Papusan
Windows 12 discussion thread... Post all your findings about coming Win 12 in this thread. Thanks Rumor that Windows 12 will charge a subscription fee is shot down in flames Tweaktown.com | Software & Apps | Oct 7, 2023 If you've been following news around Microsoft this week, you may well have seen an alarming suggestion that the next version of Windows will be subscription-based - the good news is that this isn't true. It's doubtful Microsoft could get away with demanding a monthly fee for Windows (Image Credit: Microsoft) Let's rewind a bit to where this rumor came from. It originated from German tech site Deskmodder, which discovered some entries in a configuration file in a Windows 11 preview build (from the Canary channel). Those entries mentioned things like subscription status and subscription type, leading to some speculation that this might be the groundwork for some kind of subscription model coming to Windows. Windows 12 as a subscription-based product seems very unlikely to happen, though. As we noted, it's more likely to become an ad-supported product... Aaron44126
Windows 12 "subscription fee" rumor seems to have been shot down. https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/no-of-course-windows-12-wont-require-a-subscription-to-use ...Not to say that Microsoft won't look to take advantage of anything that they think that they can get away with, to make money from users running Windows. Ads, I mean "recommendations"... plus pushing people to Bing for more ad revenue, and pushing people to Edge so that they can monetize the "shopping features" and whatever other crud they are adding there. (Really, it makes sense, no one would go for a subscription fee. They can't even charge people for Windows upgrades like they used to because people just won't buy them, and then how would they start taking advantage of the new monetization features in their latest version of Windows?) 2 Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023 (personal) • Dell Precision 7560 (work) • Full specs in spoiler block below Info posts (Windows) — Turbo boost toggle • The problem with Windows 11 • About Windows 10/11 LTSC Spoiler Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023 (personal) M2 Max 4 efficiency cores 8 performance cores 38-core Apple GPU 96GB LPDDR5-6400 8TB SSD macOS 15 "Sequoia" 16.2" 3456×2234 120 Hz mini-LED ProMotion display Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3 99.6Wh battery 1080p webcam Fingerprint reader Also — iPhone 12 Pro 512GB, Apple Watch Series 8 Dell Precision 7560 (work) Intel Xeon W-11955M ("Tiger Lake") 8×2.6 GHz base, 5.0 GHz turbo, hyperthreading ("Willow Cove") 64GB DDR4-3200 ECC NVIDIA RTX A2000 4GB Storage: 512GB system drive (Micron 2300) 4TB additional storage (Sabrent Rocket Q4) Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 15.6" 3940×2160 IPS display Intel Wi-Fi AX210 (Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.3) 95Wh battery 720p IR webcam Fingerprint reader Previous Dell Precision 7770, 7530, 7510, M4800, M6700 Dell Latitude E6520 Dell Inspiron 1720, 5150 Dell Latitude CPi
ryan
I saw a recent news headline saying they might go ahead and charge a monthly fee. who really knows what they are thinking, it wouldn't be circling around if there wasnt a tiny bit of truth. I personally will ditch windows if they do that and im the average consumer. linux is tempting. haven't heard much else. 😞 2 ZEUS-COMING SOON Omen 16 2021 Zenbook 14 oled Vivobook 15x oled
kojack
I think this story was bogus to begin with anyways. They charge for windows 365, for enterprise, NOT Consumer. Consumers have windows 11/12 etc and MS365 for office/onedrive etc. Sounds like a hater / fanboy of other platforms come up with this one. 2 Workstation - Dell XPS 8940 - desktop creative powerhouse Mobile Workstation - Dell inspiron 5406 2 in 1 - mobile creative beast Wifey's Notebook - Dell inspiron 3169 - Little gem for our businesses
KING19
It wouldnt make sense to charge a subscription fee for an OS that users can upgrade for free anyways. Personally i hope they do it so they can push more users away and learn hard lesson not to add anymore stupid ideas into Windows and go back to the old Microsoft already. Also why even bother to create a Windows 12 when only 20% of users are using Windows 11 after 2 years while over 70% of users are still on Windows 10.. kojack
It will take some time for users to get on windows 11 because alot of systems cannot upgrade. So, when these systems are replaced the 11 share will trend upwards. Dumb I know. but it is what it is. I am enjoying using windows 11. Works great, it's fast and efficient for my usage. When those replace their systems they will jump on Windows 12. I can't imagine that Microsoft will extend support for both Win 10 and 11. But they will do for older Win 10 due the nature of the HW.
