Hi again

So this is the connector from the cable that I need to go to the 40-pin eDP panel.

It looks like the same one going to the motherboard.

Any ideas how I can convert it for the standard 40-pin eDP panel?

-the auction for the cable stated it as P/N 6VCJW,

unless they sold me the wrong cable 🙂

@GREYSTAR@Aaron44126@TheQuentincc is your eDP cable similar?

can you tell me where you got it from?

Thank you

Andreas

Hi guys,

Just to start off I want to say I really appreciate all the messages on this forum, I always wanted a laptop with an mxm slot and my dream has recently come true when I got an m6700 for a very good price with a k3000m. This forum as well as the nbrchive.net has been very useful for my research on it and it is incredible that such knowledge still exists.

Anyways, I've been really happy with the m6700 I got as it has the IPS 10bit color display + delta fans + dual heatsink. A real monster! Some fixes had to be made but all in all it's running perfectly.

I do a bit of gaming but nothing fancy, some e-sports and older story based games (gta 4 + 5 as well as CoD). I overcloked the k3000m to 1ghz and that made a good difference, the games I play are playable at 1080p low settings but performance tends to dip sometimes, I would like the experience to be better.

I'm planning to upgrade the gpu, my budget is around 50 euros and this is where I need some advice :

I found a M2000m for 40 euros locally and I think it is a reasonable price for a ~960m equivalent, especially if I can sell the k3000m OC for around the same price (they sell for around 45 euros 2nd hand in France)

- Will the mxm A card be compatible with the mxm B cooler?

- Since I have an edp display with no Optimus available, if the gpu is "unrecognized" will I get a black display (saw that as an issue for m4700) ?

 - an m3000m is available for 60 euros on AliExpress, is it worth going out and getting it as it is ~970m equivalent?

Also on a side note I can't get the 10bit colors to work, when I select it in the Nvidia panel and hit apply, the screen flashes twice but then the setting gets reversed to 8 bit, I am on drivers 397.

Thanks,

Hellos Andreas,

It looks like they sent you the wrong cable, I have a srgb cable (for the IPS display, basically the cable we have carries the 40 pin edp signal to an interposer board at the bottom of the display bezel, this interposer than converts the 40 pin edp into 50 pin lvds + power cable for the dream color IPS lvds display). The 2 ends of this cable are this horizontal connector that you show in your picture.

The cable we have is in the first Pic (notice the RGB-MB sticker + yellow eDP sticker )  s-l1200.thumb.jpg.e4d08d135f58a9786feab700d4c7a8b0.jpg

The cable you need is this 2nd one (notice the 3D sticker + the yellow eDP sticker also) part number is 6VCJW, so the seller must have messed up6VCJWa.jpeg.302c99f2021f3b5e94cdebdf84ea0723.jpeg

Finally the cable you don't want! This 3rd lvds one (notice the HD+/FHD sticker as well as the white lvds sticker near the motherboard connector)

Good luck!

Eh, normally the "3D" cable is the one that you want, unless you are trying to put the original 10-bit IPS panel in.  The "3D" cable will work with other eDP panels as long as the panel connector is the same.  I used the "3D" cable and was able to hook it up to a 1080p 120Hz eDP display panel in the laptop.  I didn't end up keeping it because it was a glossy panel.

@JadeRover

I believe you can use a MXM-A board in there and it will fit but it has been a long time since I saw someone try that...  Can't remember if it was M6600 or M6700 or M6800.  You are right, though, if the system doesn't like the GPU card then you won't get any display at all.  Well, sometimes in cases like this you can get an external display to work even if the built-in laptop display will not.

GeForce 980M is probably the "easiest" good GPU upgrade to slap in this laptop, but it looks like that is a bit over your budget.

Okay thanks, and do you know of a way to make a non supported/unknown gpu work on the internal display and without optimus? Does it have something to do with the bios or vbios maybe? Seing as for some cards a special bios must be flashed.

I have a ch341a and I have dabbled in bios editing+flashing before so it wouldn't be an issue for me to do it again

I was able to use Quadro M5000M with the internal display without Optimus (note: LVDS display). I think most first-gen Maxwell GPUs would work (Quadro MX000M, or any GeForce 900 series). M2200 is a second-gen Maxwell GPU and I don’t know if they made any VBIOS changes that would mess that up.

Hi @JadeRover

Thank you for your reply and the very comprehensive post about the screen cables.

Indeed they probably messed up. Also, I noticed that my cable was

different than @GREYSTAR ( DC02C002F00 instead of DC02C002D00)

even though it had the correct P/N... Anyway I ordered a new cable and will report back.

@Aaron44126yeah I also got it as "3D" supposedly, but they probably messed up..

Many thanks!

  • 1 month later...

I'm hoping some people will help with some basic instructions for replacing the 6300 wireless card that came with my M6700 and now seems to be failing.

I have a 7260 card that I never tried using. Is it worth trying to put this in? Could Windows 10 find a driver upon booting? Should I try to save a driver to USB first? If so, where/which should I try to find a driver?

I see for sale (on Amazon, for instance) an 802.11AX WiFi 6 AX200HMW 3000Mbps Mini-PCIE Interface WiFi Adapter with Bluetooth 5.0 for Windows 10. Could this or something similar work or have a better chance of working than the 7260?

I'd appreciate any input/advice. As I get older, I find this stuff increasingly difficult and would be grateful for any help.

If Windows doesn't have a driver built-in, running Windows Update once will pull one down. If you can connect the system to the Internet via Ethernet temporarily, it should be easy to get set up with whatever Wi-Fi card that you decide to install.

Note that some newer cards have different antenna connectors. You might need an adapter for those.

I've upgraded the WiFi card on my M6700 to AX210 from China, but I don't get Bluetooth.

Do I need to have the BT PCB installed or is the m6700 always going to use it's original Dell BT?

If you want to use the Wi-Fi card's bluetooth, disconnect the M6700's original built-in Bluetooth. The module is to the right of the keyboard and you can access it just by pulling off the keyboard trim. Just unplug the module from the motherboard, you don't have to remove it.

There is none in mine, the BIOS says the machine has no Bluetooth.

Does the M6700 have a WLAN card whitelist like HP used to have until the 8770W?

There is no whitelist. I have used several different cards in the M6700, including Intel AX200.

The BIOS will not recognize Bluetooth from the Wi-Fi card, it is expecting the Dell module. It should still show up in Device Manager and be usable from Windows, though.

Ok, gotta check it.

I just got my M6700 but I can't get it to dual boot from 2 different SSD's.

Want to boot XP and W10, but no matter which I install, it wrecks the other's boot. Tried removing one drive, installing the OS on the other and vice versa but with both drives I can't boot neither. My 87xxW's both do it without issues.

Weird. I would suggest to disable the opposite SSD in the BIOS while you are installing the OS so each one is fully independent. After both installs are done, you should be able to enable SSDs and just choose which to boot with the F12 boot menu.

HP Quadro RTX (Turing generation) MXM cards do not use the standard layout. To use it in the M6700 will require some modifications to the chassis and heatsink.

A driver mod is needed (INF file). Optimus works if you do it right. I used to do this manually, but I think nowadays NVcleanstall will do it for you.

Perfect, still undecided between a 980m or 5000m...Quadro feels more fitting and from my experience with Quadros in general, they OC great.

Got the BT working in W10 on the AX210, it needed a separate BT driver 🙄
