Rtx 5000 upgrade AW18 R1

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I'm super excited to say I have finally scooped up an rtx 5000 mxm on ebay. I'm a little concerned about the installation. I read that somebody had installed one and had to modify the heat sink and do some cutting to get the thing installed. Hopefully it all goes smoothly I will post an installation update when I get my card in the mail(:

You absolutely must modify the heatsink. If it is the HP RTX 5000 I would not use a stock heatsink. The ram chips will not line up. 2 of them will be hanging out uncooled. My suggestion- Use the one that came with the card and modify that to fit. I bought multiple from HP directly for this purpose. The 5000 is a hot running card. You're also gonna have issues with power spikes. You will have intermittent fps and a lot of spikes. Just know what you're getting into.

Also I checked your last post. If your intentions is to do what I did. NVME 8tb should be fine just make sure you run the nvme bios. I have one specific for A15 unlocked ive been running. 8tb is a hot SSD. A few things I want you to be absolutely aware of. Good luck.

Personally I would look into modifying the spring clip rather than chopping up the fin stack to make it all fit but either way the HP version is a real piece of work to physically install.

What??? I never said anything about chopping fin stacks that's a horrendous idea. No I desoldered the hot plate for the HP RTX cards so all the VRMs are cooled correctly as none of our heatsinks properly make contact with those 2 VRMs on the bottom. I don't have a proper photo of it but I didn't do a lot of modifications to make this fit. But it is 100% better to use the one HP made for the card. It creates less issues than trying to rig an alien heatsink lol.

O.K here is what I did. Lucky my wife took some pics as I was doing this as I am not so good at documenting what I do, I get a bit rambunctious to see how it works out. the third pic is the m18xr2 GPU heatsink stock fins. The 1st is after I sanded it down with a belt sander W/240 grit paper. the 2nd is a scratch line of how much I tooki off across the whole length as you can see the even edge across all the fins in the 1st pic. It is now installed with RTX 3000 in m18xr2. The RTX 4000 I flashed another vBios and now I think it is no good. I am waiting for an AMD RX6600 XT from some Fugazy site I don't trust but If I get the card then I will order a RTX 3080 mxm to put cleanly in m18xr2 and the RX6600 XT in the m17xr4 and a possible tryout in the Precision M6700 if not a T2000 might eventually work

So the only problem with the HP RTX 4000 is the offset of the DIE and mounting holes about 1/4" or less. It sets the heatsink back to the rear and the fins hit the chassis of the exhaust outlet of the m18xr2. So that 1/16" of an inch worked out really well with just enough clearance and since it has a thicker DIE put a slight pressure under the light board and keyboard. If I just would have left the vBios alone it would probably still be running

Thank you everybody for reaching out to help me out I really appreciate all of you(: I do happen to have the HP variant of the RTX 5000 out of a Zbook 17 G6. I read through the comments and there is a lot of good input here that's really gonna help me out with this project. I also really liked Falinov idea on modifying and repurpossing a RTX 5000 heatsink to fit the AW18. I do have a quick question for you Falinov. Could you link to the same or to a similar heatsink you use on your AW18? After I purchase the heatsink what modifications did you have to do to the heatsink to get it to fit? Lastly and most importantly I know I already thanked everyone here but I want to thank everyone again for taking the time out to help me out. I've been wanting to do this for a little while now and after having got a decent deal on a card it's looking like it could happen sooner than later(:

I ordered mine direct from HP I ordered 3. Best I can do for ya is provide a picture of which one you need. About it unfortunately. You'll have to widen the slot for the pipes to fit snuggly so you'll need a router and metal end bit and a steady hand. You'll also have to clamp it so the copper insert doesn't fall out when you solder it. Aaaaaannnnd you need solder paste and or low temp solder. 20240213_155503.jpg?ex=65de6886&is=65cbf20240213_155550.jpg?ex=65de6886&is=65cbf

I would recommend using a bench router and securely passing the plate along the fence adjusting the router cutting depth incrementally with each pass. To avoid needing a steady hand, Expecially at my age LOL

Great PICs, I can see the line you cut and the solder filled in nicely. That also looks like it can work in the m18xr2 and m17xr4. Now to find SPS - Heatsink DIS 25W N19E.  Thanks for this Great Post!!!

Hey everyone it's been a long time coming but it seems like the pieces are starting to fall into place. I just got the rtx 5000 in the mail and the new heatsink. I'm still waiting on some soldering equipment to come in but im really excited to get started! So far I've disembled my AW18 and have removed the old gpu and heatsink. But may need some help figuring out what tool would work best to remove the gpu holders on the left and on the right side of the mxm slot. Then lastly may need pics of the tools and metal bits required to shape out the new heatsink so I can then desolder the copper pipes from the old heatsink and fit them snug on to the new one! I know I keep saying it Falinov, Aldarxt, nforce4max and any one viewing this post you guys are awesome and I really appreciate all of you taking the time out to help me out(:

Welp fellas it had been battle and a half, had taken lots of time and pretty good chunk of change in tools and what not but here is the test fit fellas I gotta throw some thermal paste on the gpu and thermal pads on the vrms. But before any of that I'm gonna remove some of that solder of the top of the copper pipe and polish the heatsink and copper pipes. What can I say though I was pretty excited to give the boys a long awaited update on the project. So here we are fellas we did it(: hopefully everything works when I get the alienware 18 back together but I think this is a big fat W for the books boys😃👍

Welp fellas everything has been put back together tried and tested and seems to work well for the most part. Temps are in range idle and over load. I couldn't get a regular nvidia installer to correctly install my gpu drivers. I tried to force compatibility by modifying the inf file but even then the driver installed incorrectly and appeared as being corrupt in device manager. I opted to installing the gpu drivers by installing inf files through device manager. Everything appears to work now, though I do get pretty big frame inconsistencies in games, idk if there's a fix for any of that. Dlss doesn't appear in any I'm game setting either but hopefully these are some little quirks I can fix in time. Here is a pick of the final results(:

Thank you Falinov I removed it, got everything working but your were totally right about the framerate. I'm having trouble pulling steady frames in some titles. I get fps jumps, and if I quit out of the game and lunch it again or another game the frames will sometimes be lower. Restarting the system seems to fix this sometimes but I'm not rly sure what's causing those issues(:

Run 3dmark firestrike and show us the result. I’m assuming you also need to do the resistor mod. I just did it today on my 18 although it didn’t help against adlink RTX 3000 it should help with hp RTX 5000

I am pulling a long shot here.

Perhaps running the 970 in the primary slot and the 5000 in the secondary, would the laptop boot in PEG mode?

Isn't it more beneficial, having a more powerful gpu (than igpu) running monitor, and the heavy duty work been done by the 5000?

Also, looking at the specs of the 5000, it says its a 135watt gpu. Look at the gpuz stats for powerdraw

He may run into an issue with the 970M in primary slot being used for all rendering instead of the RTX 5000. Some games allow you to choose but it would be an interesting test to see if PEG boots with 970M in primary and RTX 5000 in secondary.
