Always fun to dream, and I enjoyed the responses in the other thread on NBR.  So what would you like to buy but probably won't (for whatever reason).

I'll start, I'd love to pick up a 12900ks (when they come out), but my 12700k is doing "good enough."

There's always a part of me that wants a superlaptop, you know, one with a Ryzen 9 5900X desktop processor and gobs of memory and storage and a beefy GPU.  But it really doesn't make a lot of sense for me right now, so I probably won't.

I have already refrained from this a couple of years ago. Around 2005 i bought my last machine, that i wanted to buy badly. Since then i only did buy hardware, that i really needed. Saved me a lot of money. My two last desktops and my current laptop - which is the only computer i currently own - are the result. It is already 5 years old and still easily manages everything i throw at it.

I had the pleasure to rent the 997 Turbo right after it came out.  That was a seriously fun weekend and such a capable car--I could easily do 85 in a 25 without knowing it!

Private pilots license.

Id like to fly a small cessna 172 or something similar just for fun. (Not really just fun..Im a closet prepper and having knowledge on how to fly a plane seems a wise investment to me). 

 

But I currently live in Japan (not my first choice being a prepper but hey..) and the language barrier in getting flight instructions seems a little...daunting.

Fun story.  If you ever get to the Bay Area in CA and check out the Hiller Aviation Museum and go on a weekday when there's like 5 people in the place, you will find at least two simulators to play with--both computers with physical controls that work.  The first is a Write Brothers plane flying over the Bay Area, and the second is landing a 747 at SFO.  Both were a hoot.  And another one of my favorites was the replica 'Red Baron' plane you could sit in the cockpit that had working cable controls that you could move and see it move on the plane.  Sitting there it was quite easy to imagine flying in the air during dogfights and how daunting that job really was.

AirPods Max in either Space Gray (to match my MacBook Pro) or Pink (to match my iMac).  I'm just having a hard time bringing myself to spend $550 on a pair of headphones.

Some form of a VR Headset; as much as I'd like to see what VR is like, it isn't going to happen since I have really bad health issues and I need a cane to walk around for the most part outside the house. Autoimmune conditions + arthritis don't make it fun.

 

On another note, maybe another phone with an active custom rom community? I currently daily an Xperia 1 and there really aren't any roms for it from digging around.

 

Realistically, if there's anything within reach I can get right now, it's DIA's entire stock of carbonara pasta; that stuff is really good and quick to cook.

Some sort of video editor that has a bigger feature set than Windows Photos. Been picking a bit of a habit of making YouTube videos and would like to have more flexibility with effects and such.

Not sure what features Windows Photos has, but have you tried some FOSS (Free Open-Source Software) stuff that's out there? Like OpenShot, Flowblade or Natron, to name a few.

OpenShot is supposed to be very user friendly even for beginners, AFAIK.

52 TB of HDDs, plus 4 TB of SSDs, to revamp my storage and backup solutions, allowing full retirement of my existing drives, other than my 1 TB SSD which would upgrade a laptop.

 

But... I could buy a whole new computer that even included a low-end dedicated GPU for that cost.  So... probably either going to do a much more incremental upgrade featuring an additional 6 TB of HDD and 1 TB of SSD, or just be more selective about what needs a fully resilient backup.  Maybe a combination of those.

Limited mobility doesn't necessarily rule out VR; there are a surprising number of games that support VR while seated.  It isn't quite the same as room-scale, but if room-scale was the main discouraging factor... it might still be worth considering.

 

Although in my opinion, VR didn't really live up to the hype.  It is cool to try the first few times... but it did not displace 2D games for me.  Although part of the reason for that was the setup required for room-scale, and that where I first lived when I bought a headset, it wasn't feasible to leave the room-scale set up out all the time, so the setup overhead was much higher than for 2D games.

I'm more concerned about the wrist movements since I do have rather bad arthritis, but I've truly never understand why VR is such a huge thing, but I haven't tried it so I can't say.
