I'm also interested in changing my LCD panel. I'm happy with 1080p, but I want a higher refresh rate. I've found that there are 18.4 LVDS panels that work at 120hz, but maybe the cable doesn't support that frequency, so maybe I should get an eDP adapter to work with 120hz.

 

It's also easier to find 120hz eDP screens than LVDS. I'm sure that weird connector next to the wifi card carries a video signal (I'm not sure if it's from MXM or integrated graphics, or both), but I think the best way would be to make a PCBway or something like that, a board that connects to this slot to use HDMI or eDP. It will probably be necessary to provide additional power, but there are several points on the motherboard that can provide 5v with ~2a.

I know this is old but most aw 18 lcds can oc to 95 to 100 Hz so I'm betting the cable is fine 

 

Btw I know this post is pretty old but j figured I'd chime in since I have an Alienware 18 r1 viking
