Unfortunately no dice on the AW 18.

Still the same problem. All drivers are up to date.

I tried a full bios reset and nvram reset (uplugging coin & 30s power button push).

as you can see on GPUz board draw goes from 80W to 40W all along...

IDK why and I've already lost two full afternoon working on that thing.

I reinstalled the 1060 that was inside and it works perfectly fine.

The RTX was tested in a MSI GT60 Haswell and also works perfectly fine.

    Sans titre.jpg

Put the GPUz on max values so we can see where its going, I can see where the memory clock keeps dropping out in fact all the power draws keep dropping.

My m18x r2 has RTX 4000 running fine and m17x r4 has the RTX 3000 running fine. What vBIOS in the RTX 3000

    Holy crap!

I think I figured it out...

Tested the card on an MSI GT60 haswell without battery and exactely same sh*t happened.

Then I remembered something: MSI GT60 haswell uses some kind of Hybrid power with a battery connected (as the PSU was "only" 180w on that model)...

I tested with a battery connected and BINGO! VRAM of the card does not throttle at all.

So maybe there's a goddamn driver / programme on the alienware 18 that does the same kind of sh*t.

@ssj92, any hindsight as you have the same laptop?

Do you usually run without the battery?

I'm always suspicious of an online eCommerce shop that has "really good" prices, is full of grammatical errors and misspellings, and doesn't list a physical address anywhere...

Anyway, you'll want to check if this card supports LVDS output.  It is new enough that it probably doesn't, and thus won't work in the Precision M6700 (unless you have an eDP display, a rarity).  M6700 doesn't support graphics switching with AMD GPUs, so you can't just rely on Optimus and run the internal display off of the Intel GPU as you could if you have a newer NVIDIA GPU installed.

Thanks for the clarification. Also on flashing Turing found this https://github.com/notfromstatefarm/nvflashk

I was able to flash RTX 4000 maxQ

The HP model requires some modes but nothing too difficult. I got an extra heatsink to mod, so now I have a ready made for my M18xR2. I might install two rtx 3000 just for the fun of it!

I didn't take any pics but the m18xr2 primary GPU heatsink I used a belt sander clamped upside down w/240 grit sand paper and took off like a 1/16" from the fins then had to clean out every grain of metal between the fins. And it dropped right in. I packed some stiff foam around the gap between the fan and the fins and its running cool and smooth

Hello, I'm new here and I've been using Alienware M18xR2 for a long time. I was one of the first to upgrade to 980m. Now I see new super different cards. I want to switch to an RTX series card. Which cards have been tried? Does the HP series Quadro RTX 3000-5000 series work? I also saw the new RTX 3060 - 3080mxm. Has anyone tried it? Which card do you think would be better for me to switch to?

The RTX 3000 will drop right in, being the easyist "Not the HP Z Book model". The RTX 5000/4000 will work but heatsink modification is necessary w/HP Z Book model.

I had problems with the drivers to be able to run the RTX on the RTX 3000, the P3000 worked without problems

Did you modify the .inf with both cards on it? A separate line for each card and maybe the section part trying different section #ers. Right now I am waiting to reflash my RTX 4000 max Q cause I lost the original vBios and no other vBios is working so it is dead until I find vbios 90.04.2A.00.0C. Techpowerup does not have it but I tried all they have listed and I had to reflash with neoprogrammer just to get the m18x r2 to even see the card. Now I have 2 P4000s sitting in a box.

I only had it to fill the slot xD, in the end I removed it, since it gave me problems with the RTX

Hey TruenoG7 what kind of problems? I was planning to run a RTX 3000 or RTX 4000 in the 1st and put a P4000 on the 2nd, Only because on my Clevo p879dm3-g I discovered I can run a program Topaz Video AI on the 2nd GTX 1080 not in SLI and still use the 1st GPU to do other things, cause the clevo is in PEG mode. I was also able to run Topaz on the m18xr2 in SG mode and still brows the web Topaz Video AI uses alot of power and can max out the card it is using

  9. OK I just got a new RTX 3000 from the Orient and stuck it in mt m17x r4 120hz 3D screen and got 8 beeps. I made sure it was in PEG mode. Did DDU shutdown and swapped out my Precious 4gb GTX 680m and then thought maybe I broke the card cause it is a thicker die and sat higher in the chassis, just a little where the back panel cover was sticking out. So swapped back the GTX 680m and put the RTX 3000 in my regular m17x r4 1600x900 easy to read screen and works perfectly. Am now getting ready to stress out 3DMark with benchmarks. Just wanted to give jerryzago a heads up on what he might be in for with the 120hz 3D screen

rather then being scared I opt to use it and see what it can do! care to share a link or two as to why your scared? I wouldn't mind checking AI out in the real world to see what its capable of.

Well that link on Artificial Intelligence Crafting Custom Malware is scary. That it can morph itself and avoid signature-based detection is pretty wild. Its an all new type of malware. Since AI can code maybe we can use it to write custom BIOS for custom PCs. I am looking forward to using it too.  AI made it into the courts so some regulations will be scrutinized by a Judge

I am about to assemble my brothers build. I'm just waiting on the RX 6600 to arrive. (People are sleeping on these, you can get them used for under 150 USD which is quite a steal for a decent 1080p gaming card.)

My brother sadly made the switch to Win11 (unwillingly, he delayed the update but he said one day his laptop just started updating to 11 without his choice...) and would prefer to stay on it. It seems to be a minefield with these custom Win11 ISOs in terms of how safe and effective they actually are. I am looking for a custom installation that keeps most of the functionality of the GUI intact, but strips out a lot of the useless background crap and has been proven to not be safe. Would any of you guys know a specific ISO that would fulfill my needs?

Hey @tenoroon I have tried this and it did work to stop Blindows from upgrading to the next build

    TargetReleaseVersionInfo
Step 1. On Win10 Pro, Education or Enterprise, version 1803 or later, right-click the Start button and choose Windows PowerShell (Admin)

Step 2. Copy this line into the PowerShell window and press enter:

    reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /f /v TargetReleaseVersion /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Step 3. Copy this line into the PowerShell window and press enter:

    reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /f /v TargetReleaseVersionInfo /t REG_SZ /d 1909

In place of “1809” you can put any of the recent Win10 version numbers – 1809, 1903, 1909, or 2004

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Just do a littlt research on the build #'s as to what you want to stay on

Also in gpedit.msc, under windows components\windows update\windows update for business Manage Preview Builds can be set to the build you want

The key word is "properly". How often are weapons used properly? More of a rhetorical/reflection question really, don't want to go off-topic too much because to me at least, "proper use of force (weapon)" is very subjective and situational.
But then take AI and we might (probably will at some point) even loose the decision-making in the first place; what seems like "proper" to us will very unlikely seem proper to AI.

Let not limit "Properly" to weapons! Weapons are a tool like AI is a tool! And AI is going to be an Essential, Life Saving, Life Changing Tool. All this panacea about extinction is from those who are afraid to improvise and adapt. On this forum especially "improvise and adapt" is a key element!

    Here we go!

ChatGPT creator OpenAI was hit with its first defamation lawsuit over its chatbot's hallucinations.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-06-10/global-leaders-warn-of-ai-regulation-and-ai-finds-itself-in-court

And this: The cybersecurity team at CyberArk, which used ChatGPT’s API to create polymorphic malware, provided perhaps the scariest example. This type of malware alters its behavior on each victim to avoid signature-based detection.

See, there it is: an immediate human urge to weaponize AI.

As much as pretty much everyone hates lobbyists, their replacement by AI would be terrible news for two reasons:

    1. AI would have advanced to such level that almost everyone else would be replaced or worse

    2. Tbeybwpuld likely get more efficient at lobbying!

Another and more important reason to keep lobbyists is to keep our taxes down because they give untold amounts of money to our corrupt government

And what is wrong with weaponizing? I Love weapons. They are extremely and essentially useful. Properly used they are life saving and can keep Humanity  from going extinct!

  15. 23 minutes ago, Etern4l said:

? Don't see why not as long as the links are reasonably legit. Executive summary: can generate almost anything. Will be interesting to see if contemporary completely original human-made visual art survives. I don't think so, which is a shame of course. Even before 2023 artists typically weren't too well off, now it's probably over for many.

They might well enjoy that, although not as much as those fat checks from lobbyists.

That last bit about lobbyists can make me go off topic but it would be great if AI could take their jobs!

The higher ups or more specifically the governments will partially regulate AI and let the rest run amok. They like watching the common rabble scramble

Of course. Automated factories=no workers, automated cash registers=no cashiers, automated call centers=no human advisors, self-driving cars=no human drivers, Sam Altman is saying OpenAI's job is to automate the job of an AI programmer, Zuckerberg is now talking about people talking to AI avatars rather than to other people, Hinton is talking about the benefits of talking to an AI doctor who has seen millions of patients instead of thousands etc.

I think you are just being passive. It's like if Roosevelt said in 1941:  "OK - they came out of nowhere, bombed the hell out of Pearl Harbor, and they have a huge Pacific fleet while ours has been decimated. Message received loud and clear, we will just start peace talks and hope they leave us alone as nothing can be done. It is what it is. Hey, how about we invest in their companies so we can actually make some money off this."

In contrast, 60% of Americans recognize the dangers of AI, the EU regulators are up in arms, China is actually leading the regulation. We can do something about this, rather than leave it to Zuck, Altman, Hassabis, Satya Nadella, Elon Musk etc. But it will take serious effort and sacrifices.

Edit: Some good ones from Twitter:

LLMs can detect they are interacting with less sophisticated users, and give worse (less correct answers in that case).

Anthropic found LLM base models give you worse answers if you use a prompt  that implies you’re unskilled and unable to tell if the answer is right.

    FyJPpTTXoAUhlSg?format=jpg&name=small

To somehow end on a humorous note:

“How could AGI outmaneuver humanity's corporations?”

Not Passive; Enthusiastic, I want to see what it can do. When it comes in a laptop I will then buy a new laptop. I hope it makes it into some games. As for the bombing of Pearl Harbor, they knew it was coming, we had radar on the island and it was reported and the higher ups said it was a flock of birds! Why they didn't send up a patrol plane for a joy ride is TREASON to me. And again "It's All About The Money". Nobody would complain about a few extra bucks but if you have too much there raises the chance of being robbed.

You forgot the parts where it took over 300 years from the time the printing press was invented until the invention of the steam engine,  and 1800 years before Guttenberg that Demosthenes noticed:

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true.

Well, I'm the opposite - what I wish to be false, I believe to be true. The pace of change is rapidly accelerating, all those past accomplishments of mankind had one thing in common - humans were always in charge of the technology. Humans were flying the aircraft, operating the still mills, and are now still running the aircraft carriers. This whole AI revolution has one goal in mind - get the humans out of the equation in the name of profit, power, and short-sighted thrill of the intellectual challenge.

Get the humans out of the equation? And  in the name of profit and power, well that has always been, Greed is like a sponge or vacuum, it sucks. This has nothing to do with my wishes, its just what we got.

  19. it took 40 years after learning how to fly to drop the bomb and learn how powerful that tech was. the sacrifices were enormous but after learning we put it under control(sic)
Henry Ford invented the assembly line and jobs were lost but new ones were created. Today the most powerful weapon is the aircraft carrier. How long did it take to put a motor on a boat? Now AI is new and unknowns are ahead. These unknowns may look like a plague to Mankind. But if we don't keep going we will end up back in the caves. Progress, Proceed, Move Forward is essential to our Civilization. The road will get rough. I learned or was taught "You're in a bad situation, just make the best of it". I believe Mankind will figure out a way to "Rein in this Bronco". When we tested the "Bomb" it was called "The Power of God". Now AI looks like the "Mind of God". We will build a sail and catch this wind.
