Vqmp
Have two M18's, one fully upgraded. The other one is base original M18 (not r2 or r3). What is the max disk speed I would be able to get if upgraded the mSata and Sata hard disks? Working out whether doing a cheap upgrade of the hard disks as getting 458-567mb sec read and 183-216 write. Thanks
Aaron44126
SATA tops out at 600 MB/s. Modern SATA SSDs will run very close to that speed for both read and write. That is assuming SATA 3. Assuming you are talking about M18x (2011) and not m18 (2023), systems of that era might not support SATA 3 in all slots. IIRC, the chipset only supports two SATA 3 ports so you might see SATA 2 in the optical drive bay or mSATA slot. SATA 2 slots will deliver half of the speed of SATA 3 (300 MB/s max). Maxware79
I believe the 18 has all 3 of it's Sata ports at Sata3 (not sure about the Optical Drive port). I believe the M18x R2 has 2 x Sata3 and 2 x Sata2 with the mSata and one of the main drive slots being the Sata2's. I think it could be the middle slot in the caddy which is Sata2 but I'd have to check. The Optical Drive port would also be Sata2. I'm not sure about the M18x R1 though. It's possible that the two caddy ports are both Sata3 and the drive bay is Sata2. No mSata on the R1.
