to the TL866II plus programmer. I bought the pogo pins on amazon, they arrived in a day. I will post more on this later if you'd like and if you have any questions, just ask. Also, the BIOS chips arrived, but I only got 3 of them. They were easy to program with the socket I bought as well. I will probably keep one of the chips just in case I need it in the future. -

If the BIOS is bad, I will consider getting a WSON8 socket and have someone solder it on for me, it's not worth the risk for me to try and do it. Again, if it was a SOIC chip I wouldn't have a problem. I need to upgrade my soldering equipment for flat packages and practice alot more before attempting it for something like this. -

@razor0601 You're 100% and I do not have the setup for it. I did some practicing on another board, but was not able to remove the hson8 on it without half the chips around it moving around so I am not going to try and attempt this. If it was a SOIC chip I wouldn't have a problem doing it, I have done it several time before successfully, but these WSON chips are a different story. @User I agree that this is the problem. I decided to not try and desolder it. It's too risky and there is a clip that will work. It is specific for these type of chips. They have pogo type pins that retract and I believe it has to be held in place during the programming. I just ordered the one I attached a pic of. @Mufuggaa Will do. This probe I bought will take about 2 weeks to get here unfortunately. @raptorddd Thank you for this. I am going to try the clip method. I have done this with a SOIC8 and did not have a problem, but this is a WSON8. What type chip did you have? To everyone, I appreciate the encouragement to keep going with this and I will see it through, but if anyone knows of a place that sells this motherboard, I would like to also buy a motherboard. Thank you!! -

I received the BIOS chip adapter, but I don't want to rush into this and have been practicing my soldering on an old damaged motherboard I have. I have some skills with an iron, but I do not have much experience with hot air soldering. -

@srs2236Thank you, I do have backups of the BIOS. I ordered an 8-WSON adapter to program the chip externally and I have just been waiting. It looks like it should be here tomorrow. Your post helps me feel better about this situation. I plan to see it this through and will post updates. This is the fourth Clevo I have own, and never had an issue like this. They are usually tough machines. -

Well, the laptop is down. Not sure what the problem is exactly. with the way the power supply was behaving prior to this, it is possibly the problem, but that wouldn't explain why it won't run on the battery. Here's the link to the thread explaining the problem. Basically it won't post, and restarts after about 30 seconds. The keyboard back light works, the fans work and I have keyboard control of the fans, but nothing comes on the screen at all and there is no output signal from the display port. The problem started while trying to run the Redline RAM again. -

Hey Meaker, I appreciate seeing you here, thank you. I tried a G.Skill DDR4 3000MHz RAM stick as well as a Kingston DDR4 2400MHZ, both were 16GB modules. There was no change. I connected the laptop to an external monitor, but there was no output signal. I used a new Celeron CPU and looked closely at the pins to make sure they were all straight and they were, but there was still no change. I am still waiting on the adapter (7.4x5.0mm Female to 5.5x2.5mm male) for the new 330W power supply, I couldn't find one that was near me. I have also tried using a USB boot drive. I have also tested the NVME SSD in another system and it is fine. -

This is good info, I appreciate, thank you. No signal displays from the HDMI, I ordered a minidisplay port to HDMI cable, it should be here tomorrow. I also ordered a larger power supply that should arrive soon. I let it loop over ten times, on the charger with no change. It does not loop on battery. -

Laptop model: Clevo N960Kx (N960KR) This model has a RTX3070 on the motherboard, LGA 1200 CPU socket, two NVME SSD slots, a 2.5" SATA drive bay, and two RAM sockets. - - - - - - I tried holding fn+d, probably ten times now just in case I didn't do it fast enough or at the right time. I tried hitting it repeatedly, I tried starting it while holding fn+d as well. I have been doing google searches for days now. I am just trying to make sure I didn't miss something before I start the disassembly and soldering process with the BIOS. I'm adding a link to a video of what the PC does when I hit the power button. It first shuts off immediately, then turns back on and does the routine mentioned already. Also, I ordered the BIOS chip part # MX25L25673GZ4I-08G, I ordered three. I also had to order an adapter since I haven't had the need to program a wson8 before. So those parts will get here in about 10 days or so. Before I mess with soldering a new BIOS, I will do some testing with a multimeter to try and confirm it's the problem. - - - - - -
