After more detail so can upgrade laptop which has one broken graphics card 😞
Alienware M18x R2
- Processor: i7-4940MX CPU @ 3.10GHz, 3200 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
- Mem: 32gb
-
Graphics:
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M (broken)
See mattyb3's comment lower down, but now would like a bit more detail to can pass on to PC hardware guru who has taken laptop apart before and renewed the thermal greese and the heat to dramactically drop. Sounds like 1070 or 1080 would give great performance and 1060 not much.
Questions
- would replacing both graphic cards with 1060 require any addition things (fans, power)
- as above but for 1070
- as above but for 1080
- can i have old 880m card and say 10?0 in non-sli mode?
- any links to what is needed, ideally uk sites!

The 1060 and 1070 are very similar upgrades, you just need to try and get the standard MXM 3.0b form factor. Some cards have a different shape and are hard or impossible to physically fit into the laptop.
There aren't too many 1080's that will fit. The Zotac and Aetina versions are the only ones that fit and have the GPU die in the right place for the heatsink. They also require more power than the MXM slot can provide to get the full performance.
The 1060 is only slightly more powerful than the 980M while the 1070 is a good jump up. It all depends what you can find for a decent price.
The problem with the 980M is that most of them come out of China and they are 'clone' cards. Basically made in peoples garages so the quality is poor and they don't tend to last long.
A single 1060 is far better than dual 880M's as SLI support has pretty much ended with most games these days.
No, you can't SLI 1060's in the 18. You will need to flash the unlocked BIOS to run the 1060 as it has to be in SG mode (Switchable Graphics / Optimus) to run the card. SG mode means SLI isn't possible. Also, most 1060's don't tend to have SLI connectors on the PCB.
Hey Vqmp, Hows your upgrade going? I was looking at a P5000, ssj92 says he is waiting for a Quadro A4000 but that might be hard to come by, and the P4000 went in my m18xr2 without a hiccup and also my m17xr4. They are running great, I just have a problem leaving well enough alone

Aetina cards are notoriously troublesome. Use DDU to remove any NVidia drivers. Does the card cause any bluescreens without a driver installed?
If it's a GeForce card then you shouldn't have any need to edit a Quadro driver.
With the driver removed, check GPU-Z for the vBIOS version and we'll see if there's a more suitable one.
OK started up the m17xr4 this morning from overnight shut down and the BSOD came back. Don't understand why it worked last night, even got this score on Firestrike
https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/73753021. It was running for about 4 or 5 hours before I shut it down, I needed to get some sleep, just want to keep an eye on it till its stable. How about the vBios option, I'd like to experiment with different ones. I also went to Aetina and got the 436.02-notebook-win10-64bit_Aetina drivers for 1000 series from them, seems like a regular Nvidia installer I was hoping they did some in house hacking to, but same, I get a BSOD or code 43 windows stops it from running and the
Microsoft Basic Display Adapter gives a code 31 can't load the driver. I also increased the timeout (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
\GraphicsDrivers\TdrDelay to 8. I hope there are other vBios I can tryEDIT EDIT EDIT
OK Hate to be a pest but I took out the 1080 and put back the P4000 in m17xr4, was hoping to put the P4000 in the M6700 cause it has a GTX 980. But since it is so easy to change cards in the m17xr4 I don't mind if a solution or suggestion comes in, Thanks for the patience.

Thanks Maxware79, you are a reliable source and great help, So the GTX 1080 mxm from aetina did not run in the m18xr2, tried about 4 different drivers and every option on each Express install to custom and all installed perfectly until reboot and then bluescreen. So I went back in and reinstalled the P4000 and it is running top notch. Took the 1080 and installed it in the m17xr4, first shot running perfectly. Very happy with that 17x. As to why the 18xr2 is not taking the 1080 will have to wait, I pulled the LED Logo Board Cable and it ripped like a piece of paper (see photo)
I don't use that light anyway, disabled it years ago because it botherd me when playing games in the dark. Now I am going through Drivers for the m17xr4, I'll start with the latest and see how it does in 3DMark, I am now a happy camper!!!
The vBios in the 1080 is 84.04.39.00.00, Here is the validation page https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/details/g5rx2
I can over clock but can't set power and temp
OH Yea I had to take out the 2nd Drive to fit the 1080, now I'll have to get a dvd caddy to put in a HDD for extra storage
The 1080 is longer and reaches in to the 2nd drives bay. This stuff really makes me shake my head LOL

I need help, I'm put a Aetina GTX 1080 in my m18xr2 and am getting bluescreens on restart. Tried different drivers, 512.15notebook, 472.12notebook, don't know if it needs quadro drivers but editing the quadro drivers didn't seem correct. Maybe the vbios needs to be changed OR maybe I got a bad card.
The drivers install ok but after restart I get code 43 with 497.29 notebook driver. Nvidia control panel not working. I put SG mode in bios is there any other bios settings that need to be changed like muxless settings?

I'd like to see the benchmark on this https://docs.olcf.ornl.gov/systems/crusher_quick_start_guide.html

saw this on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/253284253813?epid=13019948470&hash=item3af8eb0075:g:6McAAOSwdjdaHlfw Dont think this will fit on the r2, Just wondering if the fins can dissipate enough to cool the extra mass. The heat still has to go through the same area on the fins. But if you got 10 C drop with thermal glue I will go with this for the price. My m17xr4 peaked to 105c according to gpuz during firestrike so I disabled the extreme OC but it still touching 100c, dont know why it didnt shut down. Gonna try another paste when I get my gtx 1080 in a day or so,
I see some discrepancies between speccy and gpuz about 8c on the cpu and 0.8c on the gpu

I havent yet tested this since i have my laptop running 24/7 most of the time. However @ssj92 mentioned that the battery takes a few days to completely drain from full, at least with his adapter. But since the battery is removable i dont really see it being too much of an issue either way
I leave mine running 24/7 too but sometimes I shut it down but it is plugged in all the time, so if it is shut down and plugged in will it be warm and no fans running, I guess it wouldn't drain the battery being plugged in, but it just bothers me, like if I go somewhere I would be thinking its heating up, maybe I should get one and experiment!!!

I was going to add this to my existing upgrade project thread but figured to separate it to make it easier to find for those looking to purchase one.
So ive finally joined the nvme club and upgraded my m18x r2. I got my adapter from alibaba and was cautious at first since the picture shown was of an older revision, luckily though it turned out to be the latest one:
Heres the link to purchase one: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/The-Adapter-New-original-MXM-to_1600069323445.html#
While i was at it i decided to upgrade the blu ray drive to a ssd since it was starting to act up. I also swapped my single pipe cpu heatsink for a dual pipe to better cool my semi OCed 3740qm.
Not sure if coincidence or not, but i love how it fits inside of the cutout of where the original GPU heatsink used to sit. Makes for swapping it out a lot easier, the screw for the nvme drive isnt magnetic tho so be wary of that when swapping SSDs.
As for speeds, im happy to report this adapter achieves close to full speeds like with @Maxware79 and @ssj92 Adapters. Thank you also maxware and ssj for helping me decide which NVMe drive to go with, ultimately i settled on the samsung 970 evo plus 2tb.
Also, the NVMe drive is bootable and im happily booting windows 10 off of it.
Thats great that its bootable so now it can run main operating system on fastest drive. Does it still draw power when it is shut down? That is the only reason I am not getting it, I would really like to put a NVME in as main drive in my m18xr2

Yes, I remember it. I built part of it, but honestly had totally forgotten about it. That's quite the blast from the past. Eurocom was still a PremaMod partner back then, too.
I got alot of help back then just lurking about, just reading what everyone was working on and going to do it myself, many mishaps but mostly successful, You were out there alot giving real good solutions and eyebrow raising opinions LOL

A little update 🙂
We have tried several MSI vBIOS versions by now. Installing them did solve an issue with GPU frequencies being stuck at 139 MHz but GPU fan still won't kick in. Once it's temperature hits 91°C it starts throttling.
Is there a chance that we are missing something in unlocked A12 BIOS? It has all sorts of tweaks and settings yet we can't see anything fans-related in there. Could it be that we simply can't find them or they are really missing? Since fans are supposed to be controlled by motherboard's multicontroller chip we assumed that we probably messes up with BIOS somehow but reinstalling it didn't help as well.
Have you tried unlocked vBios IDK I guess there aren't any for 10 series

If the system is needed in the mean time I would locate the PWM wire and cut it so that the fan just goes max speed and later modding a physical switch in later for EC control
My experiences are primarily with the Ranger, I wouldnt be confident in giving further advice :(
Hey Reciever I came across this many years ago when my asus g51jx was always running HOT I was able to keep a cup of coffee warm placing it in front of the fan, RwPortableX64V1.6.9
allows you to run the fans full bolt say when gaming but to set it back when done, dont remember if a reboot was necessary to reset it. Google it and there was a pic of what to set and the fans just go full, I would play Morrowind or FO3 and the asus stayed cool. Just thought it might help instead of cutting wires. It's not an install just runs portable Here is the pic I used to use

Does anyone know how to disable "Error Correction Code" (ECC) in nvidia control panel or by regedit or using CUDA sdk or has this been mitigated by nvidia?
The ECC is enabled on my quadro P4000 and I've read it takes 10% off of the performance of the card. My nvidia control panel has no option for workstation in settings and that is where it is supposed to be to enable or disable it

I purchased this Dell Precision M6700 Intel i7-3940XM 3.0GHz 256G 16GB DVDRW Quadro K4000M W10PRO
in Feb 2018, only to get the cpu for my m18xr2, it now has a i7-3840QM, a GTX 970 or GTX 980, I switch for testing and comparrison, a ST9750420AS in secondary and ST9500423AS in the optical drive bay. Where would I fit the fourth? I am looking to install a Quadro P4000 after I get a GTX 1080 for my m17xr4. Not sure how to make the P4000 work in the M6700. I am very happy with the M6700, I like that it can be worked on upgraded and replaceable components, not giving it up as far as I can see

I just cant bring myself to load up Win11. By 2025 when win10 ends M$FT will be well into win12 and maybe by some FAT chance it will maybe be better than 11 but not worse I hope. But I totally skipped over 8 + 8.1 went from win7 to win 10 and have accepted 10 as not bad. I am deffinetly happier with 10 than what I am seeing all these reports of win11

The Alienware m17xr4 which bios is better, A11 unlocked or A15 unlocked? I have A10 installed now but not sure what the difference of the 2 unlocked would provide. I am having no problems and the m17xr4 is running great. But I do have a problem with "If it aint broke dont fix it" I tend to fix it anyway, its fun fixing it after I broke it HA HA HA!

Using the windows settings worked for me.... is there a specific application that user bench uses for the gpu test that you could add to the windows gpi priority settings?
Reinstalling the games that didnt work have solved my other crashing issues.
I got it working by setting Preferred Graphics Processor to "High Performance Nvidia Processor" in 3D Settings, Nvidia Control Panel. That program runs through some tests in temp folder and can't set them in windows or Nvidia Control Panel. Just the main .exe can be set. I like running UserBenchMark because it is alot faster than 3DMark and I can change PC settings more quickly to adjust for performance. But your bringing this issue up helped me to figure it out. I didn't know about windows taking control of the GPU, M$FT fingers getting too Sticky!
-
I am having a similar problem with UserBenchMark.exe from https://www.userbenchmark.com/.
When the gpu test comes up it uses integrated and I have set it in windows and Nvidia control panel. There must be a way to stop windows from taking control over Nvidia
