Hi !

There is an AW17 with HD8970m without battery and there is a performance problem  , the gpu only runs at 450mhz .

Is it possible that the performance is lowered because there is no battery ?

I used to run my Ranger with no battery and didnt have those issues. May want to open HWINFO and try to get some limit reasons to try and narrow that down.

Ive sold the laptop and the feedback was that its doing this, i have heard today that the DC-DC circuit is often overloading  if there is no battery present,  probably dell bypass this problem with a bios update thats holds back the performance.

I only ran mine up to A14 and later A14+ using 4930mx @ 4.3Ghz and a GTX 1070 @ 120w for about 220w power draw. Was also using 5 drives internally IIRC

Sometimes the adapter warning could throw a fit to so I usually had that disabled. Without some limit reasons though it'll be like taking stabs in the dark

There shouldn't be any issue running purely off the adapter. What wattage is the adapter that you supplied? If it's a 180W or lower then it's possible there isn't enough power being supplied.

Ive learnd  in the past days , that the Alienware 17 was the first series laptop that had primary mosfet problems , and it lasted to all 6-7 th gen cpu 13-15-17 laptops , dell only managed to solve this problem with the 8.gen cpu series. Thats a litle bit dissapointing .

mosfets werent as robust as the M17x R4 and M18x R2 but never read that it had the same problems as the 17 R2 and newer as those issues would cause the CPU to run at 800mhz until at best a reboot flushes the system at worst stayed persistent.

The gpu running at 450mhz instead of 900mhz,its a litle bit fustrating but its as is.

Try using msi afterburner to "overclock" the gpu by 5mhz or something and see if it helps. Sounds like it's stuck in P1 power state instead of P0

Brand new battery and still 450mhz at load.

I thinking  about some power settings,  or the charger . Its giving good display no fragments or artifacts,  no lines on load its just in low power limit,  vbios is stock original.

The worst  os that ive sold the laptop and the buyer have problem with it.

You can run the system diagnostic in the F12 Boot Menu and see what current the adapter is supplying the system. Just to cross off that possibility.

It has been tested with diagnostics and no error came back.

Still need a adapter info and hwinfo.

Like I said I ran my R1 with no battery and had no issues at all, the cause is elsewhere in the system.

He will test it with an another psu,  and will inform me.

I'm assuming that the 210W adapter will be enough power. Can't say that I've ever seen a 210W for these machines. They usually shipped with a 240W from my experience.

So,  another charger and still the cards is staying at 450mhz core , brand new battery, fresh windows amd drivers,  and still no luck,  how the hell can it work at half performance but the games graphics are ok, no fragments or stripes on the screen.

Could it just reporting incorrectly while performing properly?

Maybe .... Gpu usage 100% d3d usage 100% but its showing 450/300 core /memory freq. Enduro dosnt switch properly?

656937_img_2831.jpg

Maybe Enduro is bad:Enduro last supported version is 2019. ill will advise to check this and i will report back.

Verdict! : the 210W power supply is not enough,  with the 240w psu  everything works well, its boosting to 900/1250mhz.

He wisited me at my techinician/laptop guru  friend , we tested with a 240w psu and its instantly boosted .

Well that's good news, glad you got it figured out.

Like I said before, I hadn't seen these with a 210W adapter so I thought it could be that. I wasn't 100% sure that 30W would make that big of a difference but apparently it does.

Its possible that while the system can detect the the 210w adapter it may not be a part of the "approved" adapters for the system. I believe the Ranger shipped with the 180w/240w but that logic kind of breaks down a bit when considering the 330w I personally as well as others have used for the system. Kind of puzzling.

180w/240w/330w are the only ones that will work properly on m17x r3/r4/17 r1

210w are for older systems. Glad you got it figured out. I always use 240/330w only with these systems
