Precision 7680 & Precision 7780 Owner's Thread

You might have been meaning to cut the CPU speed down by 5%, but you did way more than that.  Setting any limit below 100% will also disable Intel turbo boost, so the max clock speed will decrease from 4+ GHz to the high 2 GHz range.  (Check the speed in Task Manager, Performance tab while you have a load running.  You'll be able to see the change immediately after "applying" the configuration change in Power Settings.)

 

I regularly run my laptops with turbo boost disabled because it is not "necessary" for many workloads and makes them with less heat and noise.  I have a link in my signature about different ways to quickly toggle turbo boost on and off.

I hardly found reviews on the 7680 and 7780. Some reports on high temperatures and short battery times.

 

How satisfied are the owners of 7680 and 7780 here with thermals and battery time?

 

PS: I am only interested in CPU, so I would go with iGPU or the smallest dGPU - in case that makes the difference when it comes to high thermals.

7780 with 13950hx here, I'm fairly content with the laptop.

 

Essentially, every laptop with this kind of (intel) CPU will reach 100c, the thing is how high they can clock while doing it.

 

I had to replace the thermal paste with ptm7950, but I feel comfortable working the whole day with this one, it feels robust, high quality, I wish it had a vapor chamber and a 330w charger though, specially for this kind of price.

I upgraded from my m6700 to a 7780 (13950hx + Ada 4000 RTX) and I love it. I mostly use it for Photoshop and run several modern gaming emulators and it's so fast I always leave it set to "best power efficiency" - it stays at 55C. It does get hotter if you keep it on your lap and block the air vents.

 

I read the ADA 5000 RTX comes with a vapor chamber - has anyone seen it ? Can it be fitted to the 4000 ?

Does anyone have a 7780 with RTX 5000 Ada ? Can you confirm it has a vapor chamber ? Does it run much cooler ? Can a vapor chamber be added to the RTX 4000 Ada ?

I can confirm it does not. I have the 5000, I think I may have posted photos of the heatsink a while back in this thread.

lol if you only care about CPU get a gaming laptop. The thermals are poo and without doing some shady bios hacks like I described in an earlier post you are limited to 80w..The cooler even with PTM7950 can only really handle 90w of prolonged use. So 3.6-3.7ghz…Gaming laptop with a Vapor chamber and Liquid Metal with a 175w limit that it can actually sustain will cream this thing. If you really really want one get an i5, won’t really notice a difference if you are doing long heavy cpu tasks vs an i7 unless you are doing heavy parallel workloads where you want more cores at a lower clock. Also, it doesn’t have fan control…You get 3 profiles that also change your TDP limits at the same time…

Don’t forget to mention, wish it had fan control, unlocked undervolting, TDP limit controls not burnt into EC firmware.

We are limited to business laptops with support contracts for quick inhouse repairs in case of HW problems in the company.

 

I would like 17" with 16:10 display ratio. Leaned towards an XPS 17 but those are not available in Germany any more. XPS 16 is crap with that new keyboard with touchbar - so I hoped that 7680 might be the next best choice...

I guess if you are limited to professional laptops it’s not a terrible choice. I would also give Lenovo a look, they also regularly have crazy sales like 40-60% off and their cooling is more robust and uses PTM7950 out of the box I believe. The P16v Gen 1 looks very decent with the AMD 7940HS, or the previous gen 6 P1 with a 13900h, they are 50% off right now. The Dell 5690 looks pretty good as well, you can also get it with an oled touchscreen. I would just make sure to order it with the 165w charger.

I used Linux (Ubuntu) on Precision 7770 for a while and the only issue that I really had was poor power balance between the CPU and GPU (which I also observed on Windows), and the fingerprint reader wouldn't work consistently.

 

Which Dell Command app are you trying to use from Linux, and why?

I want to install the command app available for download directly from Dell when you select Ubuntu as OS, the goal is to be able to switch between different thermal profiles as I do on Windows

You can get this by installing the package "smbios-utils" from the Ubuntu repos.  These commands (run as root) will allow you to change the thermal profile.

 

smbios-thermal-ctl --set-thermal-mode=balanced

smbios-thermal-ctl --set-thermal-mode=cool-botom

smbios-thermal-ctl --set-thermal-mode=quiet

smbios-thermal-ctl --set-thermal-mode=performance

I gave up on the idea when I realized that the cooling solution cannot handle even the 240w. Why spend another 250$. Save your money and buy a cooling pad instead and a nice mouse.

You are right, but is the only effective way to do it is just to add a heavy and noisy cooling pad?

 

Is there no other way?

 

The second frustrating thing was that I found out that any one of the Precision 7780's USB-C ports (even including those two thunderbolt 4) can only output up to 15W of power, which I originally thought at least have one port to drive my FPGA board.

 

BTW, my mouse is MX Master 3s.

Got updated from rtx2000 ada -> rtx4000ada.. Had to change the cooling and lower base. I found an rtx4000 Ada on ebay for €400, I bought it right away. Yes, it was worth it, time spy results increased for rtx2000 ada 9800 points and rtx4000 ada 14900 points. Also update charger to 330w

Has anyone ever tried to push out the fan blades for easy cleaning?  7780 fan blades are too many and close to each other difficult to reach.  Dry cleaning like brushing or air gun will not work for me due to too much dust that stick on the blades.  I need to use wet flat button bud to clean the blades piece by piece, where both fans will take more than 1 hour to clean.  Just because of this reason i have bought from aftermarket another complete set of heatsink with fans to replace directly for use, and slowly clean the dirty one later.  My place need fan cleaning every 3 months.

 

Most of the fan blades can be taken out for cleaning, some are pretty easy to push out like intel NUC.  For laptop fan, from the outlook i really can't tell whether it is removable type or not.  Trial and error always ends up with either working or broken fan.

That is abnormal, my fingerprint sensor works well in Linux

On Precision 7770, I got the fingerprint reader to work but it would stop working after a while — like, if the system was up for more than 3 or 4 days. Couldn’t figure out a way to “fix” it without a reboot.

If I wanted to go 128gb ram on my 7780, would the only option be this camm module?
