I've got about 12TB of storage for plex. Do you just never delete content you've watched or something?

No, I'm not sure why I would delete the content I've watched.  It took me so many hours ripping blu-rays and such.

with disney plus and netflix I don't know of many movies that are worth downloading aside from what's offered. like they combined have thousands of great movies and with vpn even more. having movies downloaded over streaming doesn't make alot of sense. but hey each to their own

Netflix and Disney plus don't always have 4K HDR with Atmos 7.1.

The bitrate of those services are also a lot lower. Not to mention a lot of movies simply don't exist on either of them. Older films or foreign language films can be hard to find on any streaming service.

The final thing is I can still watch all my films even with no internet connection.

I really like your setup bro. I spent the past 3 months wiring my house for 10G (one of the reasons why I wasn't as active on NBR). Will you ever go TrueNas?

I have been meaning to ask about your signature. What is it in reference to? I suspect you put it there to make others curious, and it obviously worked. 🙂

I could see it if you are an av creator in 4k+ raw that eats up a lot of room. Flac too if you have a huge collection. And ripping blu rays also, some collections are massive esp if you have multi season episodics and primo sound. I ripped some 1k blurays that were full 40,000mbs bitrate w dolby 5.1 and they were huge, used handbrake to reencode for space. 1k at that bitrate is about 15-20gb per hour of video, 4k at the same would be massive.

Ive got 3x4tb wd passports w about 1.5tb free and they all have redundancy w my fav stuff. Another full 2tb wd pp. About 3tb hdd/ssd w games installed, not full though. Totally agree about not relying on streaming for video/audio esp classics and favs I watch over and over. There are really not much movies/tv last decade id bother with though so its not growing, same w music. Only 1-3 huge games per year either.

Ripping 4K blu-rays has been my biggest use of space.  My games folder is also rapidly growing thanks to free games on Epic and the crazy amount of space new games take...

yeah at first I was thinking, this guy is nuts lol...but after seeing what your doing it all makes sense connecting the dots. 4k blurays/games I feel for yah I filled a 5tb hdd in no time with my steam library. 100tb doesn't seem that far off if your into saving.

I am a physician, I don't have perfect memory.  I store movies so my family/friends can watch them.  There are only a few movies I've watched more than once, but that doesn't mean I want to get rid them if I've spent my money on them.  Again it's one of my hobbies, it doesn't have to jive with what you think I should be doing.

i feel ya dude. the reason why i have 9TB of SSDs in my laptop is exactly that: movie and TV show collections! plus yeah, the games folder is slowly growing in size, as well, lately....haha 😛 however, im not the kinda guy who needs to have everything in 4K with dolby surround, etc.

its cool I get it.....I had friends that would store divx movies...

I think netflix and disney are fine but each to their own.....we all have different standards for tech.

also I hope it didn't come across as rude, I have short term memory loss or degenerative thought disorder.and I forget everything. even I don't store movies as a watch or two is good enough for me unless its a really good movie like dumb and dumber or the star wars saga...in that case I would be fine with 10tb too store every movie in existance worth saving. it's all so subjective, your alot smarter than me so you probably get more enjoyment from shows as you understand them on a higher level and get more of the jokes..

brother @Custom90gtWhat HDD (external) would you recommend buying if you need the oomfmm storage. I currently have 1 tb looking at a 5tb HDD

We are right around the corner from black friday pricing (although Best Buy occasionally has great deals on drives).  If you can wait for it, I'd go that route.  Chances are you can pick up a WD 8-12TB drive for pretty reasonable.  I'm pretty stuck on WD (IBM) drives since I've never had good luck with Seagate drives (personally or as a tech).  If you need a smaller portable drive then you can do the 2.5" 4TB thing for pretty cheap.

I dont know if its still offered but Seagate had a 5TB 2.5" drive. Only reason I went back with them a couple of years ago now as I also dont have the greatest history with them. I still use the aforementioned drives on my system at home.

whats ur take on toshiba drives? based on reviews their MG09 line with MAMR tech is supposed to be super fast and comparably quiet. im having my eye on the 18TB model for backup purposes.

we actually use that 5TB 2.5" model as an external drive in this household 🙂 i originally used it myself, then gave it to my lady when i moved on to SSD only. purchased it in Aug-2017, so pretty much exactly 5 years ago and still holding up quite nicely to this day.

The Toshiba drives seem to be between WD and Seagate in terms of reliability according to BlackBlaze, however they haven't any stats on the MG09 drives.  I've only a few experiences with Toshiba drives and never had an issue with them.

yes true, 2.5" speeds are always a bit on the low side. also better check if that model is SMR, dont recall.
